Can't be proven or disproven honestly. He uses reference and gets very accurate, but if you overlay his drawings on his refs you do see key differences. It's possible he's a Drew Struzan type, but it's like trying to prove if/how much Rockwell traced from his photos. There are enough differences between the drawing and the reference that he could be tracing with minor adjustments, or he could just be comparing angles very carefully. I tend to think the latter, since he stylizes a lot, has a good amount of solid imaginative work, and he's an animator rather than a cover illustrator. I kind of don't think it matters at his level though, comparing angles vs tracing is trivial time differential at that point.

I try to think of studying art fundamentals in terms of questions and answers. The questions pop up while drawing every day from reference or imagination.

For example:
Draw portrait from photograph -> My noses look ugly and distracting -> Question pops up: How do I draw noses in a pleasing manner without drawing too much attention to it?

Then I can search for the answer in books, videos or master studies. I can look at specific portrait or anatomy courses. Or I can look at my favorite artists and see how they approach noses and copy their faces. Then I go back to drawing from photo ref and try to incorporate what I understood from the master studies.
