What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

hi, guys.
i'm working on a female barbarian avatar that's going to be used in a twitch podcast. it's been...a really long time since i've drawn anything and so i'm super rusty. i'd like some critique on the design as well as my anatomy (i'm looking at reference, i just don't feel like i'm representing it accurately). If anyone could provide that, it would be much appreciated. the screenshots are in chronological order from right to left with the leftmost being the most recent revision.

>>5172050
haha, you're right about that.
as far as the design, i'm worried that i'm sticking too close to the trope and should be doing something more original. just looking for some second opinions to maybe spark some new ideas.

>>5172017
You're definitely good on the actual drawing part, but as far as design goes I would push against the kind of "evening out" of features, she looks pretty generic.

Try to give her a more unique design by pushing her face a little. I gave her really bushy eyebrows and made the lips really thick.

Also you should look up some historical examples of viking armour and incorporate some of those ideas into her design.

nice job

That shadow isn't nearly dark enough, she basically doesn't have a nose at all. How you draw the nose itself is up to you though, just copy a lot of different styles until you find one that fits with everything else you've drawn (actually the ear is too cartoony compared to the rest as well). Cool eyes and mouth and hair, you've definitely got something if you keep refining it. One last thing her head is kinda small, unless you're trying to make her look really muscular.

>>5178319
What do you mean by "storyboard-esque stuff"? Because if you're trying to actually make storyboards you did not succeed. Storyboards almost never have color, if they have shading it's minimal, and they should be done extremely quickly; no more than like 15 minutes for a single panel. If you just mean you want it to look like a scene from an anime though I guess it works, very dynamic and easy to read. I'd just move the entire composition to the right a bit because there's a lot of unused space.

>>5178369
Gotta work on your proportions friend, his head is tiny and the arms are super long and thick. You elbow should come to around your navel and your extended hand should read halfway down your thigh. Cool use of texture and color though, the underlying structure just needs work. Plane doesn't fit at all but it did make me laugh.

Gesture is a little stiff, even if that's exactly how it looks in the reference it could be pushed even further to really sell the strength of the hit. I'd have the punching guy leaning into it more, and the guy being hit should have his lower body closer to his opponent so it shows how far his head is getting knocked out of place. Proportions are a bit off too, the punching guy's forearm is very short, and his head seems a tad big. Very nice cross-hatching though, shows the form and anatomy quite well.

Well step 1: do the highlights
The colors you've picked are all pretty bright and desaturated though (except the boots) so any lights are not going to look very bright. Don't color on a white background, color on a middle gray or tan or something and you'll see. Obviously you can't do highlights on clothing that's already pure white.

This is really neat. Really like your use of shape and the mood lighting and color tones.

Gives off a very 'creepy forest friends' sort of vibe. You probably have a very amusing sketchbook haha.

>>5172004
Plenty of character here. Just need to tighten up your form more. I like the looseness of your line work here, contributes some nice texture considering it's already digital, but the lack of confident use of shapes sort of drags it down a bit more than needed. In my humble opinion.

You'd also likely benefit from better understanding of light & shadow from improved use of shapes.
Really good color contrast btw. That teal hair adds some personality.

>>5172404
There's a really solid idea for an illustration here. You just need to stop being lazy with your rendering, anon lol.
The mood is there, fiery sunset in a metropolitan city. Manhattanhenge. Pedestrians going about their lives in the backdrop, city bustle, etc.

If this is meant to be an illustration, then you need to invest more effort in illustrating scenes or moments.
It's not even necessarily about being heavy with the micro detail. Although you'd really benefit from highlight certain elements on your primary subject (the girl) & the setting/backdrop.
I'd also suggest to study more form in general. Form of objects like buildings, vehicles. As well as human form.
Good form will only bring out the best in your work, even if your rendering skills are still amateur for the time being.
I promise you'll feel much more confident in your capacities, which will lend itself well to your creativity.

Wow these are very sexy. Pretty tasteful too. Reminds me of classic illustrative pinup art, but with more so a manga inspiration.

The brush strokes are a bit too "airbrushy" for my liking, for lack of a better term Brushes like those tend to give off an inherent digital feel. So it's sort conflicts with the print textures in your drawings.
The idea is certainly there, but it doesn't blend cohesively as it could be. It's not like you need to do the whole mixed media with physical ink drawings. to get as close to those organic results either.

Maybe using a digital ink brush/ pen brush with some texture or using dissolve mode (if using Photoshop).
In addition to playing with multiple textures+ screen tones in blending modes could give better results.

>>5175060
Love this. You've really refined this style of yours over time. I
Although I'm not as much of a fan as your use of colors here though lol.
The hues you use contrast very much. So a more unifying color temperature would really tie your colors together, in my opinion. Something more warm or color, depending on the design or setting, but something either way.

>>5179356
You have some style here. Could really bloom if you invest more into studying composition for illustration & even some creative design as a supplement.

>>5180130
Really solid story telling here. Although the lack of a more dynamic perspective unfortunately flattens the scene. Which is a shame because there are many layers to admire in this. Foreground subject, mid-ground patrons, and the backdrop of Shanghai
More of a focused use of 2 point perspective would really enhance those elements further I think.
Just figured I share my 2 cents while you're in the sketch phase (Assuming you're rendering this in more detail that is)

Very stylish. Love that you've leaned more into that 1990's Ken Sugimori atheistic. Much more cool and less kawaii.

Your re-designs are like if Pokemon were an arcade game lol

>>5184551
Very adorable. Kawaii anime storybook vibes. I'd say a bit more contrast would work. It's so faint that it might as well not even be there desu. Maybe applying more noticeable monotones or some cross hatching could work.

>>5189336
This is wonderful. Very creative use of contrast given the setting. I like the framing as well.
One thing I'd say could use another consideration is how you stylize the stars.
The gray stars work as representation of dim light in the image fine enough.
Although maybe playing with the shapes of the star light would work just as well if not better.

Brighter stars as four-pointed strs, dimmer stars at various sizes but are all white, rather than some being gray. Adds a bit more varied detail without interrupting that nice B&W high contrast of the illustration.
I don't know, just an idea maybe.

Yeah I know, it's something I'm trying to work on. This is actually one of the ones I've worked the hardest on, I spent days but it was just a delivery for a drawthread so I didn't want to keep going. I get a tiny bit further each time though.
>Although you'd really benefit from highlight certain elements on your primary subject (the girl) & the setting/backdrop.
What do you mean? Also yes, I have to work on my drawing skills as well.

Ugh, I was hoping no one would notice the stars are grey. I wasn't sure what to do to add depth, I tried varying the size but it just looked like larger and smaller stars. I'm certain it won't be the last time I draw them though so I'll try to keep your suggestions in mind.

It's a multi-step process, but it's not that complicated desu.
Primarily used Photoshop (for rendering ) & After Effects (for final touch-up + texture quality)

I do the majority of my work in Photoshop by hand, including that hazy bloom.
If I'm mostly satisfied with the results, I'll then import the high resolution image (or frames) in PNG format into After Effects.

[The following steps would require some basic familiarity with After Effects]
>Drag the image(s) from the project window into he "create a new composition" icon

>Duplicating the layer with the drawing

>Then lock the transparency of that top copy

>Change the top copy's blending mode to 'Color'

>Add a blur effect that top image, increase the blur amount until it looks more imperfect.
It's about finding a nice subtle amount, don't want to over do it.

>Select both layers on your timeline and precompose them.

>On that newly precomposed layer, add the effect 'Median' at very low values (between 1-4)
This will muddy up your lines, adding slight color bleeding from the image itself.
More of an 'analog' feel as opposed to an overly clean, digital one.
Depends if you're going for the quality of a remastered blu-ray or the original VHS format.

>Apply 16mm film grain. Turn the film grain layer's blend mode to 'Overlay' & adjust the opacity accordingly.
At this point you can also add slight amounts of chromatic aberration (this can be easily overdone, so a very conservative use)
I'd suggest using a stock video of 16mm grain rather than a still texture. Works better for both an animated sequence or a still frame.

>Lastly add to render queue (make sure your sequence length is 1 frame long if rendering out a still image and not an animation.
>select 'Output Module" and in the 'Main Options' window make sure to change format to 'PNG sequence'

That's more or less the rendering side of things. Sorry for any weird grammatical or spelling errors.

Just to follow up...

I feel like I still haven't got it down. Still need to do more refining. I think it helps if you already have an idea of what you're looking for.
I'm personally a fan of older anime that often featured characters with more natural looking proportions, even if at times exaggerated or abstracted.
I also admire weighted & fluid animation.

Studying cells / frames from several anime you like is a good place to start.
That helped me get a decent understanding of line weight, the shading style, or even the color palette of that particular anime.
Not all anime is created equal, so being mindful of how certain distinct shapes are used to draw an old man compared a young girl will help simplify things

Which sometimes includes observing things frame by frame lol

After doing some frame studies, I'd then suggest taking the methods you've learned from those studies and apply it to everyday objects or real life subjects.
Turn random people or objects from life and try to render them in that style.

Beyond that, I'd suggest studying specific animators from that era. Become more familiar with their techniques and the particular trends from that era compared to other anime eras. Takes bit and pieces from here and there to try and develop something more of your own over time + practice+ & experimenting.
See what works and what doesn't', etc.

It can be a bit challenging if you're used to working with more detail in general. That was the case for me, some of my earliest attempts were too detailed and looked less authentic, far more gimmicky. As far as characters are concerned, I've learned keeping it simple is best approach.

That approach requires you to be more creative when working within certain restraints. You have 3-4 tones and limited amount fo line detail to simplify the subject, while still managing to retain the most identifiable qualities.

I hope my rambling made some sense? lol

Thanks man! These are really in depth posts, I'll definitely make a note of these.
It's a coincidence you bring up frame studies because that's exactly what I was planning on starting today.
A lot of my current process for studying is pretty similar to what you laid out in that second post too.

It was also really good to read about your rendering techniques. That's an aspect of digital animation that I've been intrigued about recently after seeing that first clip you posted and the short film "Puparia".
Usually digital anime tends to look "clean" but that short really impressed me with how textured it looked.
Everything from the linework to the coloring had such a strong presence.

Gotta love Faye and I love your line work and the bit of hatching in her hair.

Wish you gave more focus to her hands though. Seem like an afterthought when compared of rest of the drawing.
Hands tell stories and give personality to characters, it's a mistake to neglect them imo.

Is there more to the image, or just a sketch page drawing?

>>5189618
This is a solid effort, but there is potential to push this so much further, imo.
I like the colors here, and that loose brush work gives it more a dreamy look.
Although having a more define light source as a balance would work better I think, as the image looks flatter without one.
The change of lighting can really make the mood here.
For example, having the primary light source (the sunlight?) come through opening of a door way or windows.
Doesn't have to be that specific obviously, but more define light source(s) would really compliment your illustration imo.

>>5176649
Your work is so distinctive. It has very street art inspired look to it makes it pretty interesting imo.
Your use of markers is really admirable and your color choices are pleasing. Love it when that paper texture shows through as well.
Not crazy about some of your designs choices at times lol, but I find them interesting at the very least.

>>5189725
Solid use of form and line work here. Those little highlights hitting the edges of the banding is a really nice touch.
Although the lighting is on the flatter side. Maybe darker BG+ more dramatic over head lighting would work better?
That cloak looks like it's meant to be luminous. A soft teal glow? Or is it meant to be a shear silk material?
Tighter render would better convey the properties of the various material worn by the character.
I think that's mainly tied to your light source.
