Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

>No need to attend the school (full online)
>Possible to transfer (into the university department?) in the 3rd year? I could be wrong, maybe it's saying that 3rd year student in the Uni could transfer to this course.
>Annual fee is 323k yen / 3k USD
>Gets a 4-year university graduation qualification?

Now the part I'm not sure is, whether the course is 4-years, or it is just one year but you get a graduation qualification that is equal to people who attend uni for 4 years.

>painting over is so easy compared to doing on my own
yeah, you have to break through the early and painful stages of a painting. they were the hardest part to get through for a long time because the painting looks like shit during most of it and only comes together in the last 10-20%. i did that as a 10-15 minute warmup to keep practicing first passes that set me up for the refinement stages. spending an infinite amount of time on details is easy. my goal for this was using less brush strokes to get an impressionistic painting of the original. the more i can solve early on and with few brush strokes, the easier it is later when i come back to refine edges and fix smaller problems with fresh eyes. i hate how inking feels digitally compared to traditional so i'm focusing more on figuring out my painting process.

painting over is much easier, i'd say focus more on the stages you dread. you have to be able to get yourself into and out of trouble by problem solving during the earlier stages. you seem alright with the refinement, you should probably focus on going from a blank canvas to a first or second pass to figure out what works for you.

>> No.5176041

I have the opposite problem, for me the fun part of painting is coming up with the design pretty much so once the basic shapes and colors are in i lose all interest in spending 200 hours adding details.

Because first world places like europe and america have no work ethic drilled into them for artistic endevaours. There is an advantage growing up exposed to anime constantly from a young age as it does refine your aesthetics towards that more, and the culture emphasizes hard work, but there is no genetic component. If Asians had the genes to be physically competitive you'd see them dominate sports as well, it's just a different culture that drives them more.

i'm the same way. i have the ability to render but find it tedious beyond a minimal amount. my finished drawings are more like sketches and i'd like to try more finished work. my friends who spend 10-20+ hours on each painting wish they could consider a sketch "finished" like i can, i'd like to see how i could bring my drawings to a further stage of refinement. so i'm trying to take advantage of my weaknesses and use that to help me. like the 80/20 rule or pareto principle, i'm figuring out the least amount of work i need to do for the parts i hate the most.

the mindset i recognized was that i hate my options being limited. a sketch is great because there's so much you haven't committed yourself to. the further in the painting or drawing process, the less options you have and more effort it takes to change things. avoiding the effort is a form of procrastination for me that i just have to work through if i want to finish anything so i'm trying to set myself up for success.

You have literally no evidence for this. There is no statistical analysis available. If there was, you would have posted it already. You got this impression from browsing pixiv and twitter and seeing lots of stuff you liked.

"Asian genes" will not help you get better at art. Hard work and dedication--two things that asians are *heavily encouraged to have,* will help you get better at art.

This is among the most harmful conclusions on the asian jeans debate, this implies that no one outside asians can have a decent upbringing and discipline, things that can be changed unlike genes.

>> No.5177122

As someone who doesn't believe in asian jeans in the slightest, I do think that it's true that if you're instilled in an environment that encourages hard work from an early age, you're likely going to get a head-start in terms of diligence.

I do agree that anyone can work hard and diligently though, and that people should A.) realize that this is possible and B.) realize that this is what art takes, so that they can get back to work and start making proper progress. Just because you did not grow up in an environment that encouraged you to work hard at your art does not mean that you cannot create that environment for yourself, right now, any time you want to.

"Asian genes" stems from a cope-focused mindset. They see no gains despite working to whatever degree they *feel* they should or can, and thus conclude that there is something intrinsically wrong with them that releases them from responsibility. In reality, they should be working harder, smarter, or more diligently than they are. The "asian genes" cope mindset prevents the holder from pushing beyond their current tolerance for work and study or from reassessing their studying methods, preventing them from progressing at the rate at which they are truly capable.

So how come we see barely any on a global scale. Like if I ask you to name 5 German passable anime artists you can probably come up with 2 or 3 tops, this exercise can be repeated to any country which doesn't have an important Asian demographic. On the other hand if I ask you instead to name 10 good Canadian anime artists you can easily come up with several but to no one is surprise they will probably be Asian, since Canada has an important Asian demographic. Anime in the west was a relatively niche thing until not too long ago, kids wanting to learn anime wouldn't have the same possibilities or resources to do so as nipponese kids and anime being less widespread as in the east means less people will get to try at it. I'm mexican and here I've barely seen anyone do anime right but I've seen shitton of people nail just right the artstyle of DBZ by drawing Goku or whatelse, why? Because DBZ became so popular every single kid for the last 30 years has been a fan of it. Westerners in general have better genetics suited for building mass as well as a myriad of other genetic traits suited for fighting.

However there is an important point I would like to raise. In my experience both Mexican and LATAM artists usually tend to achieve very good quality when it comes to Anime, granted most of the people I met where from second or third generation Asian from countries with an important Asian immigration in their histories like Peru, Brazil and Mexico. However I have seen plenty of good LATAM artists which at first glance appear to be endemic so I believe somehow LATAM artists are also well suited for Anime and seem to have some sort of pseudo Asian gene, in their case however they are crippled by terrible quality of life, few opportunities and a terrible society, yet I'm puzzled as why this isn't a factor at all on SEA artists.

From my experience, Asians, Italians, French, Mexican and LATAM artists seem to be able to make it.

I have a few dozen word documents filled with analysis of other anime artist's works, from facial feature placement to use of colors. When I finish studying a piece, I try to make one of my own keeping in mind what I learned.

I also stopped drawing digitally for a year, only focusing on paper with a mechanical pencil and a random pen as my tools. I just drew countless things over and over, whatever was in my mind. Faces, hair, anatomy parts, or things in front of me, even photos in magazines.

I focused on learning as much new things as I could, and it came to dissecting every art I saw that I liked, even non-anime stuff. How did they do it? How can I replicate that? It seemed too out of my field at first, but now it's reachable.

So, study various things, force yourself out of comfort zones, and don't look at things on the surface level.

The human genome has been not fully mapped, but we today have great understanding of it thanks to the human genome project that has concluded in 2003.
In biology, favored genes are genes that lead to the next generation, that includes survival and fertility.
As you may have imagined, we are not hard coded to be able to represent 3d structure on paper in a manner that is fun to look at. It is a skill we learn, it is not genetics.

What is a lot more impactful, something that can create a lot deeper of an impact on somebody, is cultural.
>What is the correlation between african americans and making music?
>what is the correlation between being Japanese and being an animator?
>what is the correlation between being a country girl and liking horses?
The answer is culture. Culture sets people on certain paths and pushes them forward.

The funny thing is, eastern art for its entire history, even when it started becoming renown, was really flat and lacking fundamentals. People like Hokusai were revolutionary, enough to be famous in their lifetime, and very far from the standard. Thinking like his as well as western influence pushed the japanese art away to being what it is today.
Take a minute to compare and contrast ukiyo-e to kuchi-e, you will notice how serious of a difference those influences made, and how .
Either way, since when have you become a person who lets fate be written for him, anon? Are you really gonna sit and cry if nature told you you can't do something? is that all your fighting spirit amounts to, 'niki?

Don't you see anon? Genes are responsible for creating the most powerful artists possible. Asians are coded to have thinner hands and lack body mass compared to other nationalities. They are, by God's design, better suited at precision drawing. They were born to speak faster than most do in their native tongue. They learn faster, they draw faster, they stand for efficiency by nature of their genes. So long as they aren't tainted by the western influence of Disney's works, Asian genes are destined to be aesthetically stronger than other countries. Need I remind you of Japan's cities compared to those drab hellholes Americans find themselves living in? The states are so reliant on conventions to make themselves interesting, an occasion which gathers up Asian made intellectual properties and Asian artists for their alleys. Just as African genes lend themselves to making rap lyrics, Asian genes lend themselves to shut ins, shut ins who funnel their time into drawing to be the artists we see today. That blasted work culture Asia defines itself with went a step further in creating waves of artists who outmatch the rest of the world as well. Gone is the choice to complain about the hand that's dealt, the one job that had an open slot, and in its place is rising up to meet the standards of outsourced animation.

This is linked to the first reason, since they think that it is not a serious subject of study, they don't think about acquiring specialized education on the subject, which is what anyone In another area of knowledge would do, for example, if you study real music, you don't learn by yourself, you just hire a music teacher or you attend an establishment to learn music theory.

Side mouth is a representation.
It was done in the past because cels can't add transparency to cels below them, meaning you would have to redraw the cel otherwise. It stuck because it has a charming look and can be faster than drawing the whole thing yet it reads just as well.

I only seen it talked about in a thread on /a/ sometime either late 2019 or very early 2020.
I drew this edit because we were talking about a similar thing. The frame on the right is actually my edit as well, I lost the original. I thought it was charming as well
Found this as I was writing this. Yeah. the original is charming and perfectly fine for a frame. It is out there, which makes it easy to pick on, but it works perfectly fine for the situation.

I tried Keys to drawing, Hitokaku, Huston and Loomis in the past but I am having a hard time applying them to studying other artists, and I still couldn't get out of the symbol drawing stage.
Should I just put figure drawing books aside and focus getting better at doing accurate 1 to 1 copies/studies?
Also how to study other art and figures the "right" way if I am still symbol drawing?
Should I focus on the underlying form and construction or the lines and shapes first?

No, it wasn't this one. It had like an orange and/or white background, and it used the full body of a girl to show how to shade her skin. In Steve Ahn's drawing workshop, he mentions that a lot beginners tend to draw construction/guidelines wrongfully or just end up not using them in the way they're intended to.

I think this may be what your problem is, you got good enough fundies but you struggle at applying them to stylized drawings.

Do you mind showing some of your studies or gesture sketches?

>>5179562

A lot of people shat on this, but honestly it is clearly a step over your previous stuff, even if there are some minor issues here and there (ex: length of the left leg, positioning of the neck)

>>5180068

Use darker and more saturated shadows on the blue. Mignon just roughs his shading out with a pen brush and then blurs for soft edges- I personally use the smooth watercolor and paint and apply brushed in CSP for the blur. You can also use the lasso tool technique.

>>5182515
>>5182605

You get less stiff with time. You slowly get better at recognizing what looks off and tackling it. All of these are subtle, from the looks of it, especially the face, you are going the right way. keep it up
Forgive me for the lack of digits on the fix, I am going to be animating for the next few days, I refuse to get carpel tunnel from drawing fingers with a mouse.
The stiffest individual parts for her would be her right arm, our left, and her feet. technically, they are not wrong, but they do not fit the body they were drawn on the way they were drawn. I think the feet are slightly too big, girls especially have smaller feet. they also don't really git with the body, her torso is moving around in a very flowey way but her feet don't match that at all.
If you look on the right most diagram you can start seeing the biggest anatomy issues right away
There are problems with some of the connections on portions of the body and the legs not being matching sizes
>I erased some unnecessary lines from the neck and jaw
>I tweaked where her left arm connects to the body to fit with the torso
>you drew her labia connected to her spine, I moved it up to match the torso
>changed her right arm to match the pose
>made her feet paddle to match the pose
>shortened the back leg
Keep it up, ganbare
>>5182806
Nice work
a few notes: You should consider at this extreme of a lighting putting lighting details on the nose, otherwise it looks like her face is flat.
you should also examine her left arm and leg (our right), some of the shadows and highlights are done in a way that flattens or gives weird shapes to the form.
Your biggest mistakes is multiplying shadows. the gold and drapery cast another shadow on all the objects instead of receding into the painted shadows, which opposes the way it would in nature.
If you put two books infront of a flash light it won't make the resulting shadow darker.
The squish on the breast and tummy are really nice.

I'm gonna dissect it bit by bit.
>suicide
The gift of life is an infinitesimally small chance and you won it, You have the grand chance to consciously experience the world around you. Do yourself a favor and take the idea of throwing your life off the table.
>quitting art
Are you really gonna be happy leaving the thing you truly wanted to do by the wayside just because you felt inadequate in your late 30s? Probably not. If this is the one thing that is important in your life simply keep fighting for it. Maybe you should change your approach, maybe you just need to put more time into it maybe you need a teacher, that is for you to decide.
If you are a healthy human doing healthy things and you don't climb electricity poles for fun you may have several decades to look forward to and to keep becoming good.
>talent
Talent doesn't work the way most think it does.
Talent amounts to "how easy X step would be in X skill"
Talent comes for individual skills, not art as a whole, and it can come in different ways.
For example:
>artist 1 may just have an eye for picking nice colors right off the bat, but getting those amazing colors or certain complicated lighting colors will take them decades
>and artist two may take decades to get in colors to where artist 1 was in year 1, but after he overcame that the latter part of figuring out the subtlety and difficult colors may come to him at light speed.
Simply because our brains are wired differently we learn different portions of different skills in a different pace, this is the true face of talent, and the most you keep going the more likely you will to eventually blast through. Having an early skill for something is just one form of talent
Masamune is a good example of an artist who has a slow creep, but he never hits a ceiling. you may say that doesn't sound like talent but as he is one of the most skilled artists in the world right now and seeing how a lot of people hit a very hard ceiling that is very lucrative.

>Ina'nis
For you , she is just a brat who showed up, has millions of viewers, and has great art.
It is very unlikely that she has gotten it on a silver spoon.
It is very possible that she, now in her probably mis to late 20s, has been drawing since single digit age. She is asian which generally means a good environment for learning art, so it is possible that she not only had time to grind early, and a lot of it, but also a good environment to grow.

>but what if she didn't
the chances are slim, but I could see someone like her get this good in only a few years, instead of being intimidated by her existence you should use it as a proof that you can push even further.

>time spent
time spend isn't what's important, it is seconds doing something right. How much time are you pencil to paper? how much time are you thinking through the problem, how high are you aiming, you should always keep that in mind when pushing forward, those are the real things that count.
