is anyone else planning their portfolio? I'm taking the challenge seriously and I've set a goal of 20 pages completed by the deadline
first three pages are my concepts for tiny indie game (environment, a storyboard for a small boss intro and mobs), another three for a similar personal project, and... that's it for now. I guess a good 3-5 pages will be for figure and environment studies. meanwhile i dont even know exactly what field to aim at, but I guess 2d generalist/concept artist.

Oh well. I guess I'll keep working in this rhythm on my own then, but that's fine.
2 days isn't much time and I was really struggling to get anything decent done. I probably should watch some courses and try my hand at less labor-intense styles (like cell-shading instead of painterly style). The other issue I had was lack of imagination (so jelly of Table!), but I hope I'll naturally train it by keep doing illustrations to random prompts like that. Finally my drawing skills (perspective and figure drawing) were simply weak. Gesture drawings (especially longer ones!) and doing studies from mapCrunch turned out to be quite beneficial and I regret that I stopped doing them.
But I think the most important lesson I learned was that less ambitious, but polished picture is much better than more ambitious piece, that has some parts clearly done in a hurry.

I liked the flow to an extent but ultimately I was producing really inferior work and I don’t like that part. Maybe if I kept going like that for long enough I would get a lot better, but it’s also possible that I would just stagnate… if I didn’t have work during the week and could do more studies then it would be so nice though

There is no skill level or specific content-related requirement, the only rule is that your submission takes 30 or more minutes to make. So your post would qualify for dad I think.
The timer on the website is localized to GMT +0. Submissions have to be made every day before midnight GMT (so rollover was roughly 40 minutes ago). I'm UTC -7 so rollover happens at 5PM my time.

You can have a very creative but irrelevant to the prompt entry. But then what is the point of the prompt if you are not penalized for being off topic and just drawing furry porn for 3 entries

This is how you were scored (rough estimates)

Even so it’s hard, because the guy that just wants to draw furry porn maybe got an idea for his furry porn which is totally ok. But the guy who really wanted to draw his cat, just threw in some beer bottles to a cat collage.

But that is why we have more than 1 judge to determine these things. Because how I feel when I see your drawings may not be how other judges feel.

The issue is that the criteria for judging it is way too subjective.
It’s great that you have a cohesive methodology to judging creativity but it’s still too subjective of a criteria to make sense even with multiple judges.
I remember the same argument last year or the year before… it just needs to be revamped or weighted differently.

There were a lot of proposed changes to the tournament that didin't happen even though a lot people wanted it. I think it's because the dad community is all over. Banana only checks the website so even if the entire dadcord and the threads agree that they want to change something, it doesn't really reach banana or these threads unless there's a mediator, and there kinda is one sometimes. Someone went to the forums and told banana what some people from the dadcord were thinking about the tourney but he never heard the arguments or the full opinions of people so it was just silently decided that he wasn't going to apply the propositions. It's the same on these threads, neither dadcord nor banana will know what the threads think unless there's a mediator but honestly who cares enough to do bananas job? I feel like the entire website went into limbo the moment banana tried separating the website from the community. I personally have a lot of opinions and suggestions for events like the tourney that i would've liked bringing up but i can't be assed to make a thread on the forums or email banana.

It’s a prompt. The prompt didn’t say “draw what you want”. The prompt said “Summertime!” What you do in your summer is your business. Whether or not you think the judges can relate to what summer means to you is your gamble and your risk to take.

Maybe I spend my summer in my secret place behind a mysterious door to a dark cave with god rays or my summer is spent facing left and jumping to my death from a plane with a sword to kill a monster that I regret summoning. But thats too bad because I already drew those things for the first 2 prompts.

I've always felt that prompts should be optional. As in, it's there to help give you something to work with if you're out of ideas for what to draw, but not something you have to actually follow if you have a better idea.

I think this is the direction that future tourneys should be heading toward rather than giving straight zeros just because your idea is a bit too out there.
If anything creativity score should just be a bonus point or two tacked on if someone did something that stood out.
