Sketchbook server is pretty nice. It's like those old Crimson Dagger sketchbook threads, where each member makes a channel to post their progress. It's even designed to function like a forum, where a new post in a channel bumps it to the top of the list. There's no discussion channels or anything, though there's nothing to stop people just chatting in their respective channels.

Art friends come easy as a /beg/ because you have a larger pool to look up to. But slowly over time you grow and start seeing other artists stagnate. Their work stops looking good or even decent to you and you try to help but some lessons don't take. Eventually you stop being able to communicate with them about art because your mindsets are completely different now.

It sounds snobbish but most artists have nothing to say about what they make, how they plan on growing, or any substantial views on art in general.

There's no way to naturally integrate yourself with others without looking like a tool, and more often than not they get a power trip from denying someone that opportunity through ignoring them or otherwise like it's middle school. I was drawing around 2005 but I wish I was born at the age to use those sites and draw too.

You join one and have a huge janny problem. Like, they will pretend to be your friend then give you off-hand advice when you know for a fact they don't even know what they are talking about. You're going to give advice about dating, life, or art jobs? Then you better at least had one before you talk out of your ass. I have joined many a server and found out that 90% of the users don't know each other, they just interact in a way that seems like it because you are also an outsider, but from their point of view YOU are part of the group and they are the outsiders trying to interact.

Just don't try too hard, interact when you think it's fun for you, otherwise keep it art-related. Maybe comment one people's art/character if you want to prepare the terrain, then make some fanart or ask for an art trade, I don't know.

Long story short, those guys helped me get an art job and we sometimes work on prompts together. Some people will cling to their side of the story no matter what, but I didn't "run away" from cool guys. I'll say something for people that might care at least somewhat or understand what I'm talking about.

2020 was a very stressful year for me and I didn't know what I wanted to do with myself, art in general, and at the time cool guys was a fresh community. I felt overwhelmed, so I put pressure on people without really consulting them properly, and I did that too many times, making them feel agitated in some way for sure. There were also some smaller incidents that left a bad taste too.

I'm the kind of a person that tries multiple times, but sometimes I fail to recognize that those additional tries are not what I'm meant to do, I should move on, try something else, so on. After feeling like I'm not welcome there due to past neurotic behavior, and some arguments along the way, I decided to start something new, something of my own, a fresh start, mostly so that I don't box myself into a place where others would resent me and I would resent them, no point, at the time at least. I'm glad they remained the kind of community where people form closer relationships, that's the most important thing I think.

As for other stuff, it's never been the case where I don't care about people or art, never ever. If it ever seemed that way, it's because I feel overwhelmed by my personal life (which was never properly explained to anyone, it's just something I deal with myself), I try my best in overcoming myself and building good connections, good vibes. Sometimes I fail, that's really it. Sometimes I rant because I'm trying to find answers to my own conundrums, it happens that from time to time you do it without proper elegance and good faith. I try to be less active in the talking department and more on the doing department, as it's the one that will yield actual, lasting results. But I still stumble, and that's fine. No one here is perfect.
