Did anyone else here do art at A-level/AP/whatever they call it in your country?
I looked up the classmates I was friends with and they both ended up going to art school. One is absolute dogshit but her drawings are full of soul, the other is decent technically but does nothing except pencil portraits of celebrities.
I think I'm the only person from that class who didn't go to art school actually.

I think my friends were just shit really, I had a look at my other classmates recent work and it was pretty good. The one who is dogshit has a very bad case of dunning kruger where I don't think she's even considered that her skills might not be there. I am very new, so trying to break it down more and get more detail into it is hard. should I move on to other stuff and just try these rough sketches first before trying to act like I can do high level detail?
for a style that I like, this dude and his work (https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/63262209)) I really like and for some of his works he has it broken down. But I notice that even his roughest fill in still is pretty solidly defining the scene. It depends on the brushes you use and what size. You can add all the details you want, but the main goal is to make the viewer see the whole picture and read off from it. That's what the big canvas is for. Try it and upload one that is 300dpi and one in 72dpi and see the difference.

Heres 1 month progress. But how many hours is that? Thats the actual question you should be asking here. Mileage is more important that raw "days, weeks, months". If thats the case, my 1 month is probably around 200 hours. Give or take. 6-8 hours a day. Doesnt seem so impressive when you change it hours, does it? Seems a lot slower and more digestible.
4 months of drawing can literally mean 120 hours ( 1 hour a day) or 1200 hours (10 hours a day). Keep this in mind next some some guy posts crazy progress and says "oh ive been drawing for only 3 months haha" before you go schizo mode. 4 month guy is probably grinding and drawing for literally all the time hes awake like Yoh Yoshinari

I'm kind of similar. Art was my best A level (my only A grade) but I kept trying to get into STEM afterwards because I thought I was too much of a dead inside autist to do anything creative. Tried twice and dropped out first year after becoming a paranoid asocial hikki 3 months in both times. I have essentially been a hikkineet my entire 4 years of adult life.
Got nowhere further to fall (drug addiction or alcoholism perhaps but I'm not really the type) so might as well do something fun while I'm down here. As a beginner you should spend about 50% of your time doodling whatever you want and 50% of your time practicing, and for practice you should draw things from image reference, preferably easy things like random rock formations and old wavy trees, drawing faces and people is hard so you shouldn’t start right off with that (but you can draw whatever you want when it’s for fun), other fundamental to grind to improve are listed and explained in the OP sticky

I decided to take a break from just doing constant fundies and gesture grinding and drawing from reference, to try out digital again with my tablet, but really research the resolution to draw at, pen customization, and just try and take it seriously.

I did these doodles just fucking around, no reference, and I'm feeling extremely giddy. These are ass in terms of proportion, I know, but I feel like there's some sort of switch that changed in me. Especially with that bottom sketch. The line control, the angles, something about it is making me look at it, and for the first time see some innate results.

I can't fucking put my finger on it but I FEEL like I actually am starting to understand the form, these were like 5 minutes tops. I haven't actually tried drawing from imagination or done anything other than studies for months. And I can fucking see the results. Holy shit I know I still have a long ass way to go, but I just wanted to share the excitement of something clicking in your brain.

I am feeling this, right now. Just something about understanding line weight and form that I'm starting to grasp, and it feels fucking fantastic.

the thing that finally clicked for me is realizing that the most important thing is finding and keeping track of the corner of the box that's closest to you. the three lines that extend out from that corner determines where all the other lines will converge to, and this is true of every single box form present in a scene. even if you have 100 boxes aligned to the same vanishing points, the corner closest to the viewer will determine the main lines that the rest of the lines of the box converge to for each individual box form. before i realized this i had a real difficult time conceptualizing how boxes worked together, but now it feels a lot simpler. (note this doesn't really apply if the box is on the horizon line, but i wasn't really having trouble with those)

Yeah, hard opacity brush. I did the values first, where the base is 50 (the middle between black and white) and then the darker values on top of that (so it's darker than you really want it to be). Then you make a layer for flat colours and set it to overlay, and then fuck around with various overlay and multiply layers for adjusting lighting and shadows, painting over etc. until it looks right.
