>Do you think Marvel or Dc ...
I couldn't care less about what Marvel or DC does.
What needs to happen is for another publisher (maybe a new one) to innovate both in content and format, and to get books in places where non-nerds congregate, like Circle Ks and head shops.
Think how EC Comics shook up the industry with their lurid subject matter and art/writing that was better than the rest of the industry. Not to mention stories you could read in one sitting without knowing 30+ years of continuity.
But realistically I think the future of American comics is more likely online than on paper.

DC is working on their Batman Black and White series which has decent success.
But it's not something that can carry over to all of their publications. Children in particular are drawn to color, so children's comics need to be colored to sell well. B/W is usually for comics aimed at teens and older. Plus, superhero comics have always been colored so it's a long-standing tradition at this point.

I'm a HUGE Wood fan (Wally Wood, that is). There are a few essentials I couldn't live without. I'm partial to the dead wood versions of these books, but some can be found online if you look around (cough, readcomiconline, ahem).
First there's the two volumes of The Life and Legend of Wallace Wood by Fantagraphics. Both have biographical details, interviews with Wood's peers, in depth articles about his work, and of course great reproductions of his work. There's also ...

But maybe you just want to read Wood's best work? Most would argue that the stories he illustrated for EC (usually written by Al Feldstein or Harvey Kurtzman) were his best work, often described as his "beautiful clutter" period.
Fantagraphics currently has 3 volumes of his EC work: Spawn of Mars, Atom Bomb, and Came the Dawn. They're in B&W, which is fine, because Wood's work works best in beautiful B&W.

There are a bunch of others. Galaxy Art and Beyond, which collects Wood's pulp art. Cons De Fee, which collects his erotic work.
Then there's the IDW Artist's Edition, which has some of his best EC stories printed from the original artwork at full size (15 x 22). It has to be seen to be believed. I gained a whole new respect for his work when seeing it in this format.
Unfortunately it's out of print and goes for wild prices online. It's sad because I think every aspiring artist and fan should see Wood's work 'in the flesh.'
There is a smaller Artisan Edition (8x12) which is probably worth getting, despite the size being a big reason the Artist's Edition is so appealing. Hopefully one day IDW will do a reprint or sequel.

yep, I didn't forget him though, his style is not as like Romita as Starr. Drake was a massive influence on Neal Adams though, Adams had a medical comic strip (cant remember the name atm) which he sells on his website which is rather nice. Other Raymond style artist (Rip Kirby era) which is a list I know I'll miss some, is John Cullen Murphy (big ben bolt), Steve Rude (nexus), Warren Tufts (casey Ruggles) Dan Barry (60-70s flash gordon) Angelo Torres, John Prentice (rip kirby raymonds replacement after his death), Paul Gillion, Russ Manning, Jose Luis Salinas, David Wright, various Modest Blaise artists, Ken Bald to name a few. Many have their own variation on the raymond style.

I can remember reading an interview with Drake, because I liked his art so much. He descibed his work day, getting up, making breakfast for him and his wife, then he walked down to a little studio he had not far from his house when his wife went to work, he worked till noon, broke for lunch, then back to the studio till 6, had a martini, then dinner with his wife. Sounded like such a comfy lifestyle and a good way to keep your artwork output constant.

Its a weird nostalgic experience, that movie. Its not my favorite animated movie ever, but I love the tone of it, the music and the nudity, its such a oddball thing. And Tarrna is like a post-apocolyptic Red Sonja or Xena. Tarnna has the same erotic fascination to me as Serpieri's Drunna.

Here is the original pencil concept art for Tarrna by Chris Achelios, they had to simplify her costume big time for the sake of making the animation faster. Heritage Auction's site has a bunch of Heavy Metal cel art and production art from the movie, very cool stuff.

Something about most digital painting turns me off. It's a visceral reaction, it's too polished and artificial to me. But no doubt that guy has chops.

These are some of the most dynamic comics I've ever seen, the designs look more fresh than anything that came out in the last 10 years, the colors are just epic it looks like some high budget animated movie
If you compare these issues with the stuff Ramos has made in the last decade they were way better

Any collections of The Spirit, his most famous work. You can also find the individual issues as they originally appeared newspapers decades ago on Comicbookplus, but most of them are yellowed from age.
A lot of people consider the Contract With God trilogy as his best work. They are correct, also read it.
He has instruction books out on comic theory, structure and expressive anatomy. Check those out.
Heritage Auctions and Comicartfans have originals of his work if you want to do studies of him. Sometimes, entire issues of originals get uploaded too.

Well that story was a take on the Japanese television version of Spider-man. Aside from Jamie Hewlett i can't really nail down Vella's influences. I know he's pals with James Stokoe and i can see some similarities between there work.

oh yeah, Eric Powell. I picked this up and it blew me away, best comic I read in a while.
