Happy new year

>> No.5106896

Alright, total beginner who's probably worrying too much, but I want to ask this anyway.

I've tried to learn several times before but got frustrated and gave up. Then I read the /asg/ screencap (https://imgur.com/zNDsyF0)) and decided to try it again.

I downloaded the whole IC-TORRENT and have decided to start with the fundamentals, since the screencap says that those will help, but that it's mostly about copying anime. Should I bother with anything else besides what's in the Fundies folder? I don't give a shit about being able to draw anything but manga.

You have basically 3 major problems:
1) you use line weight randomly
2) you don't use tools available to you to show the form properly (overlaps, going across the form)
3) just overall lack of detail

What I did here, is I just went over your sketch with a messy outline removing completely all line weight and replacing it just with lines showing thickness. This is obviously too quick and messy to use as an actual lineart, it's just to illustrate a point. I also tried to use lines to show form better by going across the form in several places, and trying to emphasize overlaps, particularly with folds. Folds on your image are just random, not good. Folds should generally wrap the form together with the fabric, not be straight.
About the line weight: you use it in this image to show thickness, but that is incorrect. Line weight is a composition tool and should be used as such to highlight focal point. Thick lines in your image do not create a coherent composition, this is why this shit doesn't work.
If you want to improve your inking, you should do what other anons are telling you and start to incorporate shading. This will help you understand how and where to put your line weight, also, will help you get a better grasp on form.

More than anything you want to look for shapes and angles that help you get a resemblance. Also try to problem solve as you go, your first go will never be perfect.

Does this look flat to you? When you're drawing through form and have decent anatomy and perspective, it doesn't look flat. You did it for these parts, do the same for the rest of the figure. Use a reference like a mirror or 3d model, if you can get the angle on the other leg and hands right.

Believe it or not, 4 month is not that long in terms of art. This shit takes a ton of time, you sometimes may go for a year without visible improvement. Good news is, there are also periods of explosive growth, were you improve very rapidly. Obviously, it partly depends on how you practice, but only partly. Think of it as learning a hard video game. Sometimes you get stuck at a difficult part for a long ass time, but if you keep at it, you will get past it eventually.

Anon, I'm sorry to say, but shading or ears is not the problem here. Pic related. I color coded it so that it is more clear. Basically, there are certain angles between features that the human brain is trained to understand. In your picture angle of the head tells us that the head is looking straight, while angle of all the features (eyes, nose, lips, chin) tells us that the head is looking up. This is a major mistake and you should work on correcting it asap. I advise you to focus heavily on drawing instead of shading and coloring in the future. Remember that learning to shade and color is much easier and faster than learning how to draw. Do the hard thing first. Also, you would greatly benefit from learning fundamentals of art, such as perspective, proportions, anatomy, etc.

Hey /ic/. Utterly new at this; drawing a figure drawing a day to improve, been going at it for 3 weeks, learning to figure draw from life references. I feel something's "off" with my initial structure sketches. I feel like the structure is there as I can make bodies out of simple shapes but I can't feel the gesture in what I draw, so things come out a bit zombie-ish or frankensteinish. They're lacking the "beauty" I see in other figure drawings that later gets translated into a finished thing. I think I might not be curving the limbs enough. Any idea what I should be looking at to improve? Pic attached is what I drew today and the reference used.

>and start getting used to 30-60 second figures.

Disregard this retard. 30-60s drawings aren't for /beg/s. Go simpler, look at the pose, and fix your mistakes.

-------

Your drawing is fine for a beginner. Yes, it's off. Everything will be off when you first start. No, it's not about the limbs not curving enough, not yet anyway. Translation, ie. what drawing is, isn't the issue here yet. It's much simpler than that.

You need to begin by being able to check your proportions of things, regardless of anatomical knowledge, and fix it. I want you to take a measurement of some of his body part and compare it, vertically and horizontally, to other parts. I also want you to check where things are, horizontally and vertically, compared to other parts.

Example: the vertical line of the back of his head, extended all the way down, intersects with the back of his hand (knuckles), as well as the line of his back to the ribcage area where his elbow is, and extends all the way down to the leg that's carrying his weight. His leg carrying weight sits slightly lower in the photo compared to his other leg (due to perspective).

Do you see it? This is where you need to begin. Introduce gesture, sweeping curves and other translation devices on top of seeing these big proportional relationships. Later on you can exaggerate the pose for your own benefits (see the book Force by Mike Mattesi for this - but it's an advanced topic).

Double check your head, hands, shoes/feet at times, because they tend to be for most people either too small (almost always) or too large.

Attached a pic that shows what I'm talking about.

I would urge you to avoid explicitly drawing these lines out, and instead train your eyes to see these things. You can always double-check afterwards and make mental notes for yourself of what you did wrong, and try to account for them in a subsequent drawing you do.

Avoid most of the book recommendations here for the time being. Get your eyes used to observing proportions and angles first, the rest will follow.

Is it a good idea to try to simply memorize how to draw these copies?
My thinking is if I for example copy enough drawing of legs and memorize all of them to the point where I can replicate them without having to look at the reference then I'll have a much easier time doing it completely from imagination as I will have similar positions memorized in my head. You use a large enough proportion that allows you to do it easily without sacrificing accuracy too much.

The renaissance/traditional method is to measure things in heads, both height wise and width wise. But this is too small of a unit early on when you just want to put something on the page. Usually I settle on a third or fourth of the total, like say using height from foot to knee, and in some cases this ends up being divisible into a head size as well so it works out anyway. One other tip is to look for squares or near-squares. These are mindfucks in perspective drawings.

It’s very good you’re actively engaging your eyes and your mind this way. You can, in earnest, learn just about every fundamental from real life drawing. I’m unsure if this is faster than book learning because this is how I approached it and, by the end, found bookish approaches too simplistic because they approach drawing from too analytical of point of view and neglect your presence in what you see in front of you. Vilppu is an exception, and a rare one, but his book needs a teacher to point out mistakes.

Anyway, you have enough from /beg/ to last you for some time. Draw everything that inspires you, loli, coom, Renaissance or sci fi. Once you feel comfortable doing contour drawings, go into shading with aim to be as accurate to the tones that you see.

A.) Draw bigger
B.) You shouldn't be erasing sketches that much.

Ctrl+Z is a crutch that will actually make you learn at a slower pace than if you just learn to accept your mistakes. Begs put too much weight on making finished drawings or trying to correct a single drawing too much. That's time wasted polishing a turd when you're still learning, and what beginners need most is mileage. That means not spending hours on a single drawing, but spending hours instead doing 100 gesture drawings in pencil and not erasing.

You may enjoy getting a red pencil for traditional on white paper, I found that it makes things pop more and looks nicer for sketching.

>You will memorize common silhouettes and shapes, but that won't help you understand the form.
How the fuck can it not help me understand the form?
>Analyse the form
I have to understand the form to analyse it.
i have to analyse it to understand.
>fix mistakes
How would I even see them without a teacher?
>Get the Vilppu courses.
Doesn't work. I have his anatomy course.

Sometimes I think all these advices from professionals aren't that valuable since they give them from the perspective of someone who understands WAY more than a beginner does and for him it just makes sense. They forgot how they actually got there so they just tell you to "feel the form" whatever the fuck that means. I fucking bet he copied a fuckton of stuff before he started "feeling the form".
Would explain why just getting a tutor or finding a studio is the best thing you can do and will give you much better result than anyone following these advices in the books can dream of.
Isn't that how all old masters learned to draw anyway? Just copying paintings?

nta but if you're that person that was drawing a ton of portraits on toned paper a while ago then your observational skills seem good enough from what I remember.
so i think that you won't get much more out of purely observational drawing. draw a ton from reference but try to use construction when doing so. "feel the form" is kinda a meme phrase but basically be thinking about the 3d structure as you draw from reference. you can also try things like rotating the reference in your head and drawing it from a different angle

My plan is to just straight up memorize as many different forms from as many positions as possible and then get to construction or drawing from reference while thinking about 3D structure like you suggesting so that I would at least know for sure when I'm wrong

You probably should do a bit of both, construction helps a lot when copying forms.
After learning some anatomy, I'm copying stuff twice as fast since I'm not as concerned about getting every line right, I just have to get half of them and deduce the others from it.

Take some guy's arm. You can either draw fifty of them, or remember the muscles are some sort of bumpy triangle going over half the distance between shoulder and elbow, then a few ellipses, one of which goes over the elbow, then a hand which has similar proportion rules you can learn in a day, and get the same result drawing twenty afterwards while probably getting less bored.

Applied study instead of just grinding. He draws a head and then instead of looking at what he's doing wrong, learning and attempting something more ambitious he just draws 40 heads the exact same way. He's developing a perfect visual library for simple pencil drawings of body parts. You don't learn the piano by playing heart and soul 500 times.

Stop worshiping reference, stop worshiping observation, learn proper construction. Your practice should be 30% reference drawing (less, if you can get away with it) and 70% imagination drawing. It's that simple.

References are good if you're actively learning from them, be it perspective, anatomy, lighting etc. Not so much if you're just copying what's in front of you without much thought. that's why the books are important. They teach you what to look for and think about when you practice.

Nobody is saying to never use refs. The point is to not worship refs. Do not copy. Do not try to achieve perfect likeness if you don't need to. Do not focus your practice on copying thousands of refs to perfection. Obviously, that doesn't mean that you should never ever use them. Use them. Study them. Analyze and memorize, than discard.
