Why do people shit on chicken stratch? It adds so much character to the lineart you wouldnt get from clean lines as long as its not overdone.

No it isn't you absolute retard, chicken scratching refers to specifically when you draw a line defining an edge of a plane with multiple shorter strokes instead of one stroke that goes the full length of the edge. You can be messy, you can draw a stroke multiple times over each other, but unless it actually takes multiple strokes to define an edge of a plane, it's not chicken scratching.

That term has been parroted so much it has lost whatever meaning it once had, if any. Originally it referred to a very specific kind of stroke done by certain beginners. I would produce an example but I don't save that kind of shit

If it looks good it’s not chicken scratch. Simple as that.
Chicken scratch is a general term for when people get bad results due to excessively messy or unconfident lines.

going over a confident line with another stroke to define it better is not chicken scratch, chicken scratch is building one long line through multiple disjointed lines that end up making it look "hairy"

>> No.5219586

chicken scratch is many lines drawn over multiple times to cover up the lack of knowlege of where exactly it should be. the directions are all over the place and form is ambiguous at best. which looks like chicken scratch
sketchy art style is many lines drawn over multiple times to create an atmosphere. there is clear knowledge and direction

In order to save this whole fucking thread:

What separates messy yet appealing sketchy line art from chicken scratch is that usually there's points where the lines are solid and clean.

The dynamic use of clean lines mixed with messy lines gives a certain amount of focus in very much the same way that different line depths can imply shape and form of something.

Your eyes are subconsciously drawn to the thicker and cleaner lines first where as the messier lines have less emphasis. It implies forms and shadows.

If the whole sketch is covered in messy lines it comes off as chicken scratch and unappealing because there's no rhyme or reason to the messiness. Your eyes can't 'rest" anywhere and it's become hard to look at feel the implied shapes and forms.

In that Ram artwork, you can see how there's messy lines but there's also thick clean lines that help shape her silhouette. Most of the "messy" lines are implying the chaotic volume of her hair.

chicken scratch is nice at a minimal level. There's nothing I hate more than that ultra-anime smooth lineart made with stabilizers, it's so soulless. I think what you're really looking for op is textured lineart, it makes art more lively and detailed and doesn't look unconfident.

The average smooth lineart enjoyer probably works on their art zoomed waaaay too close in. art is meant to be viewed at a distance, a little sketchiness isn't that big of a deal

Can I see an example? Can't differ a stabilized line from natural if there is no scratches or discontinues.
