Probably make it a point to charge an additional fee if they add more then one character. You can probably add another 5-10 bucks for color and maybe have backgrounds be 15-20 bucks

>> No.5075362

>>5075283
Honestly I think you should test some higher prices for a while (if you have enough money to live, in case people turn away).
Like 120$ for full color +40$ for background. If it doesn't work lower the price little by little. Yaoi isn't really my thing so I could be wrong but I don't see a lot of artist for that kind of stuff in general. If you draw for a niche market with this quality, you can ask for more. You may get less commissions but in the end a better pay so it's a win-win. Work less to get more.

I only do trad commissions (oil paint portraiture mostly) and have been consistently increasing my prices as I've been getting more clients. The keys are to start with a relatively low but fair price to you and to USE your clients as free advertising once they receive the work. Eventually you'll have people coming to you left and right. Also trad artwork is easier to sell than digital because it's a one-of-a-kind work. This is where digital falls short, unfortunately, and it's why you won't ever be able to ask for as high of prices for that of trad. commissions (unless you're super famous or something, which you're obviously not to that point).

Also ask for a small upfront charge so you get some money right away. Last thing you want is some guy to cancel on you in the middle of a work and get no money out of it. This rarely happens, but it can. Best to get what you can out of it. This also helps filter out those potential circumstances, as nobody wants to just throw away money without getting a final product.

This is kind of hard to do with coomer art.

It's a sincere question--how can you estimate a price for a commission when you don't have a finished work to show what you're selling?

>> No.5078939

First and foremost
>What are you actually willing to draw?
>What can you draw decently?
>Who is your target audience?
>How long does a work take you?
You should always ask yourself this first before trying to decide on a price for your work.

I'm trying to be objective here and judge completely on quality and the piece itself, so don't get your panties in a twist please.
>>5078839
I'd say easily 30+ bucks for starters.
When you start doing less mistakes, and less sketchy work, you can charge way more.
>>5078827
hmm that style is very unique and i don't know what to make of it.
You can try just opening up commission but never undersell. Try to at least get 30 for a piece.
Where? Social media.
But if you're desperate for money; get a job.
>>5078651
I can't say how your finished work would be valued because i don't see it.
15-25 is the anime average for flats.
But It -really- depends on the quality of your finished work.
>>5078432
If people are willing to pay you what you ask for, go for it. You can always change prices depending on clients feedback.

I'm yanking your chain a little fren.

Your pencil work is very nice, and with some refinement, they could sell for 100+ if you can find people who want pencil drawings of this subject matter (I don't know who those people are--I assumed this sort of character portrait was commissioned digitally). With physical media, it's hard to make it worthwhile unless you're making about that kind of money for a small piece.
>Work on archival illustration board or smooth cold press watercolor paper
>Render clothes and hair with as much care as the eyes and lips (while keeping some of this sketchy looseness)

The same way you estimate it for every other commodity : basic accounting and economics.

let's say a guy wants me to draw furry anal vore.
>There's two characters, one is small
>but of course they have rainbow fur and piercings
>Guy wants full color
>I spend 4 hours on this

>Cost of living is 1000 a month
>I get X commissions a month with varying complexity
>assuming a sketch is 1 hour, flat color 1h30 and full textured 3h, I work Y hours a month
>let's say 40
>I need to charge at least 1000/40 = 25 per hour just to break even
>but wait, I get dicked by taxes
>27 ?

At this point, the picture of an anthropomorphic rainbow dog shoving another one in his ass already costs 130 at the bare minimum.

you now want to figure out a margin for two reasons : one, money is fucking awesome. two, X is constantly fluctuating and you want to be able to absorb market fluctuations. Take people working for show business, a sound engineer, lighting technician or the people in charge of costumes make my monthly salary in 3 days, and I send shit into space for a living. But the reason they do is that they sometimes work 3 days a month, and not every month. It's the same for you, you need to account for that according to what you draw.

if you draw basic anime coom, fantasy or other mainstream categories, demand is relatively high and stable, you can get away with a smaller margin and low hourly rate, you'll likely work way more than 40 hours a month.
if you're the anal vore unbirth futa NTR snuff guy, you'll go several months unemployed and need something like 60 or 80% to stay afloat.

so in the end, pricing the example commission at 200$ would make it look like you're a greedy asshole, but would actually be fairly reasonable.

Of course there is. Furfags are probably the only ones who didn't get fucked over by the pandemic making normies less likely to drop 20$ for their waifu while furries are only getting hornier with isolation, but I'm using a niche market for the example.

Now there's all kinds of stuff that goes into pricing, and all kind of black magic to help people price shit in a given market, I'm just too lazy to post about it on the art board.

NEET is a bad professional word.
And you should try to get more relevant.
Less RTing stuff hoping that the big boys will notice you, because it clutters up your own timeline and people think you're just another spammer and won't follow you. It would work on niptwitter but westtwitter is different.
Also try to make clear what people are in for when they follow you.
Stay consistent in theme and style, both in the art and in what you post i.e. if you draw anime then people are gonna be there for the anime and nothing else.

Yep. And no one should ask anyone in these threads for pricing either. The only people that 'price' people are people that do not know the first thing about making a living with art, or how business works in general.
What's more, we have had multiple instances of people in these threads admitting that they are intentionally telling people to price things lower for selfish reasons.

Might as well, even though I'm not expecting anything particularly fruitful.

The better advice is to ignore people who think they can appraise a piece just by seeing it and instead do the math for how long it takes you to make the piece yourself.
The better advice is to do what actual industry professionals do instead of asking people who have no experience in or knowledge of the industry.

Look at typical hourly rates for other professions that require training and skill and decide from there. I would personally recommend not going under $20/hr.

>if you're the anal vore unbirth futa NTR snuff guy, you'll go several months unemployed and need something like 60 or 80% to stay afloat.
>so in the end, pricing the example commission at 200$ would make it look like you're a greedy asshole, but would actually be fairly reasonable.

This is great advice and this is so true. If you specialize in something or are very niche that means you can charge more than someone who does more 'mass merchy' things, because you are harder to find. Anyone who seeks you out in particular know that your type is harder to come by and are usually more willing to shell out the money to work with you. Also, you don't get hit up as often so you have to account for that and your prices need to reflect that otherwise you are better off get a McJob at that point.

I am not going to say that this has any bearing on you getting commission work or not, but this is just something I noticed about your art. It is nice, but it seems like this piece: >>5080632 looks dirty. In fact these, too: >>5080600 >>5080614 they are looking a bit dead in the color department. I am going to suggest learning some color theory and then go outside so you can actually see color in all its glory and practice painting it. Even when you copied this piece: >>5081045 you maybe should have also studied the artists' choice in color a little bit more and applied it to your own work.

I mean there are times when work gets a little sparse which is why you have to charge enough to cover for that. Again, I am not saying this affecting your ability to get commissions, but I do think it would be a great thing to practice while you are trying to drum up more work.

Good luck.

I noticed that the price adviced here is higher than places like fiverr, where you can find good artists for 5 dollars. I was planning to open an account and undersell my art but I'm not sure anymore.
Why is there such a price difference?

90% of the value of your art comes from finding an audience willing to pay for it. Fiverr artists are cheap because they don't want to put in that work, so they're in a race to the bottom price-wise competing with swarms of others. Establish a follower base on any decent platform and you'll be able to sell commissions for the prices quoted in here; don't put in that work and you shouldn't expect to be paid for it.
