Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Thank you anon. The half-paws were intentional, but I will keep the breast placement more firmly in mind for the future.

>>5154229
Thanks to you too anon. Really I kind of just fell into it after attempting to brute force it for a long time. I spent ages trying to figure out how to paint with little success, but I think the things that helped most were loosening up and changing the way that I thought about painting as a practice.

I started out just trying to think about it as a more complicated form of cel shading, where you use multiple different tones instead of two or three. It turns out that you can actually take that way of thinking pretty far; ultimately all you're doing is blocking out color, then dropping more color on top of that, and then more on top of that, and more on top of that.

The relaxation element comes in when it's time to resist "correcting" things. I'm not sure about you, but when it comes time for me to work with lines, I tend to get a little overzealous in tweaking the directions of things and ensuring everything is in the right place as I progress through the lineart stages. In painting, since you're repeatedly putting things on top of other things, you often kind of just have to let sloppiness exist and form a backing for the colors and shapes you're eventually going to put on top of the mess in order to sharpen it. Painting on top of existing material is extremely important, and if you keep just trying to correct the material beneath instead of moving on and painting on top, you'll end up spinning your wheels on a painting for a long time. You sort of just have to let the mess exist and "come back" to it later by just painting on top.

Hopefully this is semi-helpful anon; after I finally came across these two realizations I really just watched process videos of other people painting and messed with their processes.

duplicate the dense watercolor, put the hardness down to 2, that's your soft round. use the hard and soft round to blend color.

>>5154170
neat, some things I'd note:
- face looks kind of flat, like it lacks side planes? it feels like a mask rather than an actual head that wraps the whole way around.
- drapery is a bit too loose / flat imo, could use more defined, solid outlines and colors
- balance is a bit odd, the way she's tiptoeing + an (unintended?) lean backwards

some (very) subjective anatomy stuff:
- upper arms are too long?
- abs are too large, make them a bit smaller and show more of the obliques
- boobs are pushed too high up and far apart
- could use more definition around the crotch area ;)
it still looks really good on the whole though, keep at it

My drawing from last year. I don't frickin know what or how I just saw ebin art at pixiv and tried to copy it.
I have the fully colored version but I don't really like it so here the grayscale one.

Started really motivated and inspired but at the end I kinda dislike it, probably spent too much time on it. Many flaws as well.

eye spacing needs to be increased marginally (careful with the eye spacing it's better to have too little than too much, but this still is too little)
alternatively you could also horizontally scale the head down.
speaking of the head. there should be a more refined jawline (which should cut down the the wideness of the face visually too)
be careful for a synergistic effect with the jawline and the descaling horizontally of the head.

the composition is fucking boring.
background boring as hell, but to be fair the background isn't done of course. it could also be the colors that creates this really uninteresting look. but I get it, it's not done yet.
try to space out the eyebrows a little more (marginally, most facial feature adjustments are very precise and it's really easy to overdo it).

skintone might be a little weird (this is the importance of having a calibrated monitor, but you shouldn't buy one)

Keep your shoulder straight too. Now, look at your right/left. (fig 2) See your limit here? You'll probably be able to position your chin just right on top of your collarbones.

Now, let your shoulders move with your head. Your body should be twisting like in your picture. (fig 3) Can you see the complete back of your room? no.

>I feel like a lot of artists treat getting over their anime phase as a rite of passage

As someone who used to be deterred by peers not to do anime so much, I think part of it comes from fear of limiting one's influences and lack of practice of fundamentals in favor of copying from screenshots and other people's fanart despite the fact that most in the anime and manga industry tend to have far more discipline than their work suggests. However most fanartists and wannabe anime artists may overlook the training and discipline of the artists that serve as their primary influence and think they can wing stylization.

The fact is there's nothing wrong with drawing anime since most that criticize it have a very limited concept of how flexible the styles can be but I think if the issue is that fanartists and people that want to make the next hit storyline still need basic artist training and I think there's a better way of pushing that than to tell people to drop anime since all that does is suggest anime has no place for things like anatomy or proportions which couldn't be further from the truth.

You can still draw anime and learn other styles at the same time but most importantly, self taught artists still need discipline.

I'm gonna have to disagree with this guide, depending on the anime style the bridge of the nose can be very shallow and deep to a point where there's no ridge covering the eye unless it's close to profile, it's mainly seen in females and children.

Your face is facing forward, why are you showing the nose like that as if it were viewed from the right?
Is her nose crooked? I get some cartoons do that but they don't really tend to be anime.

I'd try adding more variations in hue to your colors, it looks like two main colors, try playing with values and hue, like you did with the background

Is she floating?
I don't understand, the background is horizontal and it makes it looks like she's leaning or falling over.
I'd get if the background is leaning like she was.

I can't tell what your main light source is.
Going by the clouds and foilage the sun is on the left but the light is all over the place on your character.

The eyes are too close, for a front view there should be about an eye's length between the eyes.

I understand you tried to add dynamism but just moving the head won't cut it. There's no contraposto (look at classical greek sculptures to see what I mean) and everything is rigid and stiff.

The way you made her arm move in the back is very jarring, not only because the hand on her hip is very broken, but also because her two elbows are aligned horizontally when they shouldn't be; Since she is moving her arms in the back and upwards, the elbow should follow suite - and be place higher.

The head is misconstructed too. It's not aligned with the cranium's shape, and imo, it would look better if the mouth was more centered and smaller - the way you placed it, it makes her look like she's missing a chin.

I tried redrawing it, I hope it follows the idea you had originally. I think you should absolutely work on your construction and gestures, you're biting more than you can chew at your current level.

I can't draw but maybe the biggest problems are the face of the guy/girl(?) on the left, you should try drawing it using profile view, so you shouldn't draw all the jaw line and show more neck, something like the white haired girl. Also for the right girl, I think you kinda fucked up the collar bone especially her left part.

I recommend looking at Kiyotaka Oshiyama's redline book where he corrects all kind of /beg/ drawings, it might give you a hint.

I was in the searching of the same thing and found that best is standard Japanese method from most serious "how to draw anime" books with sphere and shovel-like piece of plane. This is simplification of Loomis method, also it's usable to do Loomis sphere truncation (which isn't all anime guides does) for easier ears placement. It was in the Houtengeki's book. Also you can use rotation tables from guides if you has difficulties with 3D acceleration in you head.

start by copying the character settei (maybe official artbook), copyrighted illustration just like the one you posted, also started looking at sakugabooru clip and try copy pose or drawing that you find interesting.
https://www.sakugabooru.com/post?tags=sengoku_basara+

By the way the pic you posted was drawn by Yuuga Tokuno (the animator's name is credtied in top left.
https://w.atwiki.jp/sakuga/pages/1844.html
He single handedly draw all the episode 9 of Boku Dake ga Inai Machi, so maybe I'd try looking at that too to see if
https://www.sakugabooru.com/post?tags=yuuga_tokuno+
It doesn't necessarily mean that he has his own style though, animators can draw anime pretty well (duh) because they're flexible and can follow the instruction and design from character designer. The key is copying, and keep drawing.

What type of tablet do you have anon? You may need to adjust your pressure sensitivity if you have to press really hard. Most art programs have some form of line stabilization that you can enable, normally in brush settings.
