hey anon, im very sorry for the late reply;; I usually grab art from artists I like and try to deconstruct by tracing over it, then try to draw it again now without the reference underneath it.
That and tryna do different head angles of the same character just to get an overall feel and familiarization of how I want him to look.

i get where you're coming from though I don't mind drawing the occasion 'avatars' so long as the design is well done and something that isn't clearly someone and done drawing like alot of OCs seems to be lately I'm fine with drawing it. Very cute! there's nothing wrong with the board's color, any color can work in any setting if you set it correctly. It only looks off because the values are off, same with your shadows. In a bright day like that on a beach, shadows are going to be extremely strong midday, like picrel. And naturally light changes tones of everything because shadows scatter color. The best thing is to analyze refs and notice how light affects color.

I am so glad you've asked! He is kinda both!
allow me to explain:

It's this inner universe I have where all of these dog boys were born just normal guys, but through mind-break (drugs, lobotomy, torture or otherwise) most are reborn to become dog boys who are truly free to their carnal desires. They are stripped of their higher brain functions and in return they get to become animalistic free-loaders.

The ears are organic, like side effects of their brains being scrambled.
Tho the snout is definitely pasted on, kinda like my way of stripping away their humanity and forcing them to undergo this new lifestyle.

Well I started by just copying panels from my favorite manga, mostly Akira and jjk, then I moved onto irl references, and really put emphasis on the shading in the photos to really capture the lighting. For suits in particular, suits letter really helped me understand them and how to stylize

I used to paint a lot when I had more free time, but I was always frustrated with rendering because I could never decide on when a piece was "finished." That and of course if you're painting anime figures in a "semi-realisitic" style, you also have to keep the face in mind, which will look weird and unnatural if you try to light it in or block it out as if it was a real head, because then it loses the appeal. Pic related is from late 2021. Lately I've just been drawing and creating lineart with minimal to no color and it's been refreshing. I'd love to get back into color sometime but I've been able to learn more about composition, perspective, lineart, and how I draw by ignoring color for a few months.
