ITT: your progress in 2020

I haven't exactly made strides, especially given beginner gains, but in my defense I was slacking off doing nothing for the first ~6 months and only seriously picked up my hoarded books and started going at it daily around June.

Left is what I used to do a few years back, right is 2020.

It's the same amount of effort for all paintings, the ones on the left just look more rushed because I'd autistically detail irrelevant shit in full zoom then try to fill in the empty spaces. I lost a lot of the even older stuff sadly (dead drives), though luckily for your eyes.

Would go through a round of fixing anatomy on that farmer girl but I'm already half-way done on the next painting so whatever.

2020 was actually a really interesting year. I fell in and out of love with the right things, so I'm optimistic now more than I was before. Learning more tools and skills like user interface art for games (GUI design) which brought me to graphic design, logo design, etc. I want to keep learning in 2021 so I can get good at level design and modular game art. Worked with some clients on some web interfaces and am now looking for more opportunities. For my personal art I gave up drawing sexy girls since they bored me and now keep a side account where I draw stuff that makes me happy and nostalgic. I had more time to draw this year due to covid and I got faster with my figures/gesture and workflow compared to last year, I think(?). My most productive was July bc of ArtFight. I still hate painting, enviros and realism :( hopefully I can push through more backgrounds and colored artworks for 2021.

I made a chart. Honestly, it’s been a bit of a gray area, and some of the drawings are mistagged, but It’s mostly the psychology. If i was spicing up someone else’s drawing that I wanted to learn from then its a heavy reference. If I wanted to draw something in my head and i needed help with a pose or something for inspo i just categorize it as inspired / imagination.

This year was a bit of an experiment. I was getting bored of drawing floating girls with no purpose, and i felt like i had enough technical ability to finally draw something that I could imagine, but i didn’t know what I wanted to express on paper. So instead of banging through studies, i spent the year trying to create as many ‘imagination’ drawings to see what was buried in my brain. Or if i saw something i would draw my interpretation / response to it. In some ways i feel that the drawings before Aug are pretty soulless, but everything starting with the carrot titties felt satisfying like i was scratching an itch.

I’d agree, my technical ability is about the same from the beginning of the year, but how i express myself has changed. It turns out i have lots of grotesque, inappropriate, juvenile thoughts.

Never organized them in a pic before. Damn.. considering the pieces I made in April, I should have ended the year way stronger than I did.
Though my hidden gains show with those pieces I did in September / October, but I just don't like going into full autism mode like I did back then so I'm more prone to leaving pieces unfinished or just half-assing them to finish in a few days, I don't really wanna go into weeks looking every nook and cranny of a drawing.

Ironically, even if it's the same girl the drawings are too different I think, so I very little carries over for my next pieces. That cool bike drawing in May? I never used a ref again. The nice 2D style from July 22nd? Never gets used again. Ultra clean lineart from August? Nope, not doing it. Etc..
But whatever, even if I peaked early (though I invested WAY more time and effort into it) I should be glad I got there at all.
I was frankly thinking I could never make it after the lackluster painting from April 2nd, someone even said it looked bored and uninspired which was mostly true. I think I recovered from that low point with flying colors.

Oh, it's you. Here's your problem, you have little interest in actually drawing things. You find shitposting is more rewarding. Getting (you)s gives you immediate validation, and you like that little hit of dopamine more than any long-term gain you could get from practicing art in earnest. You'd probably fail the marshmallow test at age forty, is your problem.

Asking for validation is okay, everyone does it. I'm doing it right now, by posting my turds and winking and nudging another anon to say "aw shucks, it ain't so bad, you'll make it through". But if you want to improve, dial it down a little. Post once a week on /ic/, no more, with all your work for that week. Do this for eight more months and you'll get good, guaranteed.

Here is something I've been doodling today. >>5092318 is my year in autism. You will get better than me in two months flat if you stick to the "don't beg /beg/ for attention" plan.

I prefer digital purely because of convenience. It's faster, and it's easier to fix your mistakes. That being said, I greatly prefer sculpting with clay over something like Blender, even though the same conveniences would apply.
Also, I'm glad my artwork isn't obviously digital.

I think the bottom image is a pretty good comparison then, the drawings at the top show a good understanding of the actual process of drawing. The bottom is very "I want to draw but literally don't know what I'm supposed to do or where to start," and the top shows that you've solved this issue well

Nigger how come you work and still get time to draw 8+ hours a day?
I have never worked full-time, but back when I had to leave for school at 6AM and get back at 6PM, I didn't have the mental energy to do anything, not even shower. Fortunately it was only 3 times a week so on shorter school days I managed to do things I enjoyed.

Amazing stuff.

> how come you work and still get time to draw 8+ hours a day?
I used a few cheats. 1) I used to keep a polyphasic sleep schedule for 10yrs and I could milk 4hrs of drawing / hobbies a day with 8hr job + 5hr commute. 2) i front loaded a decade of working for a lifetime of freedom. Most importantly 3) tricked wife into being sugar mama

Hard to say, up to 2015 was a lot of studies of animation frames and anime drawings which I really needed to get motivated / started. I always try to do full body drawings, i hate doing bust shots they are so unsatisfying. Find a goto artist that you like and just copy. I default to creon and Sameyama jiro.

Cool to see these charts. They'll be very useful for others here on /ic/. You've obviously got heaps of natural facility. You got good very quickly, but you've been stagnating somewhat for a few years, excepting the added detail you're piling in recently, which is probably due to your reliance on copic markers. Ever thought of getting into painting? I dunno if you're already doing it but you could clearly be making a living from these drawings already by taking coom comissions. So money shouldn't be any obstacle to trying new mediums.

Relax dude just keep drawing, you are showing progress, it just may take you a while to see it really come together. It’s in there, aight? Don’t worry about that and just keep drawing.

Most often, you can see the progress come out when you start doing free thought doodles

It worked enough, I slept 4hrs on my commute, and 2-4hrs at home. I usually got 6-8hrs of sleep a day. That left me with 8hrs a day after work/sleep/commute to do whatever I want.

I can't advise on digital. To be honest I unironically find digital a bit soulless. If you want to push yourself I would recommend gouache. It should be close enough to your markers to not be too painful a leap, but at the same time it will give you access to opaque layering techniques, which I think your art could benefit from a lot. You can phase it in gradually to your ink work and see how it goes. If you do, do yourself a favour and buy a large white porcelain tray to mix paint in.
