Reminder that anime didn't really kick in until the 90s, and that's when there was a break from traditional, low-budget Hannah-Barbera animation into Flash/digital. So people posting stuff from the 50s are still not filling the 70s 80s 90s' void.

Although failure of imagination is not a valid argument, your intuition is quite correct. Artwork capitalizing on our baser instincts existed as far back as there was market to fill (so always). However most of it was produced after XVIII century because the market really started taking off after industrial revolution with creation of the middle class. Before that, only wealthy were the patrons and only a fraction of those were interested in art for sake of consumption itself.

Subject of youthful and all-round healthy potential sex partners ('cute') is understandable. Though the more interesting question is why anime girls are usually under 15? I find that women in their 20s are *perfectly* capable of being very cute.
