Your line weight is way too uniform. You could at least change the size of the brush if you aren't using pen pressure. Details inside the body should not have the same weight as outlines, and your intersections should start heavy and then taper off depending on the spatial relationship of the forms. Lines with equal weight at an intersection describe a flat shape. Something like the collar bone should be relatively subtle in contrast to something like the bottom of the tit hanging in front of the torso. The artist in your tutorial is doing this stuff but I think you aren't noticing it.

And I'm telling you right now, you're wasting time and accomplishing nothing. Your underlying forms and anatomy aren't sound to begin with and you're not learning anything by caring about all this "clean sketch" stuff. Your lines are too thin to even matter, too uniform and flat to be interesting, and too monotonous and unsupporting to create the appearance of form, weight, and value.

Use your lines to define things, not just as a clean edge for your flat colors. And spend more time on learning anatomy and construction.

The jaw has gotten weirdly pointy, her shoulder is a wobbly line with no structure, the bangs are poorly designed, just too many random uniform spike shapes that don't really describe the form of the hair. I don't think so. The picture you posted shows me you can vaguely copy the outline of a picture and then fill in rough approximations of the shadows the original artist used, but it misses all sense of construction, proportion, and anatomy completely. You're not building anything, you're putting scratchy marks where they kinda-sorta appear on the reference photo. That's not practice, practice implies you're building and reinforcing good habits which you are not.

You'd learn infinitely more if you actually attempted to build the same proportions, forms, and values in the reference photo in a way that forces you to make conscious choices about every detail. Why are the proportions how they are? Why are the folds in the clothing this way? How does one shape cause the shape next to it?

Right now, I don't see any conscious, intentional decisions in your work, because I don't think you're making any. Which means you aren't practicing anything.

Uniformity. It's part of why a lot of traced art looks terrible. Lines are descriptive and how you draw them tells the viewer how to interpret the space in the drawing. If your lines don't say anything relative to one another, they all say the same thing: flat.

Just find someone who does really dynamic lines and study the way they draw the lines and you'll understand.

Linework is used to convey weight, depth, pressure, form, etc. There's a reason no one worth their salt just takes a .03 micron pen and traces over a drawing with a single, uniform line and then calls it good, because the line isn't conveying anything. It's not telling you anything about the forms it's defining, it's not adding anything to the picture.

Every line should tell you something about the picture, and the way you do that is line weight. Things need variation to be "interesting", that's what the term means in art. "Visual interest" means that there is different contrasting things, whether they be colors or values or textures or forms or shapes, for your eye to move between. When dealing with lineart, visual interest comes from levels of contrast. A single, straight line is not visually interesting. A line with different thickness across it's length is visually interesting.

That's what it means.

Notice how the thickness of the line tells you immediately about what it's defining. Soft, fine details get thin tapered lines that tell you how fragile or soft the form is. Thick, bold lines frame solid, strong forms. Imagine if this piece was just completely uniform thin, flat lines. Would it convey the same information? Would you be able to feel the forms in the same way?

Pedantic, excuse-making idiots get hung up on "style", and say like "Well I don't draw comic books so that's not my style", but they don't understand the underlying point. Lines are only useful if they're being made use of. If you're using flat, mono-thickness lines through your whole piece, then your lines aren't accomplishing anything and they might as well not be there at all because they add no substance. Even anime artists understand the principals of line weight and using it to define forms, even if they generally do it in much more subtle ways.

A study is just that, it's an attempt to learn something. There's no one thing that makes a "study", and how you approach it depends on what you hope to learn or practice. If you're working on anatomy, form, and construction, a study might be the process of taking reference photos and trying to break them down and understand them with shapes and planes. If you're trying to learn value, light, and shape, a study might be taking a single shape or set of forms and attempting to render them in different lighting conditions with different shadows. If you're trying to learn color, light, and value, a study might be taking a photo reference and attempting to reproduce it by picking your own colors by eye and trying to match the real thing.

The point is you have to be actually attempting to learn something.

You're doing a lot of symbol-drawing, and not a lot of understanding the forms. You aren't making a distinction between line and value, meaning you're using lines as hard terminators on forms, but trying to use value elsewhere. There's no underlying construction, which means you're not recreating, you're just drawing what you think you see and making it up along the way. Also, you're not even close on your values in the areas where you made a an attempt.

Stop trying to draw what something is, and focus on drawing what you see. Those will always be two very different things. And if you're going to do faces, you absolutely need to get your construction right or it's always going to be a failure.

>> No.5153393

>>5153386
Not a bad effort. I can make out distinct planes delineated with value, and you didn't skip over the details like ambient bounce lighting in the shadows. I think you could bear to use a wider value range to capture more of the nuances in color, and I would pay more attention to the hard terminators in some of the shadows, some of them don't have the fullness of value they need but overall it's a good study.

>What does that mean?
Humans are wired to make simplified models of things in our brain, it's how we are able to process information. We very rarely ever remember things accurately and with detail, but rather we create very simple representations of them that convey the information efficiently. This is why you're able to recognize a face even if it's just two dots and a line. This is really good for storing lots of information and recalling it quickly.

When it comes to art, this is actually a huge detriment and a hurdle we have to overcome. We call the result "symbol drawing" because our brain naturally wants to take an image we can see and replace it with a fake model we have stored in our memory as a shortcut. So if you want to draw an eye, your brain already has a picture of an eye stored and it's going to conjure it up and push it out through your pen and you'll look at it and say "Yep, that's an eye." because you're just drawing what the thing IS. What you're not doing is drawing what you ACTUALLY SEE in front of you.

You need to short-circuit or get around that part of your brain, You need to not draw what the thing "is", but rather exactly what you see in front of you. You're not drawing an eye, you're drawing a series of shapes, lines and values, that when reproduced accurately will look like an eye. This is why we do exercises like turning a reference photo upside down and drawing it that way, because it's one method of short-circuiting that part of the brain that identifies objects, so we can instead just focus on exactly what we see in front of us and nothing else.

Your values are too blown out (your lights are too light, darks are too dark), plus you are painting them with no background value so the values you are putting down for the apples will look different against the white background, even if they are the right values. ALWAYS slap down your background value first. Values are relative to each other.

You also kind of zeroed in on details too soon. Work on blocking in planes and shadow shapes very simply first, and then blending and working towards details afterwards.

For a beginner I would also recommend working with a black and white photo when you're doing a value study. If your reference picture isnt black and white, learn to change it in the program you're using.

1.) how did they transport the drink without spilling (if i could see a gas station or restaurant in the background, it would tell me the story). i've never driven a motorcycle but i didn't think they had cupholders.

2.) you wouldn't grasp it that way and I don't think the fingers would be long enough to wrap around

3.) even if it is a 44 oz. ounce, it still looks too large. it's almost the size of their head. i've got a 44 oz. styrofoam cup in the kitchen and it could be the height of a human head, but doesn't come near the width.

I don't have a tutorial, but I can try to explain. Pic related.

The workflow for a hard round brush is roughly the following:

Identify two colors you want to blend
Set your brush to half opacity
Pick one of the colors with the color picker
Make a stroke where the colors meet
You now have an average of the two colors (it creates two new colors)
Reduce the size of your brush
Pick the new colors you've created
Make a stroke where the old colors meet this new color, creating several new borders in the process
Repeat as often as necessary

Basically you're building a gradient with opacity rather than smudging

I made a picture for you. The first step is the two colors. The second is what happens with the 50% opacity brush. The third image is the 50% opacity brush that is 1/2 the size of the first brush. And the fourth image is the rest of the owl where I've done about a dozen iterations on it.

>> No.5154017

>>5153035
Work on line quality. The Chin is too sharp.
Switch on pen pressure for opacity.
switch on smoothing 5% to 20% test which is more suitable for you.
You can do it.

Forcing myself to do some timed (loosely at least) studies of male torsos since I've been slacking in that department and been focusing more on ladies. It's been pretty hard, but it helps when I remind myself not to copy contours and rely more on things I've learned from other artists.

>>5153988
This looks really good, anon. I don't think I'm good enough to suggest anything other than whatever I can regurgitate from what I've heard. Maybe the trees are too evenly shaped and spaced together? I kind of like that look though, makes it a bit creepy.

>>5153871
I haven't studied Nicolaides so I can't say how his method should look like, but I suppose the first step is making some sense of those gestures by adding some basic construction method on top or just going straight to adding anatomical meat on it. I find that once you start drawing anatomy on top you begin to lose the initial gesture over time, so it's good to learn how to let the gesture "pop through" once you add all the bones, skin, and muscles.
...Not that I can do that well of course, but it's something I've been trying to study.
>>5153946
>So what fundies should I be focusing on? I forgot
Whatever you find weak and want to improve on. That's how I pick and choose my studies for the day/week. Gesture, proportion, and appealing shapes seem super important for figure drawing I'd say. Anatomy too, of course. I think it's a mistake not to begin studying anatomy early so long as you don't go too overboard with it.
