quite the interesting comparison between your hard surface renderings and the organic ones. it's like there are two different artists here. you seem to understand volume but your characters are flat. it's very bizarre.

i have all kinds of speculation for why that is. i'm not sure it'd be helpful to share, though.

why not take some of those construction techniques that you have obviously acquired, and use them to render a human? e.g. the head is roughly a sphere with flat sides, legs arms and fingers are cylinders, torso is a bag of potatoes, etc. find better poses and use references.

For anyone wondering about what resources I mainly used last year, here:
(Keep in mind, my overall art skill is low-intermediate, and I had decent anatomy knowledge at the start of the year so these may not be suitable for beginners. Read the sticky, begs)

You can't learn all of anatomy in one day, so it's most efficient when you break down an entire limb into separate groups, the do a group per day. Then you draw the possible ranges of motion of these limbs/bones. Up, out, bent, folded, twisted, etc. Also, if you don't know how to draw a proportional skeleton in perspective, focus on doing that first before muscles and fat, because it is quite literally the foundation of figures. Simplified skeletal maquettes like M. Hampton's work fine. Then pose simplified blocky versions of a humanoid. Don't even worry about making it look human, what matters is training your ability to draw with form.
In the end, you don't HAVE to learn anatomy to a high degree. A lot of pros don't and just make do with ref, which is perfectly fine. I'm just one of those autists that needs to know. Honestly, if you work smart enough you could probably achieve my progress in a month or two. Hope there was something useful for you in there, I'm out.

The left/old one is so interesting and a refreshing style to come across now. Good composition, you make nice use of sharp contrasts, I really enjoy it. There's a lot of drama and movement with so little. It's good on it's own and shows your potential.

The "progress" feels stiff and like symbol drawing, by which the figure doesn't feel unified and your color layout feels more muddy and pillow shaded compared to your older work. I think if you applied the dynamics of what made your old piece good with that pose, the new one could be much more striking.

Sometimes people make progress and leave behind too much of what was working. Please try to avoid that. I have no idea who you are, but I want you to succeed in your goals.
