IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

Sticky document:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it!

I did some drawabox and had experience in other visual fields like video editing but nothing in the book has prerequisites, in fact you have to unlearn a lot of habits at first because it's easy to get caught up in what you're used to do instead of the more fundamental and direct practices the book asks of you, absolute beginners should have an easier time with it than people already used to drawing cartoon faces.

The only way to improve at least if you're going down any stylized route imo. There's just no reason to "figure out" all the design tricks and tips on your own when there's so much appealing art at your fingertips nowadays.
A process that helped me is to do a figure drawing, then focus on a spot where I think I did poorly and want to improve on (say, a leg), and then see how other artists draw legs and how I can incorporate that into my own work.

don't try to study everything at once, then

a process i like to go through -
come up with an idea for a piece you'd like to make, and then break that down into smaller concepts you can study individually.
say you wanna draw a car. you can study a little bit of construction to figure out the forms you'll be working with, you could go study how to render the different materials you'll find on a car and how they'll reflect light, you can go study car design in general, etc

then once you're comfortable with all those concepts you put it all together and draw the thing you wanted to in the first place and you'll have learned a lot along the way

If you really CANT do it its because you suck. You can trace it but then you must know you'll suck forever and be forever tainted as an artist.

Better know where you want to go, and plan your way up there by identifying the variables that makes the ones at the top successful.

I have a question, do you think skill wise I can get better and wouldn't it be cheating if I had to start over but I had to include those 6 months of failure
Like I feel I should be better and if someone were to ask me how long I've been drawing I have to include them but since I suck, it feels like I'd be drawing for way longer for lessened results, like if someone asks you how long have you been drawing? I worry that I'm inferior because I can't reset time, I can't start over and say oh I've been drawing for a month or so when I have to add those 6 months as honest

>The 50/50 thing from Drawabox?
That's not a bad habit to go in for any creative endeavor. His point there was to stick to the lessons to the letter, while spending at least half of the time you do artistically by drawing what you want and when you want. This not only further helps you get used to drawing, but is meant to teach you focus and discipline and understand the difference between work and play.
It's up to you whether that free 50% includes studying the direction you want to go, and I'd suggest that.
Fundies are important, but it's only a part of it.
Me, I want to do old-fashioned pin-up eroticism, basically softcore Barbarella-tier porn. It's satisfying and makes me happy. I spend half the week learning fundies, spend about 25% studying how pin-up artists do things and another 25% (actually much more) drawing for fun. Just an example.

>> No.5241623

My ONE advice to you: grow some fucking balls, stop being a pussy, and practice. That's it. Don't ask me or anyone else any more questions. Go to fucking drawabox and follow the lessons to the letter if you want handholding. Spend your off time looking at your own mistakes (since you obviously see them) and work to correct them. He doesn't want help. He wants to piss and moan and tell you that your advice isn't good enough. Don't be like this guy even if you're a goddamned billionaire artist and have the right to be a snob. His arrogance and insecurity are the opposite of the mindset you need to do anything creatively. Unlike him, you MUST be open to learn and you MUST be willing to try to fly out of your nest on your own, even if you fall on your ass. Without accepting these two requirements, then and only then should you give up.
I don't know if this guy's a dedicated troll or just a mentally ill retard, but there is absolutely no getting through to him. Thankfully at least he can serve as a lesson to people who actually want to improve their work.

That is the saddest part. When I said you need to lose that mindset, I mean that it's an absolute requirement to not only draw well, but enjoy drawing well.
If you refuse to change your mindset, then you're hurting yourself, since it'll only make you miserable and depressed.
If you literally can't then you really are better off not drawing at all. I hate to say that but that's how it is.

Manga and BD alright.
It requires an extremely large toolkit. Good manga/comic artist are way more rare than good artists.

You need
>Story
Look up John Truby "Anatomy of the Scenario". You'll never watch a movie or read any piece of story the same way. It made me realise every detail has its significance and its own weight, like every line in drawing does. By story I include not only the kind of setting (fantasy, sci-fi...) but also your characters, vilain, etc.... Basically you have to become a writer. Good luck. Of course you can leave all that to someone else and just draw what he asks you to draw.

>Panelling, Rythm
Rythm is somewhat related to the Story, but it's in the panneling that it bring it to life. Even if you have the best drawing in the medium and the best story, if you have no rythm the average reader (your #1 Target and the one person you should always aim to please) wont give a shit.

>Art
Arguably the least important aspect. There are plenty of artist on /ic/ that are better at drawing than plently of famous bd-artist/mangaka.
But you need style.
A Style is a recognizable lineart that you can produce steadily, all while being (at least it should be) anatomically correct. These are your fundies. They say it takes about 10 years for an average artist to get a style that can allow him to work as a comic-artist/mangaka. This is why knowing your endgoal and your vision is important, so you go in the right direction because honestly we cant afford to lose time lol.

IMO this is by far the hardest path one can take, few can do it, especially if you want to do manga then you'll need raw fucking talent and confidence.

Whats really great about it is if you have what it takes you WILL get recognized. No matter what times something like Naruto, HxH, Death Note, Chainsawman, Slam Dunk, Vagabond, Fullmetal Alchemist would get published, no matter the meta it will be a success. This is why its so beautiful and worth pursuing.

Btw, worst case scenario you can always be a metaslave and do a manga about highschool and superheroes, but even then the story and panneling will be more important than the drawing itself.

Loomis is legit, especially when it comes to construction, and you can tell just by googling his actual art. He'll use cartoons in his first book just because cartoons are simple and his plan was to teach most age groups. He's spammed here for a reason, no point in disliking him because of a high opinion.
As for figure drawing, my plan after drilling in enough fundamentals to know better is to take Brent Eviston's courses (including his own take on fundies because why the hell not).
There's a mega chockfull of lesson plans in the video thread. It'd be a good place to look around.

that's how it goes for most improvement in life, you don't really feel it. I suspect the lack of immediate visible gains after reading books or watching videos is what makes most people give up. At least in sports, you can make zero gains and hurt yourself but that's a result, at least.

Pick a book you like, pick a scene, illustrate it.
Pick a book you like, draw a cover for it.
Pick an album you like, draw a cover for it.
Pick a song you like, illustrate it.
Pick a poem you like, illustrate it.
Think of an expression, like "Don't cry over spilt milk", and illustrate it.
Think of an emotion, illustrate it.
Think of an action. Illustrate it.

These are all assignments from the illustration classes I took in college.

It's fine overall, but you need to define the volume/depth of the lizard, the head is lost because it's the same values as the rest of the figure. The values are all over the map - you did fine with them on the back legs and tail, but the wheels fall off at the head.

You're on the way. The next step is to be able to draw just the contours, without the construction lines. You have a good feel for the form and volumes. Start think more in terms of flowing s-curves to define the contour, not broken lines. Start focusing on line weights, to make pleasing forms.

Onwards!

Yes. No shame in starting over. You're obviously struggling with blending and shading, and anatomy. And, stop thinking of flesh as "beige and black". Use dark hues for shadows - you're working from a photo, so it will be harder to see the actual colors in the skin, so crank the saturation up on a copy of the reference, and look at the actual hues in the skin.
Look at this painting. I got to spend many hours studying it, when it was on display at the Met in NYC. That skin has very little black in it, it's all purples and violets and blues and greens and crimsons. It's fascinating. Look for color in skin, the body will reflect different colors across the body. Use darker hues for darker areas, not black. Black is rare in nature - but not in photography.

Mostly, this is above your skill grade, but with work you'll get there. Keep working on anatomy and color. Stop using black. We're artists, we GET to use any color we want, and black is just ugly and flat in a piece like this.

That's the thing about books, they can give you information, but the real work happens on the paper, with a pencil. (Or on the display)

I don't think there's a ton of merit to finishing pieces, you get a lot more mileage out of just many slightly cleaned up sketches (with some basic block-ins if you feel like) rather than one or two highly rendered ones. Or at least, that's how its been in my experience.

Everything. As a beginner, you won't master anything, you're working on everything, overall. If you only have a small amount of time to dedicate to art, then your progress will be slow - but if you feel like you're not progressing, switch to something else - go do some work on perspective, or portraits, or a still life.

Your example isn't bad in any way for a beginner, but you're a beginner. it's fine. Keep at it.

How is this shit? You need some line confidence, and could define your contours a little more aggressively, but over all, there's nothing really wrong here.

(Okay, the feet are a bit of a cop out, but it's not the end of the world. And you need to focus on hands)

You're getting there. You're stylizing, is that intentional? Because real eyelides, especially the lower, will be curves, not an angle like that. Also, don't outline the highlight - just don't draw there. Define a lash line, too - our brains look for them, and we get the "something is off here" if they're missing.
Center the pupil, too - our brains look for that.

I can concede that you're gaining mileage and speed with a high volume of drawing, however I feel nothing will show you exactly were you stand what you've actually retained better than creating a serious peace and getting feedback on it. If something drawn bad in a grind section there not much stake to it because what's a foot in a sea of 40 feet? but broken wrist, or a backwards cock after poring hours into a something you were proud off, you'll learn exactly what your weakness are real quick.

Only thing making this "uncomfortable" is the head shape and direction. The head just looks like sticker plasted on. Have her look straight ahead away from the camera instead. Otherwise it's alright
