Nothing wrong with critiquing the critique. I support that entirely, and I have no emotional investment in the critique itself (it seemed pretty simple and obvious to me). I take issue with the fact that of the complaints, all of them either took issue with design theory in general or the fact that he gave critique, or just were some vague mumbled bitching about tone. That's some weird hugbox bullshit.
"Your criticism is wrong and here's why" is a different level than "your critique has the wrong tone", "you're just bitter that nobody drew your OC", "this critique has Dunning-Kreuger energy", "stop spewing design theory, this thread is just for fun", "design is subjective, don't criticize people in here because the threads are hard to populate", and "you are a literal who". Those were all the responses, literally, in order. Those aren't critique of critique. They're pathetic kneejerk responses to the concept of criticism or design theory in general.

Your own post is the only valid complaint about that critique. You're the first one that actually addressed any of the content of the post itself. The rest of the responses seemed to take it personally for whatever reason.

Fuck it, here it is. I made a few changes since the last one, changed the pink for crimson, added the chain (that leads to a pocket watch) and also added some hairpins. I posted late into the last thread so im trying again here.
This is Voodah. He is supposed to be a villain of unstoppable force, much like Doomsday to Superman. I haven't thought too deeply into his backstory, just that another bad guy found him and is constantly pumping drugs into him to make him near comatose. They only sober him up enough so that he may do the bad guys bidding like partaking in blood sports. Even then he's only half lucid so that he doesn't break free of his master's will. With that being said, what do you guys think of his design? I feel that particularly his mask can be designed as to be a bit more intimidating but i havent got an idea how to do it. Please let me know what you guys think!

Characters, unlike other works of art, require to file for a copyright for the character individually. Its not something you get by virtue of making a character. And when filing for copyright there's a few hurdles you have to jump through, mainly being

How many "OC"s do you think hit all those marks and the creator has actually filed for copyright?

And also to add, copyright is specifically used for protection of commercial use. There's nothing to really do against you if you aren't selling it other than telling you to take it down.

Copyright laws are completely irrelevant in this case, and at best if they got a really really good lawyer and actually filed for it, they'd win literally nothing except feeling good about themselves.

There could be potential harassment charges I guess, but that's still a pretty large leap and it would be trivial to claim that you just wanted to get off to a girl sucking a dick and didn't give 2 shits about the artist. It'd be a huge legal fuckfest for both sides and at the end of the day you'd pay a minor fine and told to stop it at worst.

this is my boy Enkidu from the comic im developing; im working on a ref sheet of him currently but this specific part is when he was a personal guard for Ashurbinipal II and the Assyrian palace. Enkidu is a Sumerian man who was made immortal by a nephilim who came across his decapitated body in a ditch. the chemical process that his body went through made him addicted to cannibalism, however that type of caloric intake made him considerably stronger and more durable than his other immortalized counterparts. in the modern day a lot has been subsided by alcoholism his situation still kinda sucks. im still working on his modern design

Our tone and timeframe are probably very different but looking to history is a great way to get inspiration. Your outfits look like an early 1900's look with some 80-90's Mugler vibes, look into that.

This anon is right, considering that Enkidu was Gilgamesh's comrade and in some versions his lover. You could easily have Enkidu be cursed with undeath during the 7 famines; (not invulnerable immortality like Gilgamesh's failed trial but vampiric/cannibalistic consumption to stay youthful and strong) after Ishtar the goddess of love became lustful for Gilgamesh and gets cockblocked by the chad Gilgamesh which she then unleashed the Bull of 7 Famines which both Gilgamesh and Enkidu fought; Enkidu falls ill and dies which is here you could wedge in the curse of undeath maybe.


Also you could probably just substitute "Nephilim (Giants/DemiGods/HybridAngels, all Hebrew Mythology)" with "Annunaki (Gods)" or "Ur-Nungal (Servant of the Gods)"; just about the same thing just about but accurate for Sumerian lore.

Sometimes it is just a matter of the design reference being inaccessible. It’s not always a bad thing, but sometimes an artist puts too much of their own “art style” into the design and as a result it is difficult for other artist to replicate because they’re effectively required to copy the OG designer’s style. A good example of this from media would be Sonic. You have to at least vaguely mimic the sonic style while drawing him or it’s going to look uncanny.
The designs that get the most returns are often just the easiest to draw because they feature very clear identifiable traits that can be drawn in almost any style.

So what can we gather?

I want to add that this rules are not always absolute and some can be skipped. Sometimes a poorly drawn character with an incomplete design and an unclear reference can do the trick somehow, such was the case of my blondie when I started posting her here, somehow she got a surprising attention despite I only posted two potato-tier photos of handmade bust sketches without even color.

Why does this happen? I believe it has more to do with making the person have a thought or a feeling about the character/artist, rather than just the work of the character/art itself.
If some anon thinks a character is easy to draw, they will most likely want to draw it.
If some anon thinks the character expresses a strong trope (cute, sharp, alluring, scary), they will most likely want to execute this tropes
If some anon thinks the character could use this and that tweaks, they will most likely want to apply said tweaks
If some anon thinks the artist deserves their OC drawn (whether is out of appreciation or spite towards the anon) they will most like want to draw something to please their feelings towards the anon.

TL;DR: The success rate of a design is also influenced by the persons phsychological process, strongly helped by charcter design basis

Mostly its just the style, big eyes, big heads, soft curves, etc. A cute style makes everything cute.

Strictly design speaking though, modest fluffy clothes and designs. Pastel colors are less striking so they have less 'power' to them which makes it cuter.

I don't have tablet with photoshop rn so I made these in ms paint for my eventual bideo game

A depressed, self-destructive knight commander OC of mine named Outis.
Meant to look very physically imposing in armor but look very haggard w/o her helmet covering her face.

I'd intended to make her very simply designed, with basic shapes to make it easier on me when I drew her while keeping a mostly memorable design but I'm not sure how well I conveyed her story and the intended impression with it.

Not sure how well everyone remembers my bois. So far, the most lore I have is around my Bridge Guardian oc (no name for him yet tho). He is the latest in a line of bridge guardians and is magically bound to his bridge until he has a kid to take his place. He does not seem to care and doesn't think about the world beyond his bridge.
Breaking Wheel Gordon is one of his friends.

Mix the three. Take two. Run the ideas out. Youth mobsters in a fantasy port city, hood gangs on ships, youth gang trying to create a hustle on the docks. Mix them again. Apply them to the world. Build the world around it. Apply the world to their concepts and build them around it.

GRANTED there are plenty of people who fit the whole OC donut steel, but like the OP isn't what the person who created the character imagined them as being, but it's a fucking cool reimagining of the character presented.
