I'm quitting my post as an artist, I can't stand digital art and the art world has become too saturated with it.

People are a little 'too good' now??, like wtf? a few years ago all of a sudden the world had 20% more artists online and somehow everyone had high skills, i don't get it, not sure if anyone has noticed this. Constantly on reddit these grand pieces where it looks like the artist hasn't had to spend years learning, but the work is there.
I don't get that and probably never will.

I think the issue is that you're only seeing the "best" posted, which is a problem with social media in general. These people are only showing their best work, which makes you feel kind of shitty, I guess. Maybe get off Reddit and social media for a bit?
I think your art is charming and has a unique sense to it. Is it a perfect copy of a person? No, but it reminds me of those 90s comics like Hellboy and Love and Rockets, which were pretty great

Thanks for the constructive reply - best they have done maybe, but from most POV razter/vector art, procreate and photo paint overs are becoming the primary posts and popular stuff - so looks like even the most fundamental things to learn in art like perspective and form can be circumvented. Things that used to take years to master in free form can be done by computer, so there are experts all around.

Thanks for the comment on mine, I like mostly comic artists so probably why my style is that way.

which part of reddit? i just signed up for reddit , i searched for art subreddits, it's all normie art shit. The highest upvotes are meme arts or political arts. Hongkong rallies, the current wsb meme, girl pointing at cat meme, baby yoda, just a drawing copy of a cute doggo, edgy among us art, le epic gamer humor comics. I mean if you looked at those and get discouraged, have you been to ig, artstation, twitter? a place where good art is actually posted? and not just normie bait?
but fr anyone know a good art place in reddit? im looking for an alternatjve to /ic/ since the board is pretty slow, and It feels like I already interacted with everybody

i've made a similar observation in the past
we have unprecedented access to learning materials and cheap electronics
and social media gives people motivation to share because of things like patreon or getting recruited by the establishment
when i was a kid, if they were going to cast a nobody in a film, they'd set up an audition place in a big city and people would travel from all over to try for the part
these days they set up a website with a form and you send them a link to your youtube channel
so you also have to take into account the amount of talented people who have always been there, but no platform other than what the establishment allowed us to see
so it seemed like talented people were the ones who made it big, and if you weren't famous, then you weren't talented. they were mutually exclusive
people are consuming more media, and so to keep up with that demand, sometimes people who would have been 10th place in a real competition, get their 15 minutes of fame
all of these things combined make it appear that everyone suddenly became an expert
in reality we're being exposed to a lot of lower rate stuff
stuff that would have never made the cut years ago (assuming the establishment had perfect taste and perfect recruiting -- which they didn't)
but in theory, more competition means higher quality things
nowadays, there is no competition for the means of distribution (the establishment -- televisions and movie theaters and large venues)
now the people "own" the means of distribution via social media, and all you have to do is create an account
it's discouraging at first, i know
but it also means that YOU -- with enough discipline and hard work -- could get your 15 minutes of fame, or even longer
isn't that actually *encouraging*?
and besides, with or without success, don't you want to see what art you will create over your lifetime and how it will evolve?

There’s a lot of really bad art on IG. Not just talking about technical skill either I also mean just incredibly corny symbolism and acid casualty stoner shit.

hi op, i felt similarly in a sense where it seems like 14 year olds these days can blow adults who had been in the game for years out of the water.

people have gotten technically very good, but i noticed that artists aren't exactly bringing interesting visions to the paper. like for example, i'll see a lot of artists who have this realistic style, but they only draw busts of pretty girls in some nice lighting and colors and it's extremely repetitive. i can probably find hundreds of artists who draw and paint similar subjects and styles like this and mistake them for another.

on the other hand, this makes art with interesting ideas, concepts and worlds stand out a lot more. ie: webcomic artists for example. shit art typically, but their story is interesting. i follow a few webcomics even if their drawing is shit because i like the premise.

maybe focus on making things interesting either in design, theme, etc. write a story and make the world that goes with it. someone like me will take notice and find it interesting. personally these days, i've been looking into horror and surrealism that genuinely makes me skin crawl for inspiration besides pretty art. i want to evoke a similar sense of dread in my work while also creating a world that feels interesting to explore and what kind of characters you would run into.

tl;dr, make a passion project and make art for yourself instead of others. someone will notice the passion and you'll still have fun making art without worrying so much about the competition because you have something YOU uniquely crafted.

Let me tell you the blackpill, art was always about talent or picking up art as a kid. But for those who actually want to live up to their dream they have to keep fighting and grinding each day, and to be honest i couldn't care less if it took me ages to get better. For all i know losers like you are gonna keep quitting

what the fuck is wrong with you? Do you go on Instagram and think everyone drives flashy cars and eats out 3 times a day on a McWage? They’re in crippling debt, they sporadically post their holiday photos throughout the year to look interesting. As for artists they cap themselves doing retarded normie shit. Pretty girl portrait 10000. Photobashing, AI, tracing 3D. Anime anime anime booba. If you want to do that stuff it’s the easiest shit you can pursue in art because you’re certain of exactly what your goal is. If you can’t figure it out you’re ngmi anyway

Anyone can draw with the tools in 2d software. There are 3d models that people can trace over, photobashing, easy access to references, and color palettes for those who can't seem to get colors right. Some people skip fundies and get back to it when they want to be actual artists, but for the most part, most never touch fundies. It's just an easy way to earn money.

I do traditional. You have tools to make drawing easier as well (proportional dividers, pantographs, lightboxes, projectors). Colors are another thing entirely tho.

Art has been entirely about compliance with the system since the industrial revolution. Artists get pushed exactly when they need to be if they're saying the right things at a given moment. Since then it's been a top-down propaganda thing. Even now it's running entirely on the public's own farts. It says "I will do whatever you ask of me", because vices are the only thing that people are in control of right now. People know they are not in control of the ruling class, they are not in control of their goals, or their identity, or their future, so art cannot be about that. But people can pick whatever drug to get hooked on, gambling, porn, as long as it moves money you have freedom, and this is the purpose of art now, not just satisfying this market but also enforcing this idea that at the end of the day you are in control of your free time.
My mistake was thinking that popular art would have had a cultural purpose and had some kind of transformative property, but the truth is that it always followed after what was already established and happening. The more I think about it the more I realize it never got quite there as literature managed to, and all my ideas rested on literally one exception that would likely never have existed today, not even as an exception.
In the end, I know that I am worthless without art. I am probably arrogant but I don't want to be just a number, I wanted to matter in some way. Art is the only one thing of real worth I felt like I had within me. This worth with always be entirely in my own perception, and it is in direct conflict with what is needed of art right now. Art or not I am entirely worthless.
