Need help rendering the stone throne, I looked at reference and added those cracks, but it still looks odd to me. I tried a textured brush but it seemed out of place since everything else was done with round brush. The image is not finished but any critique is welcomed.

I picked up my first real "big" illustration job, doing a few A4 color pieces for a kickstarter RPG book.

Technically I have all January to do them but I want to crank out as much as I can early. I'm still very new to painting and want to try and make the colors bright and interesting, which I think is my biggest weakness.

Anyway feel free to pick it apart color, composition, or whatever-else wise. This is by far the most detailed of the three pieces, the others are mostly characters in various poses.

So I have a few questions; Why is the lightsource for everything uniformly below? Like, all of the shadows on the heads point the same direction which doesn't quite make sense because it means you have two bright spotlights pointing towards the center vanishing point from off-camera, and even still that wouldn't produce those sorts of hard shadows since the light would cross. The figure has the same issue, you have shadows on both the left and the right side of the legs, which are brightly lit in the center implying there's a very, very strong green light directly between her feet, which there isn't. But the underside of her foot ISN'T lit the same way which is confusing. The legs can't both have shadows on opposite sides, you have to pick one side or the other. The very harsh terminator on the shadow just above her right knee implies a very close light source, since shadows get fuzzy the farther they are from the light source, but no other shadow on her body has as much of a harsh termination, which makes the overall lighting very confusing.

As for the stone, you don't need that much detail to sell rock texture, but you do need variation. The easiest way to do it is to have different values to break up the surface. Don't use grey, either, use a strong, muted color and then go up and down in value along the surface to give it imperfections and depth. Make the light color reflect on the surface too, to give contrast between the base, shadow, and highlight color.

Pic related, you can do a lot with very little actual rendering.

>> No.5091815

>>5091783
Thank you for the critique/tips. And I agree, my lighting is shit. I usually only use light coming from the sky so I was trying something new. With this one I also tried to stay aware of the plane changes of the body to give it form but I guess I need to study more. And I had a light source coming from the bottom but it didn't look right so I removed later on. This whole painting was a mess I didn't solve most of my problems during the sketch and got fucked later.

>> No.5091827

>>5091815
I think the most important thing to understand is that light doesn't "create" shadows. It does, but not in the sense that shadows will just appear on surfaces the light doesn't reach. And shadows aren't universally dark, in fact if you look around your room right now you'll quickly see that there is a such thing as "light" shadows, which are created by bounce and ambient light. Your scene clearly has a sky light of at least some intensity, so that means any harsh shadows created by a bright, close source to the subject will still be tempered by that ambient light.

>> No.5091833

>>5091827
Damn I wasn't even thinking about the sky light when rendering. Thank you, I will be more aware of that now.

>> No.5091952

>>5091933
The top of the ear should be basically right in line with the bottom of the eye brow. So in this case it looks like it's too low, because the line of her eyelid is above the tip of the ear. Also I think it's too far back, even for a round and oversized anime head. I would probably raise it and also push it in a bit, probably make it a little bigger too.

none of the features seem to follow any kind of rule for perspective or foreshortening, yet you're obviously trying to get those effects anyway.
the eye closer to the viewer is smaller than the other when it should be bigger lengthwise, yet you increase the size of the further eye heightwise instead?
the nose is pointing upwards, yet her face isn't nearly that tilted....
her chin is so low, if you erased all of these features, you'd have an entirely different face if you followed loomis to even 1/5 of accuracy

your entire style seems to come from feel, and you aren't taking into account the reason things look "off" because you aren't planning placements in the beginning phases of your drafting

your skill at making things look "good enough" is commendable, but you're definitely getting complacent in your current style.

It's subtle, but her boobs have a bit of a pillow shaded effect. The reason for this is that you've made the bounce light/specular light reflecting off the underside of her boobs too consistent.

Niiice line quality and general form. I hope that as you continue this work, you'll still keep some of the texture/improve the texture that the sketch lines offer, as they sort of allow the eyes to rest and admire the form more. Not sure if you're still taking design recommendations at this stage, but due to the heaviness of the detail all-around, it's still pretty hard to find a place for my eyes to rest, aside from maybe on the head. The stark contrast in that regard sort of hurts the eyes at first ("Where am I supposed to actually look?" I always felt like I needed to be looking somewhere else for detail, no matter where I looked). Maybe colors/lighting could fix this, or adding another very high-detail area to the midsection, or obscuring/blurring less-important areas. Good luck, this looks very cool.

I appreciate the input, but I have to follow some specific guidelines, and the client wanted at least two, if not more, carts in the shot to sell the "caravan" scene, and it had to be cresting a hill next to a forest. Hence why I went so zoomed-out. I'm not saying my composition is superior or even that strong, just that I did a few thumbnails/layouts trying to get all that into the image and this was the one I ended up liking the best.

Anyway, I came back to this after some time on another piece and decided to move some stuff around. The size of the horse and dude made the cart look tiny, and I'm trying to fill out the rest.

It's not perfect, but I think it's coming together. I'm just trying to get things balanced somewhat nicely, the rendering is the easy part.

The anatomy is pretty wack if not briefly ignorable. Her body is turned so you can't see almost any of the left side of her face, yet I can see past her belly button and a whole boob? What's happening with the neck? Its apparent that you either traced like someone is accusing you of, or that you drew the arms from reference without thinking how to place the head on top of it. The tummy is a bit of a mess. Try spending more time on construction.

I'm not sure if you plan on creating a source for the orange light in the center, but as is it looks not only artificial but half-committal. Its too subtle as is, but if theres supposed to be a small explosion there that you havent painted in yet, it'll need more oomf depending on where it is in the composition. Also until thats in there I'm ust not a fan of the transitions in color.

Firstly, this is unironically lovely! one of my favs so far. As far as lighting, the effects that a light source have should never be brighter than the light source itself. You'll see this a lot if you watch Corridor Digital break down bad CGI in their youtube series. Its a good rule for noticing bad explosions and stuff. But anyways- back to your stuff.

A lot of the reflections on the metal are nice looking in that they are very bright, but the light sources don't suggest they should be that bright or in some cases, even be there. It is easy to assume there is a soft fill light coming from the front, off camera, that would give the helmet and chest piece a lot of that yellow light. Above and behind the helmet is an extremely soft, billowy lightsource that somehow creates the brightest lights in the piece.

You've got the same issue with the piece on the floor. It is very soft, and should create a similar amount of light on the ground- which I don't think you want. The lefts look very nice as is and just need a light source that'll support it. That can come from some embers sitting behind him, the backside of that magic circle being lighter, or the hand being a magical litght source and adjusting how that light effects the legs. It would need to fill out more on the (our) left leg.

Also, as is, the hands at first seem to come across as being affected by light rather than being a light source themselves. It took me awhile to realize that they should be their own light source.

Also, lighting isn't too difficult to figure out. Watch some tutorials for the more conceptual rules, but you seem to have an ok grasp of light bouncing except you just go a little ham with what you have.

>> No.5097054

>>5092127
i don't like this :( the overlay effects are really obvious and it only helped in pushing some of your background back and inadvertently fixed some of the lighting around the bottom of the hand and around the legs.

Also, ask yourself how that bright rim light is there behind his rib/under the shoulder piece/above the wing on the left side. It was bright before but now its extra bright and theres almost no light source for that area,

Get every object in that image to have 3 separate hues. Just slapping black into everything to drive it down the value scale is going to make everything look flat.

Compositionally, that explosion in the center is a dead end. It immediately draws your eye to the center and wont let it leave. I get how you intend to move the eye about the painting, but that explosion isn't helping. Maybe pull the grass up to the base of the forward wagon's wheel and have the goblins snickering behind it, faces lit by the fuse and that light, leading to the explosion behind them which leads up the horse as you intended. Right now, it's not working.

I would try simplifying the piece as >>5094281
suggests and just slap in what you need as a requirement.

Your piece is struggling at a fundamental level and it's important to take care of the foundation of your work because no amount of rendering can unfuck what is currently fucked.

I was constantly wrestling with the wolfs values actually, since the rabbit is supposed to be white, when I turned the image into grayscale, it made no sense that the wolfs highlights were just as bright even though he is grayish.(his name is legosi by the way, its from a manga)

As for the eyes of the rabbit, you are absolutely right on that one, makes it look like its got a thousand year stair. The reason it turned out that way is because the original sketch was done in pencil. The rabbit (haru) was drawn way too big, so I had to shrink her down. I'll see what I can do. Thank you for the feedback.

I may be wrong, but I feel like the hand is a bit oversized? It feels large compared to the calf, as if it's closer to the camera, but the calf should be closer to the camera due to the position. Also it may be the armor/whatever, but the shoulder feels very shrugged, as if it's being pulled in and up, it should be more relaxed if she's reaching down.

Other than that it seems like it's doing what you want it to do for the most part.

I think it's a little better. The shoulderpad is just throwing me a little bit because I can't shake the feeling that I'm seeing planes on it shouldn't be that visible. Maybe it's supposed to be really convex on all sides, but I get the sense that since we're looking from a low enough angle to see the bottom planes of things like those little greeblies on the stomach and shit, we should see less of the top of the shoulderpad and more of the underside of it.

For this I used references sporadically. Faces are easier to draw from certain angles and more difficult in other angles so where I had trouble I used 3d models online to help get a footing. There are a couple people in the bg that I referenced from movies but most of them are just made up

usually I never outright trace or directly copy any reference but for this there are just so god damn many people that I caved in 2 or 3 places.

I use sketchfab for looking at models. Google it, it's a great site for references.
