IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH!

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

Sticky document:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

Sketches are supposed to be rough anon. Line quality comes from practice. Just go through a finishing process for the lines.

This sketch looks real good. It isn't the best, you didn't really capture what's going on with the neck, but it looks good, it reads as a handsome face. Well done.

Here's what you do:
>Any layers you used to make this sketch, merge into 1.
>Turn down the opacity on your merged sketch layer in photoshop. I find 25-35% is good.
>Make a new layer on top of the sketch layer.
>Trace over your sketch while attempting to connect your lines that are unfinished. Be as clean as you can, now you that you have your sketch as a guide, it should be easier.

Keep doing this with your drawings, and with enough practice you'll get cleaner. The thing is, if you know how to paint over the sketch, I'm sure you already know this process. You just have to get off your ass and do it, anon. Put in that work.

So maybe what you really want to know is why do cleans lines matter? All I can say that is you'd be a better more versatile artist if you practice clean line illustration and painting. Why would you ever want to be less versatile? Why would you ever want to be less good than you could be?

Draw a box is based off of dynamic sketching by Peter Han, you're basically getting an inferior copy of that course. There are of course helpful things in it, the draftsmanship exercises will help you if you don't have line confidence for example. If I were you I'd look into Han's original course, I feel it's much more comprehensive. If you wanna go with draw a box, you're free to do so, but just don't get stuck in an infinite loop of drawing boxes like so many people do.

/ic/ cant think for you. I genuinely think a lot of people here fall into the trap of expecting, or even needing, /ic/ to do all their learning, maybe even you more so then others. I don't think talent exists. I think success is dependent on your ability to think for yourself which sadly is dependent on how smart you are but it's not a particularly high bar to clear.

/ic/ is good for many things but the one thing it's not is a simple step by step tutorial with tricks to skip right to being a professional artist. If you want progress you need to figure that shit out for yourself but if it helps this is what i'd do. Set your goals. Make your best plan to reach those goals with all your current understanding and resources at your disposal. Execute your plan and amend according to new knowledge gained. Rinse Repeat for all new goals.

Pic is my early beginner gains, nothing impressive but a vast and sudden improvement following a change in mindset. Stop sperging and get more critical with yourself, let your brain stay on instead of shutting it off with incoherent baby rage.

Give us more information about what are you trying to create or how is the fiction piece that character is supposed to be immersed in.

The shading style should fit the style of the fiction piece, in a way that helps to convey the kind of "atmosphere" the author intended for it.
E.g. Some shading styles are better fit for edgy fiction pieces while others are better for more "light-hearted" fiction if that makes sense.

I'm beg too, nonetheless I hope you can get some use of it:
Try to see simple geometric shapes, straight lines, spheres, cubes, and put it into perspective.
Try to find symmetries you can apply in perspective. Don't worry about staying true to the reference, noone will spot mistakes with such animals people rarely see, just focus on construction.
Once there, the fun, relaxing part begins with texture, details and varying line thickness. Thicker lines for objects in the front and to seperate major shapes.

Fun with a pencil is mostly a meme. Loomis is right and his method makes a lot of sense but he's shit at explaining it, that book is for the kind of people who draw all the time and can figure it out on their own from what he tells them.
One chapter you're doing cartoons while he tells you to just have fun, the next you get hit with realistic face construction methods and have to figure out this is the exact same thing, and at this point you should just read his other books who explain it more in depth.

Read a few chapters, do the blooks, and go practice with Hampton, it's basically the same thing with pretty colors and more steps so you won't fuck up so bad if you're an absolute /beg/.

I'd shill the big /ic/ mega but apparently they took it down, here's my own stash if you want some free PDFs instead of paying 40$ for each book, or at least check what's in them before : https://mega.nz/folder/BpgDXaLK#Ti5MwgtW5_pOVUwogQZnpw..

Maybe they uploaded it somewhere else but I'm going to sleep, try asking around, they had way better stuff than I do

What's the benefit of buying and having the physical copy of an art book, rather than just having it as a PDF? I can download most books for free but money isn't really the issue, I just wonder if having some of the actual books will make me learn faster as dumb as it sounds in hindsight.

It might make you care more about it. There is meaning on it not having any real meaning. Just like I can play Yu-Gi-Oh! online but I cherish buying the cards and collecting them in a box and playing with them all alone in my room instead of having fancy online duels, or how I have a few hundred downloaded videogames BUT I care more about playing the ones I physically bought.

Without love it cannot be seen.

Was huffing paint while pregnant a huge fad 15 years ago? Because I swear every single zoomer on this board is a raging schizo.

Picrel: Freehand perspective/construction exercise. I'm having trouble projecting 2D shapes onto 3D planes (like the circles on the sides of some of the cubes) and also problems with form. Any feedback is welcome.

This is the firs guy who said it. The scratch ones of your lines and complete lack of understanding of line weight or remotely cleaned up lines doesn’t align with where your construction skills are. If your drawing skills were the same as your line work the drawing should be much much worse which leads me to question whether it’s traced from somewhere

Genuine question.
Why should I construct a face when I can just use my own as a reference?

Loomis doesn't bring up gesture because his book was released before gesture became mainstream thanks to Nicholades. The mannequin IS still gesture related, it's just more emphasis on construction.

Construction is not an end in itself, it's a way for you to better understand your references.

It's only bad when it happens because you're not sure which line is better, like in his shoulder. The hair has more of a "gesture" feel, so it's good

The cube is too soft, the sphere lacks a core shadow. Cylinder is just good, keep it up anon!
