I've never done anything like that before, but a commission has sort of fallen unto my lap. How much should I charge for 3 animated twitch stream screens? Think minimal animation, like a person chilling, leafing through a book or something, nothing extravagant.
Also, how the fuck do I get paid? Do I ask for paypal money upfront?
>I have no idea what I'm doing pls halp

>> No.5088673

money up front, you should decide your prices yourself compared to others. animations are always more than illustration

That's the thing, just from lurking around here I have a rough estimate of how much I would charge for illustrations, but I have absolutely no reference for animation

ebisu is a dumbfuck

>> No.5088744

So in the end I asked for 40 USD per second of animation. Hope I don't scare the customer away cause it sounds like a fun project.

At least minimum wage per hour of work. Currently I charge $30/hr but it’s cuz I’m fast and good.

do you have any work you're willing to share?

Just some info incase you need reference;

I do Twitch overlay commissions. I charge $80 flat per overlay, $30 per flat splash screen, and extra for things like logo design, social media graphics, etc. I don't do animation at all.

1. Don't negotiate. Pick your price and ask for it.. You can, if you really feel like you need money, take only what people CAN pay, but you should really ask for more.
2. If they want your work, you don't need to sell it to them. But you can upsell them by offering more services.
3. Always get half up front. People can and will cancel before final payment, so having something for your time spent is how you don't feel like you lost that time. Use Paypal, it's simple to make invoices and keep track of your orders and have a paper record.
4. Give them a time quote, and stick too it if you can. Ask for feedback, keep them in the loop, and deliver early if possible. Good service sometimes means extra payment as a tip, or return customers.

>Animators bill their services to clients on a fee-per-second basis. Fees vary widely by industry, size of client, type of animation and experience. For two dimensional animation, the advertising industry pays $300-$2,000 per second, while corporate animation pays $150-$2,500 per second.
Obviously if your animation is minimal, that will factor in to the price, but just consider how long it takes you to do one second of animation.
$40/second is extremely low, even for something simple.

I mean, I'm just a small time amateur illustrator with no animation experience. I checked around and saw someone making animation worse than what I think I can do and charging 50-60USD per second. So I lowballed it at 40... but it still scared the client away I think so eh

>> No.5090973

>>5090945
did you quote a number, or tell him it’s $40/s?
you should never give a rate, but even aside from that, he might have vastly overestimated the cost if you did, since I’m assuming you’re making a loop where “1s of animation” =/= 1s of playback

>charges 40$ for 1 sec of animation instead of each frame
>scares the streamer anyway because he probably got another artist for even cheaper
Next time lay down that you'll guarantee quality or else you give their money back and to avoid them stealing your work you say you will blur the animation in strips and each character's face and charge at least 50$ per different frame

I've never been on /ic/ before and was wondering if it's allowed to pay for commissions here. I need a sprite character sheet and portrait sheet for Stardew Valley based on Agrias Oaks (Final Fantasy Tactics) so that I can make her a custom character. Name your price(s). I'll be keeping track of the thread. If you can't/won't do it yourself but can refer me to other artists, I'd appreciate that greatly.

>> No.5091244

Even so, that's very low. Again, think about how long it takes you to make that animation. $40 doesn't go very far.

>but it still scared the client away I think so eh
If you scared anyone away with prices that low, you don't want to work with them anyway. Clients that want to pay that little for commission don't respect artists and are extremely demanding and selfish.

>> No.5091249

>>5091050
It's not against the rules, but jumping into some other thread is not the way to do it. If you really want to commission someone, make a thread with a way to contact you.
Besides that, you're doing it backwards asking artists to come to you.

I told her the rate, I guess that was bad, even I don't know what per second means... I just copied it from someone. Maybe if I told her 50 bucks per animated screen? Even if it's low I wouldn't feel comfortable for more, really
>>5091244
She did start off by trying to simp me into it ("Would you consider drawing such and such for a cute girl ;)" etc)... But when I told her I'd only do it for money she immediately accepted it and was like "of course, let's talk" etc. I think she just doesn't know about that stuff, same as me. And I guess I didn't scare her away, she keeps messaging me... but without outright accepting so it's in limbo I guess?
Also keep in mind that the art is already done (it's an old piece she liked and wants animated for her twitch), so just animating details on it will take me very little effort. Honestly I feel like I'm stealing even though the rate is supposedly low

What the fuck? No, that's retarded.
Charge 50% upfront and 50% on delivery like every other professional.

>and to avoid them stealing your work you say you will blur the animation in strips and each character's face
This is complete nonsense, where are you getting this shit from? When you show the client the finished product, simply send them a lower res version of the finished piece. If the client isn't happy with it at that point, they can back out, and you keep the 50% up front fee to cover the time spent working on it, and the client doesn't get the final file.
