Some artists who study from photos (and not try to become professional photocopiers) learn how to vary their values to produce amazing results. It's believable. There's also a guy on youtube I forget his name who makes huge graphite powder drawings.

so you can tell me Loomis?
I've posted my work several times and since proven the fact that no matter how long you grind, you can't improve. Which is why I keep saying the "just draw" mentality is arrogance and ignorance combined as I've done exactly that and have not improved.
Not to mention that I started with copying manga and then moved onto real life and I'm still a shit beg.
Just Draw doesn't work and I am a testament to that. Posting my work would solve nothing, neither for me or for anyone else as people would just spam "Loomis" which is unhelpful and I tried it and it doesn't work and seeing some beg artwork cannot prove or disprove my claim.

Yes. But this vaseline covered shit doesn't teach you anything. There's no structure, no anatomy, no clean definition of values. Works like thees turn you into referencelet who can perfectly render, but can't draw to save their life.

You want to learn to realistically render with the pencil? Step number one is to stop smudging and start learning anatomy and construction.

I don't think about it in terms of realism and style. To me what people would say is realistic, isn't because drawings communicate ideas. So a drawing that is more "stylistic" or more abstraction from real life is just being more specific about what they are saying. Just like the director of a film where they show you where to look with the camera and what is important through the lens. So a style that is more realistic isn't focused on what it is saying. It's saying everything and there is no hierarchy of what is important or what its point is. So when we communicate ideas in real life we make a point just stylistic drawings do, so in that sense, they are more real than a "realistic" drawing

It's a fucking pencil, what do you want people to say? You can't get more simplistic and easy to use tool than that. As I said, the only rule is to not smudge, do hatching instead. You press lighter to get lighter tone and harder to get dark tone. Work from light to dark, slowly ramping up contrast (because erasing to go lighter is a bitch). If you need to cover big area with tone, shade with the side of the tip (again, using hatching), you will get a thicker line. This is why many artists sharpen their pencils by hand like pic related, to get really long tips so that they can shade with the side. This is also how you can get smooth gradients, by shading with the side and going from light to dark. No smudging required.

Beyond that, there's no tool-specific tutorials. Just learn anatomy, perspective, and all your other fundies.

Nope. This is actually ink + chalk. It's an example of an animal rendered extremely realistically with very rigidly defined structure. It wasn't intended as an example of pencil drawing technique.

Nope, this is actually charcoal. Charcoal 'pencil' like pic related, to be precise. Which is functionally identical to an actual modern soft pencil.

The fact that we are even having discussion on the medium in which it is drawn just shows how irrelevant it is. The technique is universal, and can be applied to a regular graphite pencil just as easily. It's literally the same fucking thing.
