the extremely saturated colour creates the feeling of bright sunlight on the white snow making a colour brighter than the image is able to show, sam neilson shows a similar effect in his schoolism course where he is painting an image that has the sun in it and he uses really saturated colours on it's edge to make it seem brighter. The effect works when you don't focus on the area, it gives you a sensation of extreme brightness, if you zoom in and look directly at the area and look at the image in a very literal way you won't get the effect and the colours will look a bit wierd.

i was showing some of my crappy digital art i printed out at some tiny local art show. i dont remember to be honest LOL it was a while back. but he was very kind and encouraging, also gave me some reccs for learning plein air painting.
he mentioned his brother too had no idea he was that huge just looked at his twitter he works at dreamworks.
