IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

Sticky document:

Loomis is honestly the most fun way to learn.

>Loomis
Draw these cartoons, now draw things you love! Now draw from imagination! Invent your own figures and stories! Study up your anatomy when you need to. Draw from nature. Know the type of art you want to make! Your individuality is of the highest importance! Collect references of interesting things and organize them!

vs

>250 boxes
>250 cylinders
>100 treasure chests
>mirror rotated planes
>draw these bones
>Draw these beans
>draw these robo beans
>draw these superimposed straight lines

Like, I understand the importance of exercises, but a lot of art courses with arbitrary assignments that instructors put together can in fact be not appropriate for your own artistic journey and the kind of goals you want to accomplish. You should just be given the theory and then apply that theory to the kind of drawing you want to do. Being told what to draw and what to do can be stifling and slow down your growth as an artist.

Ok I know it's really autistic to ask "how long until I can do X"

but I am starting from nowhere, literally drawing circles and cubes right now. My dream in the future would be to create a manga as well as a visual novel. Multiple if possible. So when we think about a typical fantasy/supernatural battle-ish Visual Novel, how skilled are the artists typically? Think about something like Fate/Stay Night. H-h-h-how long would an average human ape take to reach this level?

I know manga would probably take even more skill

How would we do that? we would just ended up having much less fun than if we were drawing for fun and learning much less than if we were doing the exercises. not to mention that some of those are physical training not just theory, we need do the reps for it to be effective. like with superimposed lines how can we implement this into a normal drawing?

you're not doing anything radically different, you're just implementing a new technique into your workflow. you're still drawing whatever the hell you wanna be drawing.
>superimposed lines
this and the other early DAB lessons are entirely about pen control which you'll also learn by just putting in time drawing.

This is a bit too advanced for your skill level, going by the mistakes in anatomy. You con work on a painterly style working on studies building a scene like this, while also improving your overall skills.
I'll pick one issue - of many, for you to look at:
The perspective and anatomy of the rider. His legs, astride a horse, would be spread wide. You have his legs connecting at a central point in his lower torso, with no accounting for a pelvis. That, and the perspective and construction of the saddle is all wrong, horse's backs don't go straight back like that.
It's not bad, it's just far above your skill level. Look at the mistakes in perspective and anatomy, while working on developing a painting style. Pull the pieces of the scene apart and work on them separately. Work on horses, saddles, the human body, and textures and lighting.

>>5209735
There is no answer. Some people work fast, some don't. Their speed or lack of it has nothing to do with you. It will take as long as your skill level allows - some good artists might do that in an afternoon, others a week.

I'm going through Fun with a Pencil because I want to learn how to draw people but I'm struggling with some of the facial accents he does, or at least understanding the building blocks of the face. Nose, ears, eyes, and mouth placements I understand, but it's things like cheek bones and chins I'm not quite picking up. Are there rules for the more foundational parts of the face like there is the more expressive parts (i.e eyes go on the dividing line, nose begins where the vertical and horizontal lines meet etc.)?

Just use simple balls for the cheek. There's a reason why you're drawing blooks, its because you're not supposed to overthink the anatomy at this point. Once you get down the process of construction, immediately go draw other stuff you like. Find photo references and draw the stuff in there using the process that you used in drawing blooks.

entirely up to personal preference.
right image size? whatever aspect ratio you want, usually in the range of a few thousand px per side, usually about 150-300 dpi depending on what you plan to do with the image.
brush sizes are also personal preference, though they largely depend on how big the canvas you're working on is - a 5px brush will look much bigger on a 100x100 canvas than a 1000x1000 one.
just find and use a size that allows you to comfortably create smaller details. i've been using something like 4-6px on a 2000x2000 canvas lately and it's been fine.

Yeah it's weird how you can have a drawing that seem to pretty much match the reference but still look nothing like him. I'm not sure myself where exactly the likeness comes from. I'd maybe guess that you haven't managed to portray the depth at which the eyes sit and how the nose protrudes, apart from the obvious things where the forehead line doesn't match the reference for example.

It would be cool if someone who's good at caricatures could comment.

What I'd try is to copy more the feel of it. It seems to work much better. Take the mouth for example, it has a certain emotion/feeling/look to it which you haven't managed to copy. Or the eyes in your drawing they have a more blank stare it feels like

Dude what are you talking about. DPI? Thats for printing. I honestly don't know why programs have settings for it. I don't know what it does.
But I do know it doesn't change the image in any way. Or how you can display it. Your monitor defines how many DPI you can see your image in. Only thing that matters is how many pixels.

I started drawing about a month ago, going through Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing book. Made myself a goal to draw at least an hour a day. I almost finished the book, copying and trying to understand the drawings and explanations in the book. But now I'm not sure how to proceed. Did I realy "get" most of the things in the book? Should I just go through everything again but extra slowly to realy grind everything out? I realy like how beginner friendly the book is. It realy does simplify alot of difficult concepts and construction. I actualy managed to draw a few basic body sketches that didn't look complete shit, so there is some progress. So I don't know, is it worth going over the book again or should I just move on to something else and return to the book when I need to refresh something? If so, any suggestions for a book that could complement this one?

Also something has been bothering me. I don't have a muse, something to inspire me. I don't have a favourite artist who's style I'd like to know how to draw or anything like that. My only goal currently is to draw at least one hour a day and to get better at drawing. Could this potentialy bite me in the ass? Not having something to aspire to?
Sorry for the long regurgitation, been stewing for a while.

can't say anything about that book in particular, but it's mostly up to you. do you feel like you've understood the concepts and how to apply them, and are you satisfied with how your work is looking? if not, go back and practice some more. if you are satisfied, then move on and do something else, while trying to keep all those things you learned in mind. it's something you've gotta feel out for yourself, there's no absolute answer.

as for the rest of your post, it's less about finding inspiration and more about making sure you have long-term goals set for yourself. inspiration can be a big part of that, like 'i want to draw like artist xyz', but it doesn't have to be. you've set a goal for yourself to learn to draw, but why are you doing it? what is it that you want to be drawing? are you going to be stuck in a loop of studying for the sake of studying and burn yourself out? it's good stuff to think about and figure out now rather than later.

Practicing gesture drawing photoshop, is there a better method than simply :
1. loading pic into photoshop
2. having 1k layers with different gesture pics, half of the page being blank
3. setting a 30-sec/2-min/10-min timer that beeps and then jumping to the next gesture

seems I could make some solid progress with this simple method

I have asked many times in many places how I should do it and only thing I learn that any way to hold the stylus is wrong. Only right way is go /trad/ and hold the pencil like any old master hold. Also I prefer to place my fingers as on the top-left pic, but hold the stylus almost vertical as on center pic because it's easier to control pressure.

Ooooh yeah, it's because I am trying to work on my straight lines. So I am using MS Paint or Paint.NET

One because it boots up a lot faster than Krita, but also it exposes the fuck out of all my little shitty muscle movements that ruin my straight line. Currently looking at Draw a Box, Peter Han, and Dan Beardshaw and they all say that my lines are going to suck for a while until I grind the fuck out of trying to draw straight.

If you PC is weak and hasn't SSD for Krita then use AzDrawing-2 (with en translation from dev.art, can mirror canvas, has a lot of layer modes) or FireAlpaca (little heavier but can rotate canvas and has a lot of texture brushes, can foldering layers) or MyPaint if you won't buy SAI. Paints is bad for drawing because they can't eat fractional coords from tablets and rounds it to integer killing line smoothness. You can switch to Krita when you will ready to spend a hours in serious artwork required a rich toolbox than other soft hasn't.

Oh, my bad, I means AzPainter-2. AzDrawing-2 has a lot of useful tools for monochrome work and animation but can't into color (ever grayscale, only opacity is supported). But you can use it to animate when you studying forms rotation, just switch to animation mode.

Thanks guys. My lines are something I've been trying to work at late. More control, better use of line weight and figuring out where not to put lines..

>how do you usually do your lineart?

Short controlled strokes. Too much ctrl+z, even if I am cutting back on it. Still can't confidently pull off circles/ovals so these are usually two or three strokes which I think you can notice makes some of the curves look a little angular.
