IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

Sticky document:

Take your time, you can do it!

I've had this same problem.
You want to make clean edges.
Soft edges where there is light, hard edges where there is dark, while following the shape of the object.
And unless the outlines are getting hit by strong light or because of the material being highly reflective, you want to always have a hard edge.

>> No.5219298

Your proportions are off and your characters feel flat. If your characters don't feel real on their own they won't fit into the background, also there isn't a lot of colour matching happening. Individual elements looking good don't equate to a good composition. Design your background and characters to work together. Cool concept though and the clothing folds are really nice.

I'm having serious problems where I get stuck on one sketch and can't move on to other parts I need to improve on. I can spend the entire day making the same mistake of duplicating a sketch that doesn't look right, and to keep wanting to fix it instead of just doing something else

Sometimes when I do move forward and actually start the real work, it just doesn't look right because the foundation is shit and then I just go back to fixing the sketch only to spend even more time wanting to tweak those parts

I've tried using a timer, taking short breaks and figure models, but it still hasn't made the problem go away and its getting to the point of being completely unproductive

TL;DR Is there any tips to stop overthinking and gain some confidence to work? I know art is a long game of improvement where mistakes are necessary to grow, so any advice would be appreciated thanks

I've been reading Drawing on the right side of the brain and have been doing the contour exercises but don't really feel like I'm getting into the R-mode stuff she talks about. Some of my contours look okay and others look fucked (which doesn't bother me much) but I feel like it's taking me a longass time and she says very explicitly to not move on to the next segment until you feel it. Should I just keep going with it for a bit longer?

Heres my attempt.
I've found that looking for certain landmarks on the head helps a lot. One of particular importance imo is the < shape where the cheekbones and the brow intersect. You can then draw a line around the head from there.
I think the loomis head is kind of useless for anything beyond establishing the initial orientation. I suggest marco buccis planes of the head video series - I learned a great deal from that.

better in terms of what i wrote, but there's plenty more wrong. reconstruct the whole head - the nose is too short, the mouth is too far down but simply moving it up would make the chin too big. it also doesn't connect properly to the nose - where is the center line? it skews to one side. the eye socket is better placed but not constructed correctly, looks like it's protruding from her face. the forearm i'm sure you can guess is too long and the upper arm isn't foreshortened properly so it looks too short. why is her head so big? and by flooding half of it with pure back you've managed to avoid having to accurately construct the rest. like i said, take a step back from the black and focus on accurate drawing, THEN put light on it, otherwise these issues will persist

In one point perspective horizontal lines go hotizontal, vertical lines go vertical and depth lines go to the vanishing point.
The grid in picrel is kinda useless because i made it without respecting perspective (there should be a lot more horizontal and vertical lines going to the vanishing point in the depth dimension), it was just a sketch thing to make me feel the illusion of depth on the canvas. When learning perspective you want to set up a proper grid tho, you can even use blender if you don't want to follow all that Robertson autism.

Honestly if your drawings don't "look like" the character you're trying to draw it's most likely because of basic mistakes in the construction of the drawing itself (eyes not in the right place, skull not the right size or shape, etc). Keeping a character consistent is mainly just about keeping the proportions the same. But you need to have a correct drawing to start with, otherwise it'll never look right.

you will need to make a separate fill for objects you want to separate, doesn't matter if it's the same grey as long as it's on a different layer

as for filling the lineart, either do it manually with a round brush or make sure the lines are closed (no holes in the outline) and then you can do it with a magic wand selection

Different layer. I see. So I... copy the lineart layer, put the copy underneath the lineart, fill it with something, clipmask it, and then I add those flat colours and then clipmask them as well. Each flat colour is it's own layer. Do I understand the process correctly? I am figuring what that vtuber ina is doing, since she did one video in krita and is obviously professional.

>> No.5221427

no. the fill is just a flat shape, the lineart is separate. lineart on top - filled "silhouette" underneath - flats clipmasked to this filled silhouette. if you copy the lineart, you'll end up having two instances of the lineart overlaying each other.

there is no silhouette option, either you block in that grey shape manually undearneath the lineart, or you make a selection with the magic wand, which will only work assuming your lines are closed and don't break anywhere (otherwise it will select inside the lineart too and break the shape.) if the lines are closed, you magic wand outside them, invert the selection (probably something like select -> invert), and then ON A NEW LAYER UNDERNEATH YOUR LINES, fill it with grey or any colour

No, he was right about it. The nose bridge and the eyelid especially. The smirk was debatable.
I can’t offer any advice. My influences are comic books of the 80’s and 90’s, some alternatives like Jeff Smith’s Bone in particular, but also Todd McFarlane’s shit. And of course Disney movies of that era. I’ve never grinned fundies, read loomis, or even studied anatomy. I rarely even use references. All I’ve done for the past two years is “just draw.”

I am, it's maybe because it's a realistic looking character, whenever I draw it, it comes out as a stylized version of it, those versions don't look bad but not only do they tend to look different from one another, they're also not as I'd like them to look

head slightly top heavy but maybe a stylistic choice, mouth and nose too far down makes the chin look stupidly small and the nose too long, the eyes are a bit off, the connection between the head/neck/torso feels unnatural partly because of the strange angle of the head, so try to find some ref if you can. from this angle i'm sure we'd also see the other ass cheek somehow but the leg seems to keep going up, so figure out that connection aswell. i love the line quality on the far leg but it's completely missing everywhere else - the hair is almost pushing chikin scratch and the face has a completely different line quality to the rest. if the whole thing was consistently like that leg it would be 10x more convincing
