Vilppu keeps repeating the following:
> Don't copy!
But what does that mean?
How does an artist see a figure?

What he means is to trace. Copying is for retards.

Free your hand and get inside the canvas, feel the depth, man.

Do not draw something with your supposed pre-conceived knowledge of said subject. Draw it as you see it.

I think he means trying to see the masses of the body as spheres and ellipses supported by bones, then rendering shadows to show planes turning away from the light source to create depth.

I’ve been reading about this topic today in a book suggested in this thread

The way the book talks about this it talks about how the medium you should be drawing from should be the imagination’s representation of our observations rather than “copying”. It seems to be stressing that that is the difference between intelligent drawing and mindless drawing. I don’t know much of Vilpu, so I can’t say for certain if it is his interpretation, but this is one interpretation of the meaning. It’s a cool book. You should really check it out if you are curious.

Don't copy, analyze.

>> No.5242517

As in, don't copy the 2d image you see onto the flat surface of your canvas.

You have to realise that what you're looking in front of you is a 3D form with depth and structure. But your canvas is a flat, and your materials are paint, pencils, pixels etc

SO, it's an illusion, you're tricking to eye to believe in something, an idea you're trying to express; THEREFORE analyze the form and structure, so you can better understand it when you're trying to trick the brain.
