The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

>> No.6061408

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

If you just want to make a long one-shot comics of a couple hundred pages is there any way to actually make money with that? Even if its hypothetically very good? Feels like every industry is geared to make money off never ending series so if success is a second full time job I wouldn't even want it.

I also only read manga so I'm confused why the art quality on even the most popular webtoon series is so low. Is everyone just pumping out the lowest quality stuff to get as much ad revenue as possible?

>If you just want to make a long one-shot comics of a couple hundred pages is there any way to actually make money with that? Even if its hypothetically very good?
Multiple (fairly famous) mangaka do that, though I don't think they've ever commented on any wealth it's brought them. Junji Ito and Kenji Tsuruta are two such examples, but there are of course many more.
If you're talking about outside of the manga industry, that's essentially what western comics publishing is, only they want you to use their characters and you're strictly artistically controlled (and only allowed to do a part of the production, not all of it).
Apart from that, the chances of getting popular enough on your own merit via self-publishing to sustain yourself are slim, though hypothetically if they ARE truly very good that would give you a massive advantage over the hoard of others trying to launch their big epic series. It IS possible, after all if an audience for such things didn't exist there wouldn't be any Junji Itos or Kenji Tsuratas. They're just rarer because there is simply more money in serials and companies go where the money is.

>I also only read manga so I'm confused why the art quality on even the most popular webtoon series is so low. Is everyone just pumping out the lowest quality stuff to get as much ad revenue as possible?
It's just a young medium. Art quality in manga has been and still is widely varied, there's some manga that is popular despite looking like garbage. Art will improve as authors are looking for ways to outdo their peers and forebears.

I think I know a few r34 loli artists that have something similar to that, but is not really a official circle, they just get together and do comics and post in those big hentai collections.

I saw and thought it was pretty fascinating stuff, probably built around the idea but still neat that someone is doing something like that. God know normal artist wound't bother and the only ones would care are latinos loli artists, make sense they lead the genre around here.

Ages ago furry artists would do the same, I think I found a few collections on panda and a few archieve sites of stuff from 2000 to 2002 that were basically shit 2000's hentai but with furries, I think they used to sell on conventions. But knowing how people on the US deal with this sort of stuff I'm not surprised it didn't lasted like it did on japan, since they probably got in to trouble halfway trough with drama with people who had a problem with that and so on. Even the scans got deleted in a few archiving websites because it was "porn". (they had other pornographic stuff in there, but this was actually kinda sexy and not weird comix ranch scat porn" so a lot of people complained.

>I also only read manga so I'm confused why the art quality on even the most popular webtoon series is so low.
This is due to the way Webtoons as an industry has developed. The speed of release rivals that of weekly manga, but webtoon creators are expected to do a similar page length with no assistants AND in color. It's just simply not enough time to make something that looks really good. Just one good color illustration will take most artists a few days to a week to finish. Then you get into the cycle of cramming out work and not having enough time to spend doing studies from observation/learning new techniques and your art will not get technically better. There are exceptions but art-wise webtoon artists are pretty straightforward about cutting as many corners as possible.

>> No.6063529

I took on the writer role in a circle with a few friends but I quietly stepped out after our first release. There was too much ego-stepping-on-ego stuff going on and the weaker artists wouldn't back down when the better artists had better ideas for paneling, comps, etc. The release was quite high quality-wise but it took a lot of tard-wrangling and felt more like a school group project. Western comic artists in particular are not used to working with other artists and I can see why not many Western circles exist now.

What is yours favorite period of manga regarding influences for panelling/character design/art direction and story concepts? Mine is probably mid-80s to late 90s. Even in something not technically excellent like Saint Seiya you can tell the actual art direction itself is unironically top tier (as proven by Shingo Araki and the anime adaptation).

I find most 2010+ art directions and concepts in modern popular manga fairly uninspired or unappealing, and I feel like a lot of them are just copying off old series without thinking of what made them great. There are some exceptions to this like Made In Abyss, which probably has one of my favorite world building in manga, but still.

Honestly I think alot of it is down to it being easier to get into. With manga traditionally you need to find a publisher, editor, etc so someone else has to gamble on printing your work over someone else's. It means only the cream of teh crop get printed, while in alot of webtoons you can publish damn near anything and just let the audience decide what gets popular.

One would think that means that webtoon would probably be more sold on overall quality but with the amount of horrendous dogshit manwha we see slugged around that just isn't the case.

This is something I'm curious about as well. Viz is apparently taking western manga submissions, but their other 'original' series look like 'how to draw manga' dogshit for teenage girls. Silent Manga Audition is supposedly a pathway for international manga talent, but I have no idea if people from abroad have actually found work through that. Even Image is basically just paying to have their logo at this point and they have some crazy rules like you having to front the printing cost, and if the book doesn't sell well enough, you have to pay them even more money.

Then there's a fairly lively indie comics crowdfunding scene on kickstarter and indiegogo, but that crowd seems to be almost entirely comprised of people nostalgic for 90s western comics. There are some manga inspired things on there but it doesn't seem like there's really a community around them?

I dunno if the best option at the moment is just to self publish and try to make money from patreon or from merch?

If you're talking about the Originals then honestly how they look isn't at all the problem (though they look sterile if you ask me). The big issue is that nothing is being done to make anybody want to actually check them out -- where's the promotion? Why release them as graphic novels instead of chapter-by-chapter? No hype or interest can build when nobody knows what any of them are or what their strengths are. All anybody has to off is a blurb, the cover art and the free preview on amazon, and none of the Originals make any effort to actually draw any readers in through those things. Viz already have a somewhat successful distribution method for weekly manga through their main site... so why the fuck aren't they using that to distribute and promote their originals? It's like they want them to fail.

while I agree with everyone else and think you should really focus on making dynamic SFX in your own language, I'll provide some help.

Japanese SFX are made usually done in Katakana. a writing system used for loan words, and in your case onomatopoeia. Japanese onomatopoeia are fundamentally different than ours so direct translation wont work. find SFX lists or dig through your favorite manga. though remember in manga some SFX are used to set tone and less like actual sounds like jojos menacing one, the "DOOM" in one piece, or the "ZAWA"s in kaiji.

I still think it's more useful to learn SFX in your own language. if you speak English I recommend the essential guide to comic book lettering by Nate Piekos. it has a large section on SFX work

I still think they look like shit, but I agree it isn't the only problem. It's like how Netflix is currently releasing JoJo part 6 13 eps at a time 9 months apart. Not sure if that's because of covid related staffing shortages or something, but it just completely killed any hype. I didn't even realise it had been released.

The model I've cooked up in my head, although haven't really seen tested, would be to basically release a one-shot / longer first chapter (45 - 55 pages) for free and then have a patreon for every chapter after that (probably with a cheap reward tier like $1 - $2 per chapter since it's pretty hard to compete with something like jump+ having weekly jump for only 2 bucks. I have no idea if that would work though and you'd still have to deal with piracy if you ever monetize anything I guess.

Alright heres what I've made in CSP today.
Seems my poor 6700 and 1060 couldn't handle rendering such a massive page (I didnt realize I was drawing on like a 20k x 20k canvas so I had to shrink it down a shit ton to post) and crashed on me before I could save the final panel and some editing I did to the others.
But as you can see theres no consistency between "muh style". I like somewhat larger heads then what the 3d models were giving me so for some it was easier to just make larger in post and some were not.
The models are okay. Not the best and their manipulation is kind of iffy and confusing since it's not laid out the best.
I guess if I really wanted to hack my way into the industry and make money I could make cheap coom shit with CSP.

The handful of reported schedules you've seen aren't indicative of all mangaka. The important thing to remember is that they have to deliver a chapter a week, however they manage that varies by author. Some simply draw really fucking fast, others hire a larger team of assistants to spread the work out more, some find shortcuts, others sacrifice sleep. The actual time spent working varies a lot but the workload is basically the same (though it's lighter for monthly authors).

>> No.6070763

Makes sense, I know is a shit ton of work I don’t doubt that, my only concern is that if sacrificing sleep isn’t just a trading more time for less efficiency and if the trade is woth, but I guess gaining 6 extra hours must be worth whatever fall in efficiency they have, if any since I think the ones who barely sleep just take a lot of stimulants, so the trade in is no longer efficiency but long term health

Japanese mangaka are literally the most efficient sequential artists, what are you on about? At the weekly place the output is insane, you have 18 pages per week with fully realized backgrounds and character art. None of it would be possible without assistants. Just look at the credits page for any manga and you will quickly realize how much work the assistants actually take on compared to the mangaka. Horikoshi said it takes him about 2 hours to finish his part of the inkining process in a page, which is just the characters, speech bubbles, and important hatching. His team of assistants do all of the steps afterwards including black fills, screentones, backgrounds, and speedline effects. Fujimoto's Fire Punch looked more polished than Chainsaw man as a whole even though they were both weekly because he had better assistants during Fite Punch's run. Even editors are the ones who usually add in the dialogue as well for mangaka. Manga-making is a well-oiled machine in Japan and the reason why the output page and quality-wise is so much higher than other countries. Webtoons have the output but not the quality (lacking assistants, and trained ones at that) and some Western comics have the quality but never the output (180 pages a year is on the faster side for the West). Other countries often "fail" when trying to create their own manga series/industry because they don't even start with giving their artists assistants as they don't know how collaborative the process of manga-making is.

You could go to Japan and be an assistant for a while given you know enough of the language. Lots of mangaka take the assistant > mangaka path since being an assistant for a great artist can both teach you a lot and give your "priority" when you submit your own story to the company since they already know you. Murata for example was an assistant for Obata's Hikaru no Go and apparently learned a shit ton from Obata while working with him. Then he became the artist for Eyeshield 21. There was some white girl who was studying in Japan and was able to become an assistant on The Prince of Tennis so foreigners becoming assistants isn't totally unheard of.

So, one question I have for you fellow creators is, what do you call your work? or at least what category do you consider it falls under? I ask this because as I continue to work on my own projects, I feel like it either does not/cannot be considered manga( if anything manga inspired) or I dont want it to be called a comic, simply because I dont share the current mindset that the industry seems to favor.

Hell I dont even want it compared to webcomics/webtoons for the same reason I just mentioned above.

Calling it a graphic novel may come across as pompous and arrogant. But its the closest I can think of, in terms of the type of product I'm going for (think Thorgal meets The Incal Series, and a healthy dose of inspiration from names like Brom, Simon Bisley, Mike Franchina, Frazetta, Yoshiaki Kawajiri).

I plan to put up content every other week, so I thought maybe calling it a 'Graphic Serial' would work. I know this may deviate from the thread topic a bit but I'd appreciate some input.

Dialogue in eromanga serves one purpose: enhance the action, either by reinforcing the action ("you're squirting!" when we can visibly see the character squirting) or contextualizing it ("My panties are soaking wet" as the character leans in and blushes). Remember that and write the dialogue with that intent. And analyze it, if the dialogue doesn't enhance or contextualize the action then just remove it, since it's a waste of time for the people who bothered to read it.

Keep in mind Felipe Smith mostly got his serialization because that was the reward for the competition, and wasn't able to land a second. How do I fix this.... I think it's mostly the values and color? Maybe the perspective too but it's not as conspicuous as the colors or values I think. How do you all usually balance values to separate characters from the background and pick color most of the time? The standard of colored webcomics sucks.

Thanks for the reply. I realized it sounds too similar to drakennier (the drakengard and nier franchise) although the original meaning was meant to be a fusion of draken and air... I might still go with it though, that or drakenlier (draken and cavalier). Meanwhile, draconair sounds too much like dragonair the pokemon.

Weird Question, but would you guys agree that coloring your comics is easier than doing it all in black and white, manga style? I find that manga is very sophisticated in its ink-work and value and the more I try to emulate the style in my work the deeper and deeper layers I find in its complexity.

Trying to reach the same emotional impact that color has on the audience with b&w art is so difficult.

In greyscale, you can't make up wonky values with colouring. It's also harder to create low lit atmospheres with inking (even if you use screentones, they're pretty tricky to use right). You have to be very smart to decide when to cut out to black in order to keep scenes easy to understand to the reader.

Huh? The internet is hungry for good storytelling. There's plenty of opportunity to make, you just need to actually create something worth reading. This wouldn't be any different even if we had a publishing industry on the level of manga -- you still need to be able to make something that will interest people and make them want to read more. You just have less reach without them, and aren't getting paid upfront for your work.
And a smaller reach isn't the end of the world. If you make something that interests people and actually put it where they can see it then you'll grow an audience. It probably won't be growing explosively, but if it's good then you will grow. If anything seeing if you can grow an audience online without a publisher is a solid test to see if your work is actually up to snuff to take to a publisher if you wanted to.

Tottori runs a one panel category, though I'm not sure how to interpret it, the winner they noted there for the wind theme just looks like a burning bug repellant I think.
The noise theme looks to be a ghost with crutches wandering the street
There's a 4koma category, which I told you the tanabata girl one winning the wind contest as a whole.
For Noise they noted one about an old mam being made into a hero by an alien, all he can actually do is hear better though.
Then there's the story category
Wind noted one about a bear seeming to quarantine himself in the mountains, this is around the start of covid after all, and the idea that life is propagating in his apartment cuz he left dishes in the sink when he left. This one was nice, it's like, children story book style art
For Noise it was about a girl helping her brother relax by having him listen to the nature around them, since he's all shacked up from covid, going from just stuff like cicadas and birds to a whole orchestra of stuff. I'd say it was the best of them, it's real well drawn, from a Thai contestant.
When I'm saying noted it's the "outstanding performance award", which I assume is the best of the categories. Noise had another story category shown, for the "10th anniversary special award" also was one by a Thai.
Noise didn't have a grand prize winner.
These were the winners they show, but there's 9 winners from wind and 11 from noise. 2 foreigners won awards in wind, a Thai and a Russian, and 3 won in noise, two Thais and a French.
They sell books of the submissions that win and the final selection group, at some point I'll have to try and get them, though I doubt I'm in either one

I realized you asked other years, not other winners, so let me try to be quick and continue
The 8th year was themed windows, won by a Thai, the winning work is about a girl smelling a guy making chicken from the window of a shop, and it makes her think of how her life is going compared to him, doing what he wants while she doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
7th year was miracle, the winner was a one frame, it's called Alumni Miracle Encounter, so based on that and the pic it's old colleagues meeting in the oddest way, one getting thrown out after an affair with a woman, one escaping from robbing a place and one depressed seeming to be about to jump from the building he's on.
6th year is travel themed, but the site doesn't have the judging table or the winners on display for some reason.
5 was themed with heroes and heroines, no one won the grand prize. One of the excellence awards as its called at this point that caught me at least is a 4koma about various folk tales, like Momotaro and Urashima Taro, another one is about a villain wanting to be a magical girl, also a 4koma
4th is themed food, the winner being a 1 frame of a slug daughter bring salty food to her slug mother in law
The first 3 years all don't actually display the work in a readable capacity,
3rd was friendship themed, only thing of note is that a Ukrainian won an award there
2nd year was "the world in the palm of my hand"
Won as a whole by a Ukrainian duo. Two Koreans won awards as well.
1st year doesn't have a theme on the site still, based on the imagery though it was about the sea. A Taiwanese won the contest, and it looks as though the Ukrainian artist from the 2nd year won an award on her own here. A Russian also won an award.

That being said, if you're interested in manga making, twitter is really the place to be. JP artists use it as their primary upload site and often times don't upload their WIPs anywhere else. he got btfo because he embarrassed himself on /a/ when that red riding hood comic came out and got axed. a reasonable response would have been to express some sympathy that a fellow artist's dreams got cut short. but he was unreasonably jealous and envious it was published before his work and acted like hot shit because he was in touch with a shounen jump editor. then when people called him out for his attitude, he would say shit like "i'm going to change my alias anyways so i don't care" and kept shitting on red riding hood.

also he kept getting into fights with the anons here about how stories should be written and wouldn't budge from his position about how it needs to start with "theme" before world building and characters and stuff. a reasonable person would say it really depends on the story and person and just let that shit go and let people do what they want. also i think he had trouble accepting feedback and critique despite asking the anons here about it so he got sick of that too.

he has this recurring pattern where he thinks he is always in the right and has some level of authority despite having not been published or anything yet and not knowing what kind of people he is arguing with since we're all anonymous. his instagram profile saying "one day i'll be famous" kind of sums up his attitude.

desu i don't really miss him, he was kind of an ass. his art was nice for a westerner but wasn't really memorable and i didn't really care for the story.

for the people who are really good at drawing manga-styled art here, like that australian guy whose name i can't remember and who scored a high place in SMA, why do you want to pander to japanese markets and become a mangaka that way?

i read a few webcomics on tapas and webtoons and stuff, but the thing that annoys me the most is how soulless and "western-looking", if you will, the art is. why not just use your artstyle to make basically western manga? you draw in that style but you make a story and world that very obviously isn't japanese nor is it pretending to be, because i've found that whenever i've talked to or tried to read stories about people who copy from other mediums or cultures, it becomes really difficult to read or comprehend that it's written by a person from that culture. i can't really pinpoint this onto any literary works or comics, but for example it's how you have foreigners who don't know japanese culture and see it only through the lens of manga and anime, whereas natives and even foreigners who have lived there for like 10+ years and assimiliated into the culture can truly comprehend and make art about that culture.

and i also know about that one artist who draws like a cowboy something manga that got shouted out by the author of dr. stone on youtube, i also can't remember his name, i really enjoy his work though.

btw i'm just a dumb tourist, i don't draw, so just keep doing what you guys do, it's awesome. even the art that is admittedly sort of crappy, i find a certain joy in those artists who draw whatever the fuck they want onto the paper even if they are technically not skilled enough; it means they have enough bravery and creativity to not cuck themselves out of their own ideas just because they're not skilled enough (yet!)

It's literally what I do, but I keep the R-L style because I want to apply for manga contests too and mixing them up will just confuse me.
But I get you, I don't want to write about japanese culture since I'm not japanese and there's just some things that you can't get across if you're not. Like these forced "authentic" feeling entries that would have been way better if they just stayed with the culture they know.

Lord of the Rings gave maps in every book at the beginning. If you're going to have the characters do a lot of traveling, it's helpful to have a map for readers to refer back to so they can better comprehend the distances and relation to the physical world. Especially since you really have to make the passage of long periods of time for traveling an extreme abstraction.

>why do you want to pander to japanese markets and become a mangaka that way?
Biggest comic industry in the world, most opportunity to do what I love without ending up homeless. I would very much prefer to make stuff for my own culture but you have to make your own opportunities to be financially viable. There are people who managed to do just that, but it takes many years of making and releasing the same project before you've built enough of an audience to make a living with it.
>but webtoons
I don't want to make a scroll comic, and webtoons are not proven to be financially viable in the long term. It's still a medium in its infancy and currently almost monopolized by one company -- not a good sign.

>>6088344
Lord of the Rings is Lord of the Rings. It doesn't have to be proven worth reading because it's already world famous. Some nobody's webcomic is not. You should prioritize telling an interesting story that hooks the readers and gives them a reason to WANT to see your world map. I'd argue there's good reasons to never show a complete map of your setting at all, to keep the world feeling large and mysterious.
>>6088677
Ultimately it depends on what you want to achieve, but yeah not overexplaining your setting should contribute to keeping it a mysterious. This can still be fucked up it other ways though so it's not like not showing the readers a world map is a golden bullet or anything.

Not actively, since I'm tight on time enough as it is. I do, however, try to passively learn by reading manga/eromanga in japanese. I still need a lot of help from OCR and MTL.

I might have given the wrong impression in that post, by the way. I'm not pursuing a career in japanese manga, since I believe the cultural barrier is simply too great for me to reasonably overcome at this point. What I am doing, however, is looking to see if I can get an eromanga published. I believe this is a much more achievable goal, since it limits the language and cultural knowledge requirement significantly. I've tested the waters for this already by sending a storyboard for an eromanga to Mujin, and in response they told me (paraphrasing) that they liked it but that I have to finish it and resubmit it before we can further the discussion. So right now my time is split between commissions and that eromanga project. I've been doodling a bit lately too, just for the sake of drawing something that isn't porn.
Eromanga isn't my end goal, it's just better paying and more fulfilling than random porn commissions. My biggest issue right now is that I HAVE to take any commission I can get or I'll fail to make rent, which is quite stressful and leaves me pretty drained by the time I work on anything else. If I can land this publication with Mujin then I'll only have to put out chapters every few months to stay afloat financially, which gives me breathing room to work on the all-ages projects I've been brewing in the background.

Just read ero LNs or whatever interests you (porn is good for instance in hooking your attention) with yomichan and or a texthooker and look up everything you don't know until you're good. If you get bored, read or watch something else.

No, digital screentones are actually a huge step up from zippotones. They look identical in print while digital is many times faster to apply. Murata telling his assistants to use digital gray washes and airbrush erases doesn't change that.

As far as I know there aren't any resources that will tell "how to panel" because ultimately there are many, many, many "right" ways to do it and highly dependent on the specific sequence you're trying to panel.
