It's easy enough to know exactly how to colour in the images on the left, you just drop a colour in and then draw ontop of it with a shadow, maybe adding a highlight to the hair. But how exactly are you supposed to go from that to the image on the right, are you supposed to just add a bunch of values and blend them all together? Do you even use the blend tool? Should I just start with 2 values and slowly add more? It just seems so different I don't know where to begin with this.

Always wondered that myself but its just seems to come down to experimentation with layers, shading, masking and photoshopping. Though I'm not seeing the process of how all these people get to saki mode with their details, but you get the impression it's easy to reproduce because you're tripping over it all the time.

I liked the end result and tried to follow the '99% hard round brush' and to make smooth gradients purely off erase and playing with opacity. And it just feels so freaking inefficient - soft shading on overlapping shades means each shade needs its own layer and you must gradient/erase them each, and this anon's step 2>3 requires the you to cover the body in middle shade regardless so you can erase out the form, making step 2 useless? The gradients I point out in picrel will also take forever to erase out through a mid shade, dark shade, and value overlay layer when you can just gradient with a texture brush and be done with it. It's still doable with enough time/patience and playing with opacity, but fuck me if anon says that's possible with 99% hard brush ONLY in 20 minutes (disregarding the last step, where anon mentioned texture brush). It's like a super long winded digital way of charcoal painting where you 'erase' out the form, but now do it in 3 layers... Step 3 with hard+soft brush takes 5-10min on 2 layers (fill>value) for me, and 15-20min on 4 layers (fill>overlay value>midshade>darkshade) for the same result if you stick to hard brush+eraser as anon claims.
If I'm off as fuck, feel free to prove me wrong

Dear OP,

When you learn to draw anything representational (stuff that looks like stuff, the opposite of abstract) you learn it all the same way, through the fundamentals of art. To learn how to draw like x you learn to draw, full stop. When you start to study the process of putting a figure or background or whatever with forms that look 3d, you will understand that that style, as with any other styles, are derivative of the fundamentals that every artist learns.

I would suggest starting with one of the many beginner books that have been recommended here and by the beginner artist community in generals. Our artbook thread will have links to copies of those. Skim through the ones you find promising and get practicing. The learning process, as with most hobbies, needs both learning and practical sessions to "embed" the skill you learn.

Following this post, given the history of these threads, will be arguments over your taste, "west v east" and, tutors or even entire fundamentals being called "memes" and "useless" and perhaps even some more advice. Not to claim to know whether these are "right" or "wrong", I would just suggest to give each a try before letting another anon confuse you further.

All the best,
Anon

The first two are very easy to read, the later ones clutter the portrait with details and multi-level shading.

Readability is very important when it comes to appeal.
It makes it so that less effort is required to immerse oneself into an image.
However, while details essentially always hurt the readability of your work and make immersion more difficult, if you manage to immerse yourself in something more detailed, the immersion itself will pay off much more.
