Can I make comic in a western(specifically BD) format even if I draw in an anime/manga style? I hate capeshit with a passion and I don't know if it will also sell with normies if it is good, but adopting a right-to-left format when you're not in japan feels fucking stupid

yes, citing this example made by a Japanese migrant living in France or Italy remembered he wanted to make a manga at some point of his life and got his story published. Manga style reminiscent of the popular manga style of 1970s but the dialog balloons and panel arrangement are definitely Western Right to Left style.

>> No.5167816

>>5167779
You don't have to write right-to-left, that's just a Japanese thing because of how their culture has developed. It's purely based on how their eyes naturally travel through the page.
In the west, we're accustomed to left-to-right, it's really not an important factor.

I have no idea what BD means, Google tells me it's something to do with Belgium but please elaborate OP.

You'll have to forget about the whole selling part for now.. if you're hoping to replicate the success of manga artists but in the western world.. the industry needs time to develop. If manga continues to grow in popularity in the west, we might see an industry appear but it's not going to happen for several decades atleast.

Good on you for hating capeshit, it's decrepit. There's nothing actually wrong with superheroes.. but everything surrounding capeshit is arguably shit. The writing, the format, the meta of how a capeshit series should go, it ought to be dumped completely

Yes.

Some French 'manga' starting doing that because it's what their intended audience is used to.

>> No.5167826

If you want to make comics with influence from manga, it is important to recognize what is worth keeping and what is worth ignoring

For example, it would be a sttrange idea to make a western comic with character names like Mazuki Ishita or something, that's a Japanese name.
The same applies for things like, showing Japanese envrionments like Shrines, their schools, their urban streets... it's not that is bad.. but just it won't be a comic, instead will just be a manga made by a westerner

Instead you should see what's better about manga vs western comics from a more fundametal point of view, devoid of all the surface details

Hirohiko Araki describes the difference in western comics and manga something like..
>in western comics, panels are laid out with the focus on composition and showing characters actions
>in manga, panels are laid out with the focus on characters internal thoughts and emotions

>> No.5167830

>>5167779
You can do whatever the fuck you want. If you have to ask you're probably ngmi tho.

>> No.5167835

Another thing is that.. the problem with capeshit isn't that superheroes are bad, but that the writers, artists, producers, etc behind it are absolutely terrified for trying anything new for fear that it won't sell.

Capeshit has remained virtually unchanged since its inception. Shows like One Punch Man and My Hero Acadamia are superhero but they are not capeshit

Manga industry does not work like this, they see the value in new and interesting ideas. There are no rules in how you can write your story (beyond the obvious real world publishing laws)

>> No.5167842

I believe that the art styles seen in manga are objectively better than art styles seen in western comics, and for that reason I support you wanting to draw in a manga style.

But you have to recognize the difference in approach, the manga artists are not tryign to draw pretty pictures, they are trying to tell a story/convey emotion/etc.

If you don't have that focus, it will still look like garbage capeshit

>> No.5167847

I don't expect you to agree with all I have said here but I hope I have given you some food for thought

I think a western made comic with the proper influence from manga will indeed sell to normies.. because if they like manga, they will like manga no matter where it's made, so long as it retains that which makes manga good.

But the problem is the physical selling part
Western publishers are so far up their own asses, you could offer them the works of every top manga that has ever been created and they will not publish a single one of them.
You have to seek out lesser known publishers who are not so stuffy.... but normies have never heard of these publishers.
You could try web comics but again.. normies have not heard of these.

If you can't get your story out there, it doesn't matter how good it is, nobody will have read it and it won't make any money

>> No.5167863

There is a lot of dedication in the niche audience of people seeking out interesting new comics in the west.. but these people are few in numbers

You need to attract the attention of children in schools, that is where manga thrives, that is where comics used to thrive.
If you have hundreds of thousands of kids obsessing over a new fad whether it's beyblades, pokemon, a new videogame, a cartoon, a movie series, or a manga.. it will spread like wildfire and be immensely successful.

If you find a way to get children interested in reading comics... and somehow buy those comics, compete with the entertainment value of countless movies, tv shows, videogames.. you will have a comics industry rivalling that of Japan's manga industry

I grew up on Goscinny/Uderzo, Pratt etc, never read american comics until my 20s and I have no idea what a “BD format” is supposed to be. Comics in France are basically American comics published in magazines on a weekly/monthly basis, kinda like the Japanese counterpart. It’s mostly capeshit but not always, it includes comics like the Waking Dead.

Manga is usually anything Japanese, no matter what the format is, but sometimes it also includes French or other Western weebs. In that case, for a French work to be considered as a manga, the general rule is that it has to be black and white, in a typical tankobon fashion. Kinda like some imitation.

Then there is manhua for chinks, manhwa for gooks, but again, with weird guidelines, like it has to be translated from these languages and they have to come from these countries, so apparently a Chinese making a comic in France doesn’t count as a manhua weirdly enough.

And finally, “BD”, is our generic “comic” term so it’s everything else.
