Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

>> No.5185266

I'd like to preface this by saying I don't think my work ever looked western, but I think this may be valuable to some.
The difference between the mindset of " I'm making something inspired by anime or trying to look sort of like anime" vs "I am making anime" could be the difference between making it and not.
When you tell yourself it only has to be inspired by this or that then you are more likely to give up before you are done. If you see yourself as somebody who draws anime, you are going to be more likely to work at it until it looks good and to your liking.

I'd also like to mention that anime is a set of values, fundamentals, and shared teachings and techniques, not a static style. I think it is more valuable to draw what you feel would look good and right. The anime teachings are home to styles ranging to yoh yoshinari's to tekeshi koike's, to masamune's to arawi keiichi, to masaaki yuasa, to rumiko and so on, don't let yourself be restricted by what you think anime should look like.

Usually for a meme to spread it has to have some element of truth to it, things like Loomis or Hard Round brush are good examples of this.

Asian genes is the same, it might not be the end of all things but its quite obvious it grants tremendous advantage when it comes to art. If someone were to meme for instance black artists (they have tried) it goes nowhere because its lack of merit doesn't allow it to float.

This doesn't look beg. It is unpolished but shows a clear understanding.
Have you tried to ink it and just fill it up by hand on a layer behind it? It could possibly look really nice. Maybe try just a slightly thicker brush too. Be careful not to be too clean though, if it takes more than 15 minutes to ink something this simple you are probably overthinking it.

Looks like any other normal beginner drawing to me, anon. I think you're just projecting insecurities.

However, if you really feel that it has more soul than anything that anyone else is putting out, I'd wager that it's likely because this person actually enjoys drawing and sees it as a fun activity, rather than a soul-crushing grind that only exists to "get good" at. A mentality change can do wonders for your art and your ability to learn.

People are just projecting at this point; there literally is not a standard for what "anime" is supposed to look like; it's a variety of different styles, and differences in stylization is what led to the individual flavors of the genre that people like.

What is "authentic" anime? Gatcha illustrations? Bleach? Dragon Ball? Berserk? K-ON? Why is the response always "cope" rather than a real answer to this question?

Guys, you really have to let go of this meme stuff. You're just hurting your own chances. I know that drawing can be really scary and frustrating, and that you can feel worthless when you've been grinding fundamentals for the longest time and coming up short on progress, but the fact of the matter is if you keep blaming that lack of progress on something that isn't really a factor, you're never actually going to get better because you're not going to be able to properly address your shortcomings.

I too have been in positions where I felt like I was just spinning my wheels and not learning anything. The thing is, though, I always found a way to reassess what I was doing or what I was trying to learn, and ended up making progress again. If you put your lack of progress on the shoulders of something unchangeable or intangible, then you're basically admitting defeat. Look at your habits, your workflow, and your time investment, not some magical state of attunement.

I doubt that anyone is actually going to read this or care, but hopefully at least some of you manage to shake yourself out of this weird mindset. It's only hampering you. Let go of all that and focus on the shortcomings of your technique or studying methods and you will see results, I promise.

I know that sometimes obvious answers can be frustrating, but this really is the solution, even if it is easier said than done.

>where
I think the first thing to keep in mind is that there is a difference between people liking your art and saying so and a "hugbox." I'm not saying that you in particular conflate these two things, but I've talked to a lot of people who have. The creation and presentation of art is not and should not be a 24/7 misery-fest. It is entirely possible for people at all skill-levels to create work that others end up enjoying for a variety of reasons. So, if you're inclined to leave an art community simply because people in it are friendly and compliment-giving, I would advise against it.

That aside, my advice would be to start asking around on Discord. There are public server lists that you can filter by subject. Join a few of the art-centric ones and ask around to see if there are any available who would be willing to critique your work, or have access to any learning-focused servers that they can invite you to. Learning-focused Discord art servers are plentiful and tend to be reasonably tight-knit, particularly if they are filled with skilled and helpful people, so there are a few important things to keep in mind in terms of behavior:

-- Don't vent all the time. Art can be annoying and skilled people know this very well. The odd bout of frustration is fine. Asking skilled people how they deal with frustration when trying to learn is fine. Constantly complaining about your skill or lack thereof will only annoy people and brand you as unteachable.

>> No.5194237

>>5194235
>>5194142
-- Be patient and focus on the mechanics of learning. If you're not progressing as quickly as you would like to, do not complain openly and constantly about it, especially if those you consider to be more skilled than you are seeing progress where you might not see it. Even progressing "quickly" requires patience, as you will rarely see tangible drawing-to-drawing progress at first.

-- Relax. If you're high-strung about "progress" and "making it" all the time, people are going to distance themselves from you because you're going to stress them out (which will in turn impact their own ability to learn on their own as well as instruct you and others). Freelancers and professionals are generally already stressed out from networking, workloads, personal projects, and other such things. If they think about "stress" when they think about talking to you, then you're going to alienate yourself rather quickly and make people less prone to give you any advice.

Really, it's all about mindset. Be willing, be open to learn, be patient, and ask good, detailed questions that show an attempt to try and deeply understand the subjects at hand. People appreciate earnestness and will. They stall out and distance themselves in the face of aggression and despair. They, like you, have felt those feelings before, and they will likely try to help you get over them. However, you have to *want* to get over them and make the effort yourself. If they believe that you're just going to sit and soak in those feelings forever, they're going to stop helping you because they won't believe it to be worth their time.

Good luck anon. I hope that you manage to find a community that suits you.

Sorry I did not see this before.
I personally studied animation through trying to figure out documentaries, studying anime and production materials, and asking OLM and Trigger staff on twitch stuff that filled in the gap. While I don't have any 1 resource to give you I'd gladly tell you what I know if you have a specific question.

>How do I start?
Get a cheap intuos, grab a copy of flash cs3(it's free now). open it, press flash file action script 2 F5 extends the frame you are on, F6 creates a new identical frame, F7 creates a new frame, < and > to flip between frames, blue squares at the bottom of your timeline are onion skin options.F8 creates new symbol, you should animate inside symbols and then put them on the timeline, that will allow you to put them on the main timeline, resize them and put fx on them like controlling a clip on the timeline in premier or like how filming stations worked in the cel era. press y, look at the bottom of your toolbar, set it from straighten to ink, you can use those to draw uniform lines sort of similar to working with a pencil. press B, go to the second bottom option in your toolbar (a black circle), choose the third smallest size and set the smoothness to 50. Don't worry about being clean, add colors on a layer below. CTRL ENTER exports your animation into swf, use swivel by newgrounds to convert it into webms, mp4, or video. Don't worry about doing exercises, start off by just trying to animate what you want to animate and figure out how to do it, look into the teachings after you played around with it.
Get this version of flash so you can view the animation right away. https://archive.org/download/flashplayerarchive/pub/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp_32.0.0.371_archive.zip
Later down the line learn csp. csp allows to take scans to finished film and to draw natively, giving you the choice to go either way.

I am aware that it seems odd that I am recommending a discontinued format and software. No other method or program allows you to jump straight into animation or feels this natural to control. It is probably the most bare and direct contact with animating fbf with the fastest output and the least amount of steps.
I would recommend down the line trying out paper, because it is faster in the long run, easier to clean up and polish, and a lot quicker for detailed work. I actually use flash to composite and time all of my work, even though I work on paper.
everything science saru made is made on a flash X after effects type dynamics, and bahi JD also animates in flash if you need a benchmark of what can be done.

Stop calling yourself that.
Knowing one has lots to learn show a good head on his shoulders, but kicking yourself down is to your detriment.
It is an /ic/ invented term for people who still don't even grasp early fundamentals.
Inking is generally used to redo lines in a cleaner more defined way. Yeah, that would mean lineart. The words you use for colors don't matter, just make a layer, place it behind your clean lines or lineart and color, preferably so the paint doesn't go outside the lines unless that is a style you are aiming for.
Please don't talk yourself down or be afraid to ask, friend. Hanbare.

You would think so, right? It's hard going from realism to anime, I keep wanting to stick to real proportions too much, and learning to basically symbol draw again is difficult. There's tons of shit about drawing moe and how their proportions change, its basically an alien baby, cool got it, I can do that. But on stylizing men, I just can't get it right. What features to emphasize, how to stylize them, and again as I said the only stuff I can find is for little boys, old men, and shoujo pretty boys.

I guess it's time to just do a bunch of studies myself.

I have a question. What's with the people that complain about not being able to draw because they're not asian, but then when they get shown examples of people that can draw well that aren't asian, they just throw out the free "lol but that's actually shit though". I don't really understand the purpose of the argument. If they truly believed this, they would just not bother with trying to draw anime because they're not asian and therefore will never be able to draw something good in their eyes. Otherwise, they're just wasting time wallowing in their own self-pity. What's the fucking point?

If I had to guess? Validation.

They're posting about it because they feel that their dreams are dashed and want other people to say that it was out of their hands from the beginning so that they are relieved of the responsibility for failure.

The problem is that this leads to a vicious spiral. Why? Because the only people who are going to validate this are people who feel the same way and thus have no skilled work to show. The people who are actually worth hearing from--those who are at least moderately practiced--are of course naturally going to disagree, because in order to get to their level and beyond, the very *first* thing they had to do was throw that and other, similar mindsets out. That way of thinking is so far behind them that the idea that people are hanging onto it becomes laughable or sad, since dealing with those sorts of thoughts is basically step one. You can't learn to draw if you think you're naturally destined to draw poorly.

Honestly at this point, you should study again and again artists you like and deconstruct everything they do. Trace over their faces/muzzles, observe their construction, and try to recreate it exactly.

What screams western to me here is the anatomy and stylistic choices that clashes with your goal of looking eastern. You characters are always pudgy, always have big feets, overly detailed faces/body parts. For example, this dude >>5196208 looks like he's wearing a mullet and his cartoonish symbol nose clashes with the rest of the design. Plus, the boots look very out of place and look like they belong in a kid's cartoon.

Overall, I'd suggest you try and focus on improving your fundamentals first and foremost, stop with the huge cartoon feet, study face construction from other artists and fix your hands/anatomy.

does anyone have references for underwear at this angle? I can't find any real examples at this angle and I feel like I've been doing it wrong.

How do you get the hair to be transparent but also show the layer below while maintaining color?

Sorta how the pink is above the eyebrow on this photo

Clipping mask
Erase with 60% opacity eraser
Or put merged hair on top but only for eyebrow, then lower opacity

Critique?

>> No.5198019

What do you normally do in a day related to art?
How do you practice? What things do you do?

So far I do figure drawing everyday for 30 min, copy an artist for 30 min and then make a drawing for 2 hours.
I want to spend more time drawing and getting better but don't know what else to do.

Does anyone know what this pose is called? I see it all the time think it's really cute and want to look up more poses like it but I don't know the name for it or even what it means
