People skills
Introverts can't be successful artists
Find a Chad or Stacy, even if it has to be someone that bullied you, and beg them to teach you how to be sociable and network
That is your only option, otherwise give up

You need to draw things people find appealing. For example, I can tell you right now that if A)You don't completely suck and B) draw a softcore lesbian Overwatch piece and immediately afterwards a commissions chart, you WILL get at least 1 commission.

there are many ways to go about it but the easiest way is
•either be actually good at art or have a quirky appealing artstyle (a pleasant colorpalette does wonders in making your art appealing to normies, don't just post sketches/lineart all the time)
•draw fanart of very popular franchises especially around the time they have big events coming up, like let's say There's a new pokemon game coming up and they reveal a new Eevee, Draw a billion drawings of it, bonus points of it's in a bikini
•just general trend hopping
other helpful tips would be to do milestones every 100 or so followers to encourage interaction like having an art share or saying you'll do a free request for one of the people who Retweeted your post after a certain deadline, People love those and it brings attention to your profile

commissions has nothing to do with your social skills, i can assure you that none of the replies about "social skills" got a commission ever. the only social skill you need is to be polite, saying hi, thanks, and shit like that.

now the important thing:

>skills
you need to have a certain ammount of knowledge in art to be able to get some bucks, commissioners are more worried of their characters being portrayed the way they want, and thats translate to good anatomy.

>fetishes
if you lack skill, you can always pander someone disgusting fetiches/kinks, is more easy to get money this way, but your soul drain faster.

>furries
aside from the meme that this is easy money, you need to be above the average artist, furries are more fussy than the average commissioner, even the smallest detail can trigger them into telling other people that you arent that good, this will slowly kill your "furry art carreer" so be carefull.

about pricing, start cheap, a range of 25-50 usd for a full pic is not bad. here is the trick i use to raise my prices. if you open commissions in social media or forums like /aco/.

if you get less than 5 commissions; low your price, is hard, but maybe your prices are too high for your actual skill.

if you get 6-11 commissions; your prices are good for your skill.

if you get 15+ commissions; the demand is too high, you need to raise your prices the next time you open comms.

now in general tips

>avoid mid-long term conversations with commissioners
these fuckers dont know when to shut up if you give them the chance, they will flood you with other people art of their ocs, or directly tell you lores about them longer than the lord of the rings story.

>payment upfront
do not let people fool you with promises, they pay or you dont start drawing, if they ask for rough sketchs to be sure both of you are on the same page, thats ok, but not over do that....

>one commission
dont let comms stack, do one, then when you done, move to the next one, if you let 10 people pay you, you will get stressed at some point.

>hard requests
if you think you cant handle something, dont do it, dont be scared of saying no. if you let them, commissioners will push you to do shit you dont like

>the faster, the better
a commission that passes the month to be finish, is a red flag in the eyes of commissioners, dont make them wait, if you deliver in 3-7 ways, they will consider commissioning you again and again.

>act like an artist
dont post your political views, do not comment in controversial shit, avoid being involved in drama and dont use your social media and followers as a diary, nobody cares about your life, they only want to see your art. remember that in these days, people is unable to separate the artist from the art, if you say that you hate black people, your art become a symbol of racism and hate speech.

>>5039448
it depends on what you are doing/want to do.
twitter, newgrounds, instagram are places where you need to build a fanbase first, it dosnt mean it cant be done, but is kinda hard.

in other hand, /aco/ commission thread, big artists discords with commission channels are right now the best thing to start, is easy to catch a few commissions.

ok anon, im gonna explain this to you a way you can understand.

lets say you are an apple merchant.
you take your apples and go to the market, there are a lot of apple merchants, all selling apples that are a bit or less better than yours, even the same.
everyone on the market price their apple around 50 cents, is a good price for an apple, in the average day, everyone sells around 50 apples, thats 25 dollars.
but you cant stand these peasants selling apples so cheap, so you decided to sell your apples at 1 dollar, despite the fact that your apples taste the same as others.
in the average day, you sell 4 apples, yes, your effort is rewarded. You selling apples twice the price of an average apple, but at the end of the day, it takes you a week to get the same ammount of money as other apple merchants.

Why? BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK WILL SOMEONE BUY AN APPLE AT 1 DOLLAR WHEN THEY CAN GET 2 AS GOOD FOR THE SAME PRICE.

no one cares about the effort or the time you put in your artwork, they only care for the final result, is your problem if take you so much to produce the same quality drawings, the same quality that floods the internet right now. there is nothing special in your art, nothing that make it stand over others.

Again; why will the average commissioner pay you the twice the ammount, when they can get the same a lot cheaper? because you tried really hard? lmao

You clearly have the skillset required to make something of worth, it's just that your subject matter isn't very appealing, doesn't have a big audience, and has been done to death by better artists, you're competing with a pack of wolves for a few scraps of meat.
it's fine to draw it just because you enioy drawing it, just don't expect it to bring you much money.

You are not very intelligent, because you are forgetting the most important part. These "apples" take several hours of your toil to grow; Each. Anon was saying if you charge double and sell half as many apples. You are making the same but working less. I'm not surprised that you forgot the most important part in your analogy, because you are a just larping as an artist. The idea that you have to spend actual time drawing is a forlorn concept to you, it's no surprise you forgot to work it into your analogy.

>> No.5039949

>>5039771
it dosnt work like that, i guess you didnt understand what i was trying to say.

first and again, it dosnt matter how much time you put into apples growing, taking care of them, at the end all it matters is the flavor.

in commissions, you are assuming that this specific anon will sell his art that worth 25 dollars at 50, just because he put so much effort on it?

artists of the same level will sell more just because they are more cheap, even if these artists only get 8 comms per month, they still doing 200. but an artist of the same level selling their comms at 50, will only do 50 or 100 at much.

remember that commissions arent wage per time, you pay for a piece of specific quality, it dosnt matter if you take 12 hours daily per 2 weeks working on it if the result isnt that good.

We quite have similar style, I get commissions for allbum covers, book covers and tattoo design from instagram. I don't make bank but it is growing. People will always tell you to do something more profitable and soulless but for me it's better to just get a day job for support then do art you love. By being good and marketing yourself.

Mostly marketing though. Many technically awful artists make bank.

You're more likely to make more money if you're good, though.

Here are some easy steps (at least if you're good enough):

Go to people you know and offer commission work (maybe portraiture or whatever). Give them a decent deal at the beginning. Once you give them the work, ask them to tell friends that you did some work for them and that you are taking commissions. However, after a few commissions, bump up your price, especially if you start getting a lot more work.

Start small, but ask for a fair amount; don't sell yourself short. Get the work, network, and then start asking for more when more commissions start coming in.

I get people coming up to me in the street saying "paint me. Paint my children." I say "yes, of course". I do not hear from them again. I don't know why this is happening to me, and not you.

>> No.5055348

Doesn't this happen to you? It's so common place. I say "yes, I paint oil paintings" and they say "oh you must paint me!" Like their leg is going to drop off or something. And then they just disappear.

it doesnt look bad but it doesnt surprise me you cant make money or sell with this type of art. if you want to sell your work, you need to have customers to sell to, and these drawings are at best niche.
