IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

>trick
edge control, fundamental property of painting. different artists get this result with soft brushes, or soft smudge brushes, or lightly textured chalky brushes, and for hard edges either lasso or just good old fashioned painting. if you zoom in on the sleeve you can see the blending taking place, and if you look at the collar you can see the hard round re-stating that edge. no trick to it, just learn to paint

Bros I'm kinda lost. I got several of the books mentioned in the OP sticky and I read the first chapter of most of them, and did some exercises, but I don't know which one to fully commit to.

I started with Fun with a Pencil and did some blooks. That was pretty fun but I don't know if it'll help me trying to draw faces and bodies right now. I also started Keys to Drawing (did the hand exercise, pretty fun) and Vilppu's Drawing Manual. The last one seemed really interesting and approachable from the beginning but it sounds and looks more advanced?

For reference, last time I drew something """seriously""" was 15 years ago in high school. Knowing that, which one should I pick?

The others are about stuff I need less often and I study a dozen pages every now and then or keep open while I'm drawing, or very general books I stopped reading past chapter 3 because I already had some other book explaining the next chapters in more detail.

picking "All layers" selects the pixels according to the global image instead of only the current layer. If you have a lineart layer and a color layer and use the bucket on the empty color one, "Current layer" fills the whole layer because there's nothing in it and "All Layers takes into account the final image with all layers on it and behaves like you'd want it to.

the checkbox fills an entire selection regardless of content, or the entire layer if you didn't select anything.
"Grow Selection" is used to make the color go slightly further than the lineart. Since you're typically under it, putting 1 or 2 pixels of it makes it less likely to end up with a few white pixels you'll need to manually correct.

By learning to do it. You're just scribbling here. One of the beginning projects in the drawing 101 class I took in college (I thought I didn't need it, but you have to take it, and I learned a lot) was to draw 10 1" square boxes in a row on a page, and then fill each box with every weight of pencil in increments from 10% to 100% - and most importantly, to do it without showing pencil strokes. It's a lot harder to do than most think, and it's a good tool to learn values, and what pencil weights and how much pressure is needed for specific values.

So take the pencil you're using for the darkest value in your drawing, and draw a couple 1" squares and try to fill them evenly, where you can't see strokes, as practice.

Hint: if the graphite is shiny, you're pressing too hard/using too much.

Spoiler; you will not get a true black with pencils, you'll need a colored pencil or charcoal for that.

You don't need to commit to any of them.

Art is a lot of problem solving. How do I draw a face? How do I use perspective? How do i crosshatch? You identify the problem, and then explore for the solution. A good art teacher will point the way for you. If you're going to use books, then you'll need multiple books for multiple problems, there's no one book that will cover it all.

Start drawing. When you hit a problem, see if any of the books you have address it. It's like having a library of manuals when working on your car - you can do basic things, but when you hit a problem like rebuilding a carb, you have to find a manual for it.

the magic wand and the paint bucket are basically the same thing. It's called a flood fill algorithm : you pick one pixel, it checks neighboring ones for pixels with a color close enough to that one (that's what the threshold is for by the way, that defines what's considered "close" to the source color), and if they're close, it puts them in a stack and checks their neighbors, etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flood_fill

more advanced programs like photoshop and CSP have another layer of math to estimate what you really want, compensate for aliasing or for when you fuck up lineart and forgot to close a shape, but both select an area with similar color or lack thereof, the bucket just fills it directly afterwards.

Nothing is going to just get better over time from pure repetition other than I guess stamina.

You're requiring too much hand holding. You have a whole world around you, of people wearing clothing, and a whole internet of images of people wearing clothing.
Do what artists have been doing since the early days - get a piece of plain with cloth. Drape it over something, and draw it. Study how cloth hangs, how it bunches, how it folds. When you have a good feel for that, move onto clothing, and how clothes hand, compress and balloon off the body, depending on the fabric/garment. Then get into textures. It's a process, like everything else in art.

Yes, it will take time.

I've been grabbing reference from online stores and my own wardrobe but all my characters look like hipsters and homeless crackheads, I'm kinda looking for some introduction to fashion to come up with original designs.

So, I'm stuck in this project with the machine drawing in it, don't remember the accurate numbering, think it was 1 - F or something.

For some reason, I got this glaring problem at any of my copies from objects, that whenever I draw the larger shape that will define the object in question, the lines don't connect at all, I'm restating and squinting, but the area around the reflections makes the squinting kind of useless since I have a distinct glare due to light sensitivity and it blurs the lines.

I think my problem is that I'm trying to make a continuous line instead of drawing in parallel lines, making it easier to gauge distance, I'll also try to employ focus on areas with weaker reflections.

I'm going to try again after tomorrow (can't do it tomorrow because of work), planning to spend 8 hours into the book and get the project done.

What he is saying is that people in the learning process are rushing their work to finish it fast and rarely seeing polished and properly finished work.
Then he goes about practice, time and getting better overtime.
But on his last tweet he says you only become faster by practicing a lot while taking it slow and going step by step on building your drawing and after a year you'll hopefully naturally shave off 1 hour of your average time to finish a piece

I'm not going to prove that I know what I am talking about (because I've since deleted all of my research) but I still want to get this out there if anyone feels discouraged in their drawing process.

I've personally found that after 150 drawings of the same thing, or drawing that thing for 25 full hours, you become COMFORTABLE drawing that one thing. After 250 drawings or 50 full hours, you become PROFICIENT.

I've tested this when I was in my copy-grinding stage. While I didn't retain any of that ability after quitting for a year, I did learn this little truth.

Here's the process that you go through:
>25 Drawings = No idea what I'm doing...
>50 Drawings = Am I wasting my time?
>75 Drawings = Intense Frustration!!! Do NOT Quit here!!!
>100 Drawings = I kind of get it now.
>125 Drawings = This is actually kind of easy.
>150 Drawings = I think I want to experiment now.

I've tried this with hands, faces, feet, ect.
Every single body part I went through the same process and it doesn't matter how many hours I put in, I ALWAYS went through the intense frustration stage.
All you need to do is push past it though.
Acknowledge it but push past it. Don't let your feelings stop you from trying to draw something.

Personally, I would recommend first learning form and perspective before trying to copy something like this because you don't want to fall into the trap that I did where all I did was copy lines. (I did retain a very, very small ability to draw hands decently because of it but it is negligible compared to if I were to do the same thing with the knowledge I have now.)

But if you're into Anime, you could make it a goal to draw 150 anime heads. Maybe make it simpler on yourself and exclude the hair and facial features and stick just to the head shape or do it all at once.
Then you can draw 150 eyes and 150 hairstyles and at that point, you'll be pretty good at anime heads.

So that's just my little speech. I can't prove it but hopefully you'll test it out.

>> No.5238257

>>5238249
I'll add that the only reason I'm saying this is because there are people that keep saying that you have to draw something 10,000 times in order to maybe be good at it which is just not true.
They get this idea from the 10,000 hour rule which isn't even accurate either.

150 Drawings is more doable and approachable than 10,000 Drawings is.
That is what I personally found through my own research and is what I recommend for anyone that wants to draw something that isn't too complex.
(You definitely should not expect to be able to draw the ENTIRE human body only after 150 Drawings.)

Again, I can't say I have proof of it or that it works so you'll just have to take my word for it or ignore it.

Natural lighting, and more pressure to do it quickly.

Both can be worthwhile reasons, but your image shows you could use more work on form too. You can study form from your PC fine for the most part, but real 3D could still make that easier too.

You probably spent more time posting it here than actually drawing it. No wonder you're having problems.

As for advice
>Draw bigger
>Draw more
>Shadows are probably the last thing you should worry about , you should be focusing on the overall figure and proportions more rn.
>Follow a figure drawing course .
my reccomendation is the villppu studio courses. You'll easily find it on the video course thread that gets posted occasionally.

The very premise of talent means that there is no "why". If there is some intrinsic quality that makes other people good at art, then your lack of that quality is also intrinsic. A part of you that is missing and cannot be replaced. If there was something you could do to gain talent, it'd just be skill.
