He saw etchings and thought it was done in pen and ink. So he learned to do pen and ink drawings in the style of etchings. It just takes practice and you start to get the ideas pretty easily. I recommend tearing through some sheets of printer paper and ballpoint pens to get a feel for using the line/tone density.

It's pen and ink developed from studying etchings. In the pic you mentioned the lines aren't entirely consistent and unbroken from end to end, there are plenty of clear breaks where he stopped and began again or left small white gaps.

I think you mean dip pen...But ya I have Frazettas book of ink works and his lines are amazing as well. Alphonso Dunn on youtube has lots of videos about it. When you look at pros do it, they make it looks so easy, but when you try doing it, you realize how fucking hard it is.

No, I meant ballpoint. It's a low risk way to practice and if you can make shit look good in ballpoint, you can make it look good with a dip pen. Using pen and ink is a distraction from learning the concept of the technique. Ballpoint allows for more free experimentation that easily transfers to the pen and ink method.
