it's too flat. give it some more personality with texture work. hairs don't have single sections normal to a light source, they have patterns that get highlighted. they're also not so uniform on colors
this is all if, of course, you're not going for a flat look. small pallets aren't an excuse, you can use colors of different guess and it would only make it look better

So I kinda start out by sketching like you would any other drawing, and as I draw I refine pieces here and there and explore the aesthetic I want to go with.
Typically I fully render a part of the drawing in a style, and then do the rest in a similar manner with the same rules I laid out in the first rendering.
And yeah, I made brushes for the dithering because otherwise it took way too fucking long, in Aseprite its stupid easy to make brushes, so I did that. This one took about 4 days of on and off work to finish.
Some of the effects I did involve laying down a dithered pattern and then blacking out pieces of it with the default 1 pixel brush to give it a glitchier or more broken look as well.
I also do these as 1 layer drawings, kinda like a painting, obvious exceptions being when I do animations.

Because there is something to be said for making something as simple as pixel art complicated.
Hell doing binary isn't the same either, I draw in binary as well but you can't replicate dithering or texture the same way.
Pixel art just looks different even at a large scale, and I dig it.

Not bad, but dull colors. Assuming the lack of any shading is a WIP thing, since the orb looks good.
Perspective is off. The above platform is bigger than the below one so it looks like the above is closer. The foot position implies opposite. Also the platforms look like turds, could have a stronger "floating island ripped up from the ground" design.
Pistol is not as emphasized as it should be as a weapon. At that angle you would see little more than the top of the slide. Tweak the pose such that it is more of a profile view.
The orb is neat, with pleasant texture and colors though said texture lacks polish with orphans and noise. Lightning bolts are strangely ribbon-esque. Reference stylized and real electricity.
>>5094984
If the white pixel strip is panties the torso is extremely long, and lower legs are tiny. Use a reference for this pose since it's relatively advanced.
>>5092946
Easy way to cheat more intrigue in your animations is to desync them. Have the balls animate at different delays. Follow this principle with the sparks too. Currently the entire piece looks sturdily tethered by invisible trusses.
>>5087970
>>5088313
On a very good track with being rid of the internal black lines.
Your shading method is incorrect and too soft. Colors are barely distinguishable from each other. Try to use no more than a handful of shades of colors per element. Don't use antialiased tools to shade. Study cel shading.
Also, arms are too small.
>>5086624
Since the clothing stays rigid it does just look like transform tool edits. Have internal elements such as the cloth also bounce, and during the movement the sword should change angles with the tip of the blade lagging behind. Study subpixel animation, it will work great here.
Legs move like hydraulic pistons. Think about how your thigh moves while beginning a crouch. It hinges at the knee, which is what lowers you.
The pendant moves left and right despite it being an entirely vertical movement.

Just a digital drawing. It's not pixel art because it's displayed via pixels; same as a digital photograph isn't pixel art.
The issue isn't that the picture is large, to be pixel art you have to actually follow the rules of pixel art, or try to. In that picture there's horrid aliasing with no effort made to prevent it; an excessively large palette is used instead of dithering; outlining is completely inconsistent; and individual pixel placement is thrown to the wayside. Pixel art require that pixels individually matter. You don't have to place each one one at a time, but you can't ignore them entirely for the whole either. Look at these details; they're not acceptable from a pixel art perspective. It looks fine as a drawing as a whole, but not as pixel art. The fact that the artist decided to compress the drawing so you can't even easily pick out the pixels just elucidates my point, individual pixels don't matter in the piece, ergo it is not pixel art.
No one would seriously suggest this kind of thing in a 32x32 piece is acceptable, so it shouldn't be acceptable in a larger piece either. WoW icons are only 64x64 but I wouldn't call them pixel art, because they try very hard not to be. Meanwhile, >>5077633 is probably like 150x150, but maintains the principles and style of pixel art.

So, in pixel art every individual pixel must have purpose? That's what you meant in short?
If so, how do you distinguish between just bad, amateur pixel art and non-pixel art?

>> No.5095766

>>5095742
Intent. It can be difficult, but I feel quite confident in this particular example there was simply no effort or thought put into a lot of it. Stuff like the line along the spine is just not something any aspiring pixel artist would do. Even if someone wasn't happy with the end result, I would expect some comment about the issues with aliasing, or how the lightning was really hard with only two colors, or a couple examples of attempts at anti-aliasing, or something. Doing/saying nothing AND providing the image in a compressed, non-perfect form is just not caring about pixels at all.
There are plenty of examples higher in the thread, my own included, that are far from perfect, but you can tell the artist was trying.

I think it's adorable you're making up rules for what "pixel art is" that are completely arbitrary. Why must it have dithering? Why does it need to look good in 32x32? Those are just the rules some initial pixel artists had to follow out of technical necessity. The reality is that pixel art is an art style. It's not necessarily easy to define, like you so effortlessly attempt, but it is certainly easy to spot and claiming something isn't pixel art when it clearly is only makes you a pompous elitist ass

Well I didn't realize I had to prove it what my process is so I took a quick screenshot of a WIP. Here it is more properly transfered, perhaps now you can tell that I indeed did pay attention to aliasing and in fact, contrary to what you claim, I paid attention on where each pixel was placed - well, almost each. But pretty close. It's not perfect or even good really, but I specifically went for that retro "rotorscoped" kind of pixel art you might see on Another World for example, if you know it.

>> No.5095878

>>5095845
First of all, if you read what you linked, most of what you claimed makes pixel art is categorized as techniques and not as defining aspects. I think you will notice that the first line of the definition of pixel art states that there is no concrete definition of what pixel art is (despite the fact that it goes on to define it based on what "most pixel artists agree"... and that is why Wikipedia is not the bible kids)
Also, as to that forum post, I understand the point being made, but I respectfully disagree. For example, the first picture of a tree is not pixel art, but the comparison pixelated zoomed in picture of the tree, I personally would consider pixel art, even if it was not hand-made to be so

Nipples do not go nuclear with the gap between them like that. They could if the breasts were huge and sagging but not here. In this instance also the clothing should perfectly cover them, but instead here they sit on the cleavage instead of the zenith of the breast.
As a design element the hat is really small. Assuming it's a witch hat but it's really tiny, which is a missed opportunity for some nice exaggeration. It also doesn't rest on the head at all but floats above, redline the scalp and you can see this.
The right hand should be holding onto the leg to hold this pose for more than 3 seconds, but it's entirely absent. The upper body is disconnected with the pose in general, remove the lower body and it would work as a bust piece. Some shoulder action by not having them be level would go a long way. Tilt the head towards the leg also for more curvature and stronger center of mass.
Lower leg and head are too small, and left arm elbow lacks structure.
>>5096942
Technically correct, but at this resolution you want to work shape appeal for all it's got. Avoid having too many bumps and indents with the limbs since even one missing pixel deforms the shapes too much.
See pic related, this lower leg is an unappealing shape. It starts medium, suddenly thickens then suddenly thins into an ankle. Perhaps correct in anatomy but doesn't translate well here, the resolution doesn't allow for the pleasant curves normal art can provide us.
Also lower legs blend too much with thighs. This is hard to solve with shapes as I described so try shading to differentiate the parts. Shading the whole lower leg dark is an effective cheat.
Arms are too noodly and small. Shoulders are also missing.
The back hair view doesn't align with that the front view shows but looks good. Bring the front hair up to the same quality. The stacked blob of outline is strange and looks like a shadow where there should be very little.
Vary facial expression across the poses.

Having a tough time identifying the nose. Does she have piercings or are they nostrils? I don't think you need to showcase the nostrils at all here.
Mouth could be simplified. There is little room for lipstick while also having expressive and distinct emotion. Here for example I struggle to know if she is gaping her mouth or sitting neutral.
Neck shading receives light from the opposite direction of the face.
Hair is highly pillow shaded, and has worse colors than your walk anim cycle for some reason. I like the anim colors more over all, they are vastly more lively. I don't like the darkest skin shade that is suddenly much more saturated than the next shade in line.
The blue shoulder pad thing could use more attention.
I also think there is too much antialias. The bare shoulder for example doesn't even need to be anything other than flat color since it won't receive light. Below the necklace could be cleaned up too.

if you absolutely must post something at a larger scale, do 1x, 2x, and 4x or something, and ensure it's at least a common multiple/zoom level
a lot of things like (anti)aliasing, how colors interact/blend, how clear details are, etc. can look good/fine at a zoomed in level, but fall apart when it's actually 1x

Lemme give you a tip though, depending on how new you are, focus on figure drawing instead if you want to draw characters (it really helped me out)
If you feel like that's too hard, stick with drawing simple forms then try to combine them into complex forms. Once you're comfortable with that, you should try figure drawing again

Oof, then I would suggest practicing using pen and paper
You're in your toddler phase so expect a lot of frustration, but I promise you it will be worth it
Stick to drawing simple forms (boxes, spheres, cylinders etc) in simple perspective (read Norling's book on perspective made easy), then like I mentioned earlier, combine them into more complex forms. Although the thought behind "Draw A Box" is good, the execution of repetitively grinding boxes will get tedious extremely fast and burn you out (in my opinion, of course) so I would rather suggest that you vary your simple forms and not take it to the extreme when it comes to grinding. Draw some shapes, get comfortable with them and move on onto more challenging stuff.

do you guys ever make fake game screenshots? meaning you pick a retro system's resolution, color palette, limitations etc and make it look as of it was an actual game.

I love making fake NES cutscenes for example.

I love how images can't make up the entire screen (unless you use the transparent color a shit ton. like a night scene or something) so it's usually one or more small boxes with the art and some text at the bottom or wherever. It just looks so cool to me.

Not bad. Study and utilize hue shifting, it's fundamental. Also study selective outlines, it will look great with the low contrast outlines you have here.
Weird highlights on the corner of the armor segments and base of the neck. I assume you tried to shade the armor with a right hand light source? That's not how it would look.
Facial features all sit too low on the face. Jaw angle is too steep. Neck is slightly too thin.
Ear piercings are needlessly complicated. They all can be simplified into clusters of one grey color like the rings of the armor.
Quiver is too small. Arrows too, and they are jagged (study jaggies).
>>5108876
Head is shaped like some cut diamond esque object. Study planes of the face. Don't have to go too hard on it since it's relatively advanced, but study enough to get an idea of how to shade a face.
Banding around the eyes.
Horns are flat since they don't interact with the hair but also aren't suggested to come out of the forehead.
Hair is probably the biggest issue here, hard to comment on where to even improve. Look at references.
>>5108752
>>5108399
Really good. On the full body the torso is too small and you went too hard on wasp waist. Pic related is what I thought of it.
The bat dithering could be simplified and I think the bomb would look nicer if bigger.

Ok did some futzing with it, still very much WIP. I got rid of all the shading and lighting until I suck less at it, definitely need to practice it for a while, same with hue shifting. Not sure how I feel about the simpler color earrings. Thickened the neck a bit, and slightly modified the jaw, and thinned the face a tad since she was looking a bit too human. Redid the arrows, and quiver, though they still kinda suck. Fixed the feature position as well. Scaled up 400%. Attempted selective shading, but Im too OCD to not shade the hair. You have to use a reference for the hair, I don't think you're doing that. References are vital.
Armor shading is a lot better. Its contrast could be higher.
The ear piercings were good when flat colored, not sure why you reversed it.
Irises have lots of banding and ears pillow shading.
Arrow design is way better. Quiver looks parallel with body, as in straight, but the arrows sit at a diagonal angle. They would be piercing the leather and poking out through. They're also still tiny.

sorry for the unintentional demeaning attitude, is just that i got a bit too cocky since i just learn the method of doing tile sets this way.

I was doodling on Dia de Reyes this.

A lot of fourth gen and further stuff isn't pixel art. Donkey Kong Country sure as hell isn't pixel art, but Super Mario Allstars is.

That's theoretically all you need to know. Look up PC-98, that is the system those screenshots are from.

I'm halfway through making a piece with those restrictions right now. I'm not really a pixel guy so there's a lot of sloppiness, but I'm trying.

Look up various PC-98 games. I think that's from a PC-98 game, anyways. 80s to early 90s Japanese computer games have a lot of art like this.

the japanese use to draw on copic sketches, the scale them down and retrace those drawings.

other method is the bilinear shrinking method with color indexing and still requires manual cleanup and color and shading work.

I don't know who/what 'Schizo' is, I just thought this specific thread was for pixel art. Practically the whole rest of the board is for drawing normally, why bring it in here too? I just want a small space where I don't have to deal with faggots for a little bit.

it's not shitty at all. the only difference it has with Deluxe Paint (which people seem to generally agree is one of the best "pixel art" tools of all time) is that the toolbar is at the bottom instead of to the side.

it's honestly worth it you can learn it very fast. i had to learn it because aseprite was no longer free on linux and now I got so used to it that I wouldn't go back 2bh.
