have you tried doing gestures daily for at least 30 minutes a day for a somewhat significant duration?

have you tried overlaying a 3d model if you get stuck with foreshortening? sometimes a little crutch is no evil.

have you tried copying 3d models from the modeling window (such as blender).
get an angle from the viewfinder than time 120s and draw a simple copy, also needs to be applied for the duration of months to see effect with deliberate practice, but the trap is in overthinking it and creating a mental threshold.

I hope this 'advice' may at least somewhat aid you.

Alright, time for DADcast status update:

I'm having a couple problems with google drive to upload the podcast so everyone else on the team can check it out. Hopefully this will be resolved soon. Once everyone gives the okay, it'll be published. The other two are in progress.

As pointed out, since it requires quite a bit of work, checking between team members and has to fit in the schedule with everything else, it can run a bit long. Sorry for the delays.

Regarding who participates, remember that this is completely voluntary. So while I'd like to see this or that person on, in the end it's in the hands of whoever wants to sit down on the chair. so there's not much that can be done about that. But if there's a particular dad you'd like to see on, remember that you could always tell them you'd like to hear them in an episode.

All in all, we should have the next episode up soon if no further problems arise. I'll keep you posted and tell you on Monday if the issue is resolved.

Two value studies are a genuinely great way to practice so many skills. Shape, finding the terminator line between light and shadow, composition, simplification, and so on. Its also a pretty good way to start a more detailed painting. I see a lot of very experienced artists who still do two value paintings, either as an exercise, or as a way to plan a composition, or even just as a first step in their paintings. Some artists like Mike Mignola and Eduardo Risso basically do 2 value paintings, and their work is dope.

I thought the one on the right was the newer one, for what it's worth, and I like the energy in this newest drawing a lot. I think it might be helpful when you start hatching to pick a strong light source and build some large, bold shadow shapes based on that. Keeping the hatching really simple could help too, maybe just have it mainly going in one direction throughout like how he does it at around 2:15 in your video. Also, don't be afraid to leave large parts of the illustration white so that the hatching has something to contrast with!
here's an example of how I might do it, with the light source above the guy in the first example and the light coming from the fire in the second drawing. let me know what you think

The firespell thing giving off light was something I realized after the fact and was like "Damnit!", but then I was conflicted thinking it could be some evil magical darkness spell that sucks light into it. However, I'm too shit and /beg/ to convey that. I think the reason I keep hatching the entire thing is I want to convey that they are dark colored robes, or at least grey, but it looks way better when things contrast heavily like how you have it. Tomorrow I'll try leaving blank spaces, assuming I remember. I keep forgetting half the shit I want to do when actually drawing it, even if I remind myself right before drawing it. I'll also try the fire giving off light like how you have it.

One thing I'm doing, and I'm not sure if it's adding up to much, is I'm basically looking at the same 3-4 references for 5 minutes before I draw. Then I close the references and try to draw the picture with them in memory, then go back and compare how I remember certain things to how it actually is and note down the differences. At the beginning I wanted an evil wizard person towering over the viewer and pointing down at them grinning maniacally, but it's like a different picture every single time. It's pretty interesting. I also timebox it to 25-30 minutes which puts a bit of pressure on.

I've been nostalgic over AVICII songs and so sad that he died. I guess that's mental illness. I wish that someone could have intervened and saved his life, but is it possible that he would not have made such great music if he wasn't mentally ill? I saw his documentary and he had such pressure and drive to perfect his music.
