Is your family supportive of your art?

Only recently.

"Log Kya Kahenge" means "What will people say?", it's a very toxic mentality in south asian cultures, specifically Sikh and Hindu communities.

What art of yours made them say "What will people say?" to you?

Not so much the art, but the interest in art itself. In our culture(s), the stereotypes are somewhat true, if you're not trying to become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer you're essentially wasting your life/money.

Not to mention in Indian cultures (especially Sikh/Punjabi cultures like mine) the way your kids turn out to be is a massive flex on other families, it's literally "look at how successful my kid is or how much money he makes", and pursuing a career in art comes with negative connotations in these communities.

It wasn't until I ended up presenting my art at a TedXpo where my family thought "oh fuck maybe we were wrong".

Lmao sounds pretty much just like Philippines. The onset of pandemic forced my parents to close the store so I'm the one paying bills, now I'm easier to love kek.

I can only imagine what that must've been like growing up in that environment. I came to art relatively late in my life, and my mom is into art herself, so I've never had to deal with that. Glad to hear got to the point where you don't let that pressure bother you though.

>It wasn't until I ended up presenting my art a a TedXpo where my family thought "of fuck maybe we were wrong".
How did that make you feel when they finally reacted that way? Did you already disregard their view of your art at that point?

No, but my art supports their bills and mortgage.

Interesting, I just see mine as a means to an end so I never seriously humored that line of though, even though it’s exactly what they ascribe to. At any rate, no one outside of randos on the internet even know I draw, though I’m planning on making my blog soon.

yes, although i think if i told them i wanted to go to art school rather than welding school they probably wouldn't have fronted the money for it. honestly, i think anyone who would pay for their kid to go to art school under the expectation that it's going to give them any kind of financial security, is insane, unless they're just rich and they have infinite money and the kid is a trust fund kid, but for working class families, yeah it's fucking insane. unless the kid has some sort of undeniable god-like skill already. i'm talking about a regular joe shmoe who just has an interest in art and thinks they want to be a professional artist, but are starting at whatever the average square one is for artist starting out pre-education.

I keep it a secret from everyone except 1 good friend. I'll probably casually tell them when I get good or confident with my work

Mother is. Shes actually a extremely good artist. I love how she does colors. Tragically my little brother was hospitalized with a heart birth defect when she made a painting when he was 6 months old. She thinks she was so focused on the painting, that she missed early signs he needed care. Ever since shes never picked up a brush again. I use her as a free editor and ask for her input with my art. She has a great artistic eye and gives great critique.

SO is barely supportive. They refuse to see it as a career and get mad when i grind my art instead of do house work more hours than the time I draw. I think the issue is I'm home all day so they expect that time to be for chores unlike if I were at a physically different location doing a job. Also baffles me if we both look ar phones while sitting next to each other that's bonding but doing art next to them means I'm wasting time or ignoring them. Wtf. Ive been keeping the peace by grinding for 4-6 hours a day then speed cleaning right before they get off work. Might be lying, but I don't give a flying fuck since my art i want to share that is the only thing keeping away my depression is too important.

Just keep leeching off him queen, while he is working hard at his job you just sit at home and draw then leave him when you made it. If he was a real man he would hire you a maid so he deserves it anyway. If you don't make it it's fine just use him as a fallback.

Husband. I'm a female and popped out a baby to prove it. Problem is 4chan has the culture of asking for tit pics of vagina owners and I prefer to stay on topic and dance around saying what gender I have for sure. Probably borderline tranny of me, but I'm ok with people assuming I'm a man talking about their wife, or a gay man to avoid the femanon bashing.

>>5041764
Our relationship is pretty good besides work conflict. We love each other too much to ever seperate so I hope that never changes. Luckily I'm motivated by proving others wrong so they motivate me to improve. They also shocked me recently and said if I can get commissions they'll not protest if I quit my part time job to do art full time. We're just two stubborn brick walls that are sensitive so we clash but make up very easy.

My mom is a typical highly educated chink who’s disappointed because I fucking suck at maths so I earned a history degres instead of business studies like she wanted. She views art as a hobby and nothing mode although she does “support” in a materialistic way (Christmas gifts etc).

My dad (white european) well he’s 1000% supportive, even today. I remember when I was a teen my parents had a huge fight, dad wanted me to enroll in art school or animation school and mom wanted something more “academic” so she can flex. Fucking chinks.

>Is your family supportive of your art?
Of course, they want me to make money with it since the meme is that artist can get millions for some shit on canvas since we are sub-middle-class.
Supportive about the thing yes.
But in our family it's mostly "you do you" and whatever happens happens.

Gonna copy/paste my post in a similar thread

They literally can't understand the industry behind it, no eye for art (i.e movies, pictures, painting) and no appreciation for it.

They only like realism, because that's the only thing they can comprehend.
