IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH!

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

someone mentioned Hitokaku in the last thread, and in searching the archives for mention of it someone brought up "draw the owl" which described something I asked about in the last thread. When looking at some of the explanations on starting up on construction there always feels like this jump that is being treated as simple in how it's not even addressed but I am completely lost. Google also doesn't feel half as useful anymore so trying to search out these questions never goes anywhere.

Got 2 sketches here. I know the Santa sketch is a bit skewed to one side and the little girl only has 4 toes.

The girl I drew is my friends daughter and I drew from a pose she did. The Santa was sketched from imagination.

Just for a bit of context, I started and work in 3d art but wanted to go back and learn traditional drawing to try and better my overall understanding of fundamentals and art in general.

What's are your critiques?

draw with fewer lines. try to make each pencil stroke mean something to you; you are covering up your mistakes on the kid by chicken scratching your lines

since you have background in 3d, make quick pose references in blender or sketchup or w/e you'll see that the feet on the kid make no sense regardless of the camera angle

>> No.5062506

Thanks for the feedback.

Ya I tend to do very light and frequent lines when I'm trying to block out shapes and stuff. One of the first channels I started watching for traditional was fzd school so I kind of adopted his "squiggly" line approach to blocking out.

Work on lim-connection and their function, you need to construct and learn perspectice too, if you look at her shoes, they look flat without form, draw gestures everyday (30-1 min. ones)
>>5062351
they are stiff, you have to look at which direction the parts are facin', but at first always take at the figure as a whole and than just moce your hand and catch the moevement like you woul catch a fly with your hand, you need to draw gestures daily to get a feelin for it, as for nearly everything.
>>5062371
Don't draw just the outlines if you are beginning, try to concentrate on the form and overall shapes of your subject. If you start with rendering without knowledge about form you will have a hard time.
>>5062494
Perspectice, gestures, give your figures volume they're flat atm.. And stop using scratch-lines, do flowy lines.

there's no one clear path for fundamentals. it's a chaotic progress comprised of different areas and skillsets. good books or other resources that target the individual parts of fundamentals and grind those, e.g. perspective made easy or how to draw for, well, perspective, or vilppu's drawing manual for form and gesture.
i suggest doing lesson 0 and 1 of drawabox as well, it's good for improving your draftsmanship but the rest of the lessons are kind of a waste of time.

You cant see the bony protrusion from this angle, its more on the side, also, since shes flexing some muscles by kneeling at that angle, you cant see it, instead from the side, youd see a small crater where no muscle but only a small amount of fat is present. Try it yourself, whether youre a man or woman, and youll feel that indent. Thats where the femur is.

Drawing the skeleton is never pointless, it's what will let you figure out the general area of where you should place the muscles. IMO the best path to take is learning the most superficial muscle groups.

In your case, you're trying to replicate the shape of her body by starting with the skeleton first. That is difficult if youre trying to capture her likeness. You cant see them, but only the muscles on top. The only two bones you can see are the two red hip points. The skeleton is only useful for learning the lengths of limbs and placements. After that, the muscles are the most important to capture likeness on the body.

So yeah, learn the hip points in front, and practice visualizing by overlaying the muscle groups on top. Do NOT forget that there is fat on top of those parts of a woman which changes the shapes you actually see, for men it is slightly different.

Your drawing is cute, you just need to pay attention to how perspective works in real life, why is the window receding into the distance and getting smaller if it’s sitting on the other side of the room from the viewer with both sides about an equal distance from the viewers eyes? Lips is probably my fault because I didnt use a reference... tried to draw lips in the ref 3 times and each time it just made her look like a mouth breather with a bucktooth so I gave up and made something up

I want to make sure I get the fundies, but should I also try sketching along side doing the practice? just following the guide feels like there is no set point on where good is good enough to move on and work on other things while still brushing up on previous stuff. Should I do shit like using fundies to create the best image I can (for ex. trying to make a train station with perspective boxed and stuff?) so I get fundy practice and real drawing experience at the same time to limit burnout?

I kinda have a bit of a feel for individual features
struggling to throw it all together from random angles
Lot of times I will do a portrait without trying to measure anything. Just eyeballing.
Every feature will be fine but they'll all be off by a couple centimeters and it makes it look retarded
I can do a straight forward portrait but from an angle is very hard

I feel like what I need to do is draw those shape outlines onto the heads first. Like with the sphere with the circle wrapping around the brow area.
But idk how tf people do that
I get that its just lines but it just feels like a rest of the fucking owl type thing
People link tutorials on how to do it and its some dude making like 7 shapes look like a human.
Like my hand just doesn't do it. I can't even get close unless I zoom in and just copy it pixel for pixel painfully slowly. Trying to just 'feel it' in one stroke doesn't work either.

I can move paint around a canvas and make it look like an eye, or a nose, or lips, etc
but I can't seem to just put lines on a page and make them look like the structure of what I'm drawing.
Watching other people do it makes it seem like magic

I don't get reflections I get that you just mirror stuff but how does it work?
The moon is covered up in the reflection, how are you meant to know that or the small hill on the bottom left is very different from it's reflection in terms of shape

instead of using rulers is it fine to just use the shift on photoshop to get straight lines? I don't see how it could hurt me since whenever there is a situation where I would need a ruler in the future, this feature is not really that different other than being more accurate. I would only use it in purely geometric stuff like boxes or horizon lines, where accuracy makes a big difference in outcome.

You can do what you like, everyone uses a ruler when they need a straight line

Ok no more upside down traces.. I think I got the hang of it now to trace with the eye... Oh god.

Am I drawing too fast, do I need to take it slow? symbol drawing is a bitch.

>> No.5067147

>>5067097
zero construction and bad results. Yes you are skipping about at least 30 things you should know before even attempting to draw an eye yet. You're literally the definition of symbol drawing, stop what you're doing and learn to draw heads first.
