IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

Sticky document:

Can anyone point out how i'm shading this figure wrong? Every time I practice, I feel like i'm getting something off on the form, but can't pinpoint what it is exactly.

>> No.5182900

>>5182888
You're placing shadows randomly without putting enough thought into the underlying forms of the figure you're drawing. Here the light generally seems like it's coming from above and to the left, but (all directions below are our pov not the figure's):

- right "ear", the crease has shadow as if light coming from bottom left
- right arm has shadow as if light is coming from right
- tits have shadow as if light is coming from above (right boob should be in more shadow than left boob)
- left leg has shadow as if knee is indented into the leg, when in reality it should be catching light
- left calf is shaded as if light is coming from below front instead of having the right side shaded and left side in light

Do some more exercises with primitive shapes, cubes, cylinders, spheres. Then move on to more complex shapes: two joined cylinders, a sphere connecting two boxes. These are the underlying forms of the figure (leg is two cylinders connected with a sphere).

You're not far off. You just need to think harder about where you're placing what because mistakes in shading make it seem like the figure is inconsistent/wrong.

>> No.5182904

>>5182888
>>5182900
The method I found best to get a better feel of where shadows lie is to do the opposite of what "common practice" tells you. Instead of drawing shadows, cover the entire figure in shadow and then slowly erase away where you think the light should fall. It'll help you avoid making mistakes like instinctively shading that crease "because that's what creases look like, right?"

Do this a few times (after doing that primitive forms thing I mentioned) and you'll start getting much better at it.

I like how learning non figure drawing stuff feels so easy in comparison. You have to put in so many hours to get to the point that you can draw a figure that doesn’t look like complete trash but then if you want to draw a turtle or something you can just do that almost effortlessly with reference. Learning to draw a turtle is so different from the human figure but it feels so much easier to get a satisfying result, it’s almost like a freebie

Yeah you draw a straight line vertically that lines up with your flat vanishing points, and draw the tilted horizon line according to where you want those to be. After that you know what to do. Draw a box in perspective.

Any artists here want to collaborate on a short comic (and if we work well together continue it)?

I'm a writer and I'd love to work on a fun comic with someone. I would actually prefer an artist who's art is very amateurish, like One Punch Man's webcomic art (pic related).

I have about a half dozen strong ideas to pitch. If interested message me and we can chat about it on discord or something.

I have no idea what the actual fuck you are attempting to accomplish. It's not a complicated subject. Are you making this in MSPaint?

Every plane lines up with the vanishing point. That's the entire rule. You're "challenged" because you're not doing anything, you're just making random lines.

>>5184287
I mean, the simple question is; Are you actually making any effort to try and measure or keep your lines consistent? Or are you just moving you pretending to look at the reference and then just doing whatever after? You're allowed to actually spend time observing the relationships between details of your reference, where things start and end, how close or far they are away, etc. You're allowed to take actual measurements. You're allowed to look as many times as you need before making a mark. You're allowed to use a grid to help measure things. So if you have many tools available, why use none of them?

Yes, I recommend actually spending time observing the reference and then trying to put exactly what you see onto the page. Start actually trying to represent real forms and actually caring about the marks you make. Right now you're not paying attention and you don't care, you're just hoping that if you race through it, it's another "practice" done and you can move on.

You're not making any effort to overcome the symbol-drawing hurdle. You're letting your brain take over and replace what's really there with a snapshot of what you think you're seeing. Start actually trying to recreate each line, use contours and define the forms. And do it again and again until you either get so fed up of failing that you do it correctly out of spite, or you give up.

What is your goal? Because if it's just to make wonky cartoon people, then I guess you're on the road there. But if you're actually trying to draw real human beings, I think you need to study construction and anatomy and stop symbol drawing.

>>5184407
Here's something you probably won't hear because I only ever learned this when I took my first life drawing class in college; Your picture is "done" when it's actually done. Lose the whole mindset of "I'm just drawing this one part, the rest doesn't matter." If you're drawing a live model or a still-life, or whatever else, you draw the model and what's around it. Because even if you say "Well I only like/want to/need to draw this part, not that part", then you're going to end up as some asshole who can't ever finish a picture.

Real learning starts when you're done with the fun stuff and you have to work on the shit you don't like. The backgrounds, the small details, the stuff your brain tries to shut out. Working on that, and forcing yourself to grind through it and actually finish, is how you learn.

So that's the point. You're not done until you're actually done. So either finish, or don't start.

The same way you draw the lines. Those don't exist on your reference, yet you manage to draw them because your brain can pick out edges. So you need to make an effort to understand planes too.

Literally just draw a curve. If it doesn't look right, then do it over. Your brain already has this info naturally, you just need to represent it.

If I stop to think about it, it's rare I ever actually visualize a whole drawing at all, but usually I'll just get an idea for some interesting pieces initially, sometimes specific and sometimes abstract. But what I initially imagine and what ends up on the paper are rarely close because honestly the actual image in my head is irrelevant. What is important is that I can break it down into actual information and then use that information to inform my pen as I try and convey it on paper.

But more often than not I'm doing any "conceptualizing" as I work. I may have a vague direction to go in, but most of the time I'm just making marks and shapes in a certain direction and letting myself find interesting ideas to pull out of those and flesh out. You don't need to picture a drawing "with color and texture" because you have the ability to work that stuff out later.

>>5184448
That's actually just how human brains work. There was a meme going around 4chan a while back about "lol who can't picture an apple in their head lol", but the actual fact is your brain just isn't meant to materialize detail like that. Our brain is wired for concepts and general ideas that we can easily model, but stuff like fine detail and specifics are not actually things we're built to be able to pull up like a photograph in our heads. Generally, the only time your brain can actually build granular detail is when it's prompted by some sort of stimuli (usually visual) so it can just take that and slot it in.

Also, what is your fucking hurry, my guy? It's not a race, you can slow down and actually put a little but of effort into your lines. You're not accomplishing or learning anything by just drawing random squiggles and scribbles and hoping that it looks kinda sorta like a contour. >Every plane lines up with the vanishing point.
Every parallel line has the same vanishing point*
The problem that anon is having that he is trying to force non parallel lines in to the same vanishing point. His pyramid is tilted, yet it is pointing it's base to same VP as the basic ground plane lines. If the lines are not parallel, but still at the same vertical angle, they have different vanishing points on the same horizon line. If the lines are pointing at different vertical angles (aka tilted) their vanishing point is below the horizon line (downward tilt) or above it (upwards tilt). If the object is tilted in both horizontal axis and vertical axis, it's VP moves respectively both in vertical axis and horizontal axis.
The 1-point or 2-point perspective system can be misleading because the true number of VPs is dependant on the number or differently angled objects that you need to have in perspective.

do you develop a sense of how to copy the space relationships between things as you improve as an artist or is it something you're born with?

slow down and plan your lines more

Also one trick I learned from /ic/ is rather than judging in terms of rectangles, use triangles instead. For example rather than saying her head is half the height of her torso, visualize the triangle between her elbows and nose as an equilateral triangle. Something about using triangles instead is easier.

This isn't bad, there's actual effort here which is laudable, and you've got lines and forms working well. However, I think a lot of what you're doing is on a shaky foundation, so your final product is being carried by the detail and not the strength of the anatomy under it.

Your "gesture" isn't really accurate and isn't capturing the weight and movement super well, and I think you could probably push your angles a little bit more. Really dig in and try and focus on the flexing, stretching, and extending. A gesture is supposed to capture the essential information about a pose, and this particular pose is 100% about that big, dramatic stretch of the torso/shoulder, so let that shine.

As far as your anatomy goes, I think you're missing the ribcage when trying to block in your sketch, which is why your torso ends up way too thick and not feeling flexed enough. It's ok if you have to exaggerate a little in order to sell your figure drawing.

Overall, you're fine with the end product, so just spend more time focusing on the underlying construction and your drawings will be really solid.

>> No.5185201

>>5184892
Pick one or the other. Either you care about the lineart, in which case you need to actually think about things like line weight, balance, and form, or you care about the color and value selling that stuff, in which care your lineart is secondary and just placing a thin 1px black line over a painting isn't going to do anything but get in the way.

>> No.5185208

>>5185017
Yes, but mostly you have a poor grasp of both anatomy and form. Stop, reverse course, and go back to basics. You need to start understanding forms in 3D before you can try and work with complex shapes like layered armor. That's why pretty much everything in your drawing is completely flat, as if it were 2D facing the camera, it has no form or perspective to it, because you don't understand how to do that yet.

So start from the beginning and work on your fundamentals. Learn how to understand objects in 3D, learn how to draw figures and anatomy, and then come back after all that.

>>5185068
It would help if you spent any time actually learning anatomy instead of just not doing it at all and then complaining that people told you it sucked. You're skipping past all of the basic fundamentals. Go back, work on your basics of perspective, form, and then anatomy and construction. You need to actually learn something, not just pretend.

Quick fix with PS.

Pelvis is small length wise, torso is a bit wide.
As for the foreshortening, the problem is mainly with the knee/quad and lower leg, they were not properly in perspective and didn't have proper volume.

The differences are tiny but when working on more difficult poses these differences matter.

>So if I understand correctly, I need to exaggerate the lines of action to get a more dynamic pinch/pull at the midsection. And also be more intentional about the ribcage placement at block in to help my proportions and pose?
The torso is the building block of anatomy and pose, everything centers on it. It's where the most dynamic and active muscles of the body are, and so getting it right is going to help you in the long run.

You're looking at the whole figure, but you're not breaking it down into it's component parts which means you're losing a lot of the underlying anatomy and it's causing your forms to drift. Try and keep things tighter, and really feel where the push, pull, and stretch is in your figure. Don't be afraid to exaggerate with your forms, if the figure has a big stretch to it, push it even farther and really let yourself understand the mechanics behind it.

On this figure you can clearly see where the ribcage pushes out against the serratus muscles and there's a lot of pull and stretch in that side. Focus on the big shapes and angles, and you can spend all the time you want polishing and detailing after.

Remember that a sketch may look quick and rough, but that doesn't mean it should be lazy and you can fix all your mistakes in rendering. Get it right first, so your rendering can just be relaxed.

From what your diagram shows and some other material I've seen since the drawing, it seems that a lot of the dynamism in a pose comes directly from this spot. Perhaps it's because I'm still stuck on trying to get out of symbol drawing, but all the pics I linked are like 100 times better than anything I can do.

This background is disgusting. I just don't have any ideas for what to put there. And it bothers me how short I made her torso.

I made some polish on the lineart, followed the advice to draw thicker lines where shadows or lines intersect, and varied a bit the width as well,
How is it going?

On the plus side, visualizing 3D shapes is becoming easier. Gotta do some more tutorials.

You want to think big. Work out the large, important shapes you want to block in first and then get smaller when you're ready to work on the details.

Help me out bros. I'm trying to be as autistic as possible and measure everything properly to get my proportions right but something doesn't quite add up.
What's going on with the third set? I scaled everything based on the head, and so far it seems to be alright down to the nipple, navel, crotch and knees but the feet seem fucked up. Which diagram do I follow?

>> No.5186706

>>5186685
Not everyone has exactly the same proportions. IIRC 8 or more heads is idealized, most people have fewer. Loomis actually goes Into this in Figure Drawing for All it's Worth, the book you took the left image frome.
