I don't get why anyone would want art of someone with a style that is clearly incompatible with the subject matter they want the artist to draw. Isn't that a waste of money?

He's come back after all and I still like his style, but sometimes I notice a big difference between some of his drawings, which have almost-perfect posing, and others which make really obvious pose errors, so I believe he probably still traces much as shitty /ic/ people love to do. I get D&D commissions and they seem relatively normal. If you're into fantasy it's pretty easy just to draw some D&D character commissions and not feel fucking drained unless the character is truly garbage.

I used to have an online friend, we had a video game reviews website together (that was 10 years ago). While I did provide 90% of the website’s looks, the dude never ever stopped asking me for drawings for his own personal stuff with vague descriptions (“draw me a giant panther with a saddle”) and it was never ending, and got nothing from it except “thanks”.
Same thing from a cousin, he asks me some drawings for his gf all the time. Yeah sure I did some for fun and also it only takes me 10 minutes but you get the drill.

I was charging peanuts to “break into” translating (yes, I’m retarded), and I wanted to kill myself with the kind of work and clientele I was getting. At some point I snapped and raised the price several times higher and suddenly I was working with nothing but grateful, very professional clients.
Like, I’d fuck up somewhere in the script and they’d email me back asking if it could be fixed, I’d immediately go through the whole script again just to make sure there’s no more fuckups, and they’d write me an email thanking me and telling me they’re very satisfied with the service and they’d be coming back. For fixing my own fuckup.
Contrast that to retards demanding they video call me to brief me, insisting I stream myself translating, and giving me a list of words I should use in the translation of a text they don’t understand because they like the words.

Already been said but this is why you never offer your work for dirt cheap/free, because you'll only attract people looking for cheap/free work and more often than not they'll be the pickiest clients you'll have. Even if you had good intentions and wanted to practice, your time is better spent doing things for yourself (or if you want to do nice things for people, even anons in drawthreads tend to at least say thank you).

Once you get to the point where you can do commissions at a price that's worth your time, you'll most likely have very few issues. Once you start charging more you'll attract people who value your work at that price, and most people are chill to work with. You can even take submissions via google forms or something and then pick which ones you want to do, and then even if someone turns out to be a pain you can just cancel and refund.

The other does them for £50 and gets frequent clients for typical "coloured pencil pet with text". People eat pet portraits up so it's something she could make decent money from.

You might not like it, but what can get you a ton of commissions if if you find cliques of roleplayers or OC owners. They can be massively cringy at times, but if you are available to draw at any time they slightest idea for an art piece strikes them, they'll be hitting you up.
More then one platform can work too. Depending on the quality of your work you can upload it to Hentai Foundry which has moderators hand approve the uploads so if you pass their discretion you're at least not competing with noncoom, non art, and low quality on a platform. You can also self upload on Gelbooru, whether it's cool or not too. There's a code to not upload your own works to Gelbooru but it is not enforced /at all/ and only a few people seethe about it. I spotted one dude having 80 Twitter followers who self uploaded and sourced it to his twitter there who later exploded. If you upload under a different name literally no one can prove its you doing it either.

Also if are really serious about your thing. Then you need to go to professional sites were most pro artists tend to go to look for real job offers, like Artstation, there you could find a lot of artist that have pro quality works in various styles and subjetcs.

For example, if you put "Art Nouveau" in the search bar of artstation, you are gonna find a lot of art with that in the tittle, related to that style that you are looking for. So you just navigate and look for one that you like. Check their profiles to find ways to contact them, and offer the job.
They are several artists, in general most are average (not all are pro), so take some hours to look all that you can, and take notes of the ones you like. You can even set in the search preferences the media hey use, like digital or traditional.
