Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I studied from that youtube mangaka (akihito https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeySBnV71dyC-gwqapq9NwQ/videos)) but his methods for the waist/hips were way too simplistic in the end. He’s praised a lot but looking at his manga you realize he’s not a master at all.

Any idea on what/who to study for more construction inspiration please? I’d really appreciate it.

90% of accomplished manga-ka have learned by sheer force of will slaving their early life away being assistants of another big dick manga-ka that would make them complete their shitty drafts with interpretrations mixed with an absurd amount of ass whopping

Toriyama was infamous for making his assistants draw up to 100 figures PER DAY, because there is no other way to get good than to keep fucking drawing until your fingers have callouses so big you will pop them for fun, don't bitch you can't draw until your doodles don't make you bleed, only then you can bitch.

Are there resources on how they made anime in the 80s/90s? I mean from a technical point, what paper they used, pens, painting techniques for fore/background, how they were able to color characters so smoothly, etc.

I know the use of cels (some form of plastic?) for characters, then how did they smoothly color them? How does drawing on cels differ from paper?

I've heard that they used watercolor for backgrounds, so what kind of brushes and paint brands (or whatever) or canvas can you use to emulate that? And what about other techniques like gouache or whatever?

Even better if there are resources for dbz and related animes from the past.

what other anon said. soft cutesy things are generally more rounded; big eyes/chibi alone won't necessarily do it.
look at panty and stocking -- the style is cute, depending on taste, and generally pretty chibi/super-deformed, but not 'soft', because all the shapes are in hard-edged blocks and such.

it's like "educational" junk food or entertainment, the people who collect "how to draw" tutorial images or watch hours of art streams/tutorials thinking they're learning something. the illustrations are incredibly poorly drawn for indicating structure and learning from: a lot of soft, curvy lines that lack structure and have a lot of erasing/scratchiness to them. if you drew from an actual anatomy book in your language you'd learn a lot more and the names of muscles the anatomy so you know what to look up reference for.

Not much of a cunny fan but I feel like your construction method isn't being used as it should. In your box example, you're twisting her in a completely different angle. Either that Or the guidelines you're putting down are just wrong.

Box construction requires actually being able to draw boxes, which admittedly doesn't seem to be your forte yet. Your doodle on the right, while having better and easier to use shapes, have a bit of proportion issues-- the torso is way to short.

For the sketch itself, the legs are fantastic looking, but the way she's twisting and the angles just don't make much sense. Her left arm looks like it disappeared, and there's no way she's using her hand as support when she looks more like she's slipping on it. The neck is way too long from where it should be (the middle of the shoulders) and makes everything look dislocated.

I redrew your faces a bit. I've seen a lot of your work in the past, and it seems you're still missing a bit of the 3D aspect anime faces have.

I also changed the pose a bit to make it a bit more dynamic, but kept the legs intact. It isn't much of a redline, but I hope you get my points better. I don't know if my handwriting is readable though.

>>5150444
just use the anime guides or tuts, it doesn't matter, you don't need loomis's steps and head construction with cheekbones, etc., for anime faces because a lot of it is simplified.
exception could be if you're aiming to draw in a style with more nose or defined features; learning a detailed construction method that makes it easier to draw cheekbones and features will work better if you want to draw more detailed faces, naturally.
want mugi? moe anime construction works. want askeladd? probably try loomis.

more imaginative camera angle, better composition. it's very flat because there's hardly any overlap, so no illusion of depth. all the detail is in the top half of the image, the rope work is practically all in one place. you could cut the image off at her pelvis and have practically the same image. the colors are really dead and the pattern is horrible at any "non-even" multiple of size because of the moireing effects. nitpicks are the facial expression is boring, the eyes and brows could be emoting more. the glasses look upside down. i was going to say it looks like a shitty deviantart tier anime image, but in fact, deviant art has better work https://www.deviantart.com/tag/shibari

it's a bad figure drawing in general, you/they spent too much time copying an aesthetic and post processing that doesn't matter instead of actually learning fundies. so it looks like those shitty latino artists that copy retro anime styles or dragonball instead of learning to draw.

Thank you so much,
I think i drew the boxes wrong like you said and I didn't quite explain it to you well, I wanted her to be twisting a lot, see pic, her pelvis is leading away from the camera but the torso turns and it goes to the side.
Hopefully this is a better example than before and what I wanted to achieve. Basically the pelvis box is more oblique the torso box is more facing the camera with the top and bottom planes being invisible due to perspective. I didn't mean for them to be more inline like your fix, I wanted some twisting.
Is this a bad idea?
Can i still do this?

Also the shoulders are actually covered up by ponytail so that's why it looked weird, it would be more noticeable if i colored it. Also yeah i really could've done the arms better, to be honest i wasn't sure what to do with them

If you're gonna draw top down construction to figure out perspective, I find it helps to draw 'perspective' lines from the viewing point to figure out the proportions of how much of each thing you see. Drawing construction lines but then not actually using them to maintain consistency is such a common mistep, I posted this a couple of threads ago but i think it could help here.

Use the construction lines as a quick and dirty illusion of form, use them to maintain believable perspective, then build the planes of the face apon them.

I think it'd be benificial to to use a smaller brush width aswell.

People don't believe it because they're seeing gains and drawing well without asian jeans and / or they know from experience or from testimony that the way people get good is through a proper work and / or study mindset, which is something that is drilled into a lot of asian youth (and minority / immigrant youth more widely) from a young age. These people aren't just drawing for an hour a week and goofing off and getting good that way. They're studying carefully and drawing as much as they can.

This kind of weird faux-scientific determinist mindset won't get you anywhere. You'll end up blaming your issues in art on some weird intrinsic inability to be good rather than a bad mindset, inept teaching / theory, lack of time invested, or any of the *other* things that *actually* cause you to be bad.

How do you expect to get good at art when you're blaming the reason why you're bad on something that doesn't even matter? It's like someone deciding that they'll never be good at singing because they walk with a limp. It's silly, irrelevant, and wastes your time. Go to /mmg/ and ask the people there to post their work. There's lots of great artists in that thread that don't have asian jeans helping them out.

>I'm bitter because despite putting a lot of time and work I'm still crap. I hate myself for not being able to do good artwork despite putting all my effort into it.

This is your first problem. If you want to get out of this, consider taking a guilt-free approach to art. I've seen a lot of people get into drawing because they want to be "the best" or something similar, and they always, without fail, burn out and either quit drawing altogether or transition to a far healthier mindset before getting back into it. You can save yourself a lot of time by taking complete ownership of your work and time-utilization--both the good parts and the bad.

I was like this when I first started out, and the one thing that helped me more than anything else was owning my time and deciding that if I really didn't want to draw, then I wouldn't, and if I really did want to draw, then I would. If I felt like drawing when friends were going out, I'd stay in and draw. If I should have drawn but felt like playing videogames, I'd go "screw it" and play videogames. It turned art into something other than a chore or a "necessity," and though I wasn't going all-in all the time (which is another meme, you don't need to do this either), it helped me really "own" my ability to art and exercise it when I wanted to.

From there, you can change your mindset to focus on the act of drawing and make it into a pleasurable activity that you will *want* to do rather than feel like you *have* to do. Your initial art will be bad, and it will be bad for a long time.

It's also worth noting that people have different life circumstances. Comparing your progress to someone else only works if you two live in the same place, have the same access to instruction, and have the same amount of hours in the day to draw. For all you know, you're comparing yourself to someone with rich parents that pay for good teachers and give them all the time in the world to just draw and do nothing else.

>> No.5151707

>>5151692
>>5151702
All this is to say, focus on *your* art within the context of *your* life and *your* time. Who cares about someone else taking a year to get better while you take five? Do you want *their* art, or do you want art that *you* like and that *you* think looks good? Not everyone has to be a wunderkind, and the vast majority of people aren't going to care about how young you are or how long it took for you to get good. They're just going to care about whether or not your art resonates with them in some way.

Don't let popularity or time invested by others or even "skill" get in the way of the art you want to make. In the end, none of these things even matter. Good art can come from anyone. Good art can come from (You).

>> No.5151717

The time I can allocate to art is extremely limited and my progress is extremely small, my time is running out and with my current progress I'm gonna be dead before I can even manage to achieve art that I can like within my lifetime. Then that's the hand you were dealt anon, it isn't anything to be ashamed of. The real question is if you know this is the case, why are you comparing yourself to people who are neets or in school and can dedicate half their day to drawing?

Your real start, if you want life circumstances more amenable to drawing, would be finding some ways to loosen up your schedule, if you're serious about making art. Find another job with better hours if you can, or one that lets you sit and draw on the job. Cut back on other activities. Whatever your life allows. Or, just make the most of the time you have.

Same here but I don't wanna give up even if it makes me depressed. I have this stupid faith that if I keep trying I'll get good eventually despite all signs pointing me to the contrary and getting reminded every single day I'm trash.
