Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Collect more art from your favourite artists and do master studies or copy their style into your original work in order to develop a stronger style and way of thinking about your artwork. Try and pirate their patreon/gumroads and watch courses from similar artists.

Draw art of very recent stream events. Like a big collab or just something funny or cute, as long as it's topical. Vtuber RTs it, you'll get 1k likes pretty easily. Do that a bunch until you get enough followers to draw people to your usual stuff that's not related to an event.

Was waiting for the other anon to post it but I guess he isn't done refining it so I'll repost it again.
For anons who want to easily find Japanese tutorials

絵の描き方 ( method for drawing pictures ) or 絵の塗り方 (method for painting pictures)

replace "絵" with the bottom shit below if you want specific shit, e.g 髪の描き方

for hair 髪

for head use 頭

arm, 腕

for extra detail for hands and fingers use 手 and 指

feet, 足

legs, 脚

nose 鼻

eyes 目

For extra specificty if you want males do [x] (x being either 男(male) or 女(female) ) の脚の描き方

e.g 男の体の描き方, 女の目の描き方

For backgrounds use 背景の描き方 for how to draft them out and 背景の塗り方 to learn how to colour them.

For general lineart tips, use 線画上手くなる方法 (methods to get good at line art). You can also insert 線画, 落書き or rkgk on twitter to find rough drafts of Japanese artists

I'd reckon that'll give you top tier artist tutorials to follow.

I also reccomend this dudes channel if your japanese is good.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxuipVSw8ajLZPgSyKmw6Ag

also this video he made is toptier and inspiring which also has english subs

Usually all I'm trying to do is focus on drawing the shapes right in the correct perspective. 99% of the time I won't even finish a body, because all I'm doing is focusing on improving my brain.

The other two drawings on the right are imagination, so I clearly have a long journey to go through till I'm happy, but I'm very confident this method will let me draw whatever I want.

>上手い絵の模写: 上手い人の絵の記号(絵のパターン)を手に入れる
>Copying good drawings: acquiring the symbols of skilled people's drawings (the patterns of the drawings)
>実物の線画化:実物を理解することで、上手い人の絵が理解できる
>Real life drawing: by understanding real life, we can understand skilled people's drawings
>創作活動全般: 落書きや作品制作
>General original creation: sketching, complete OC works etc

Quote from the foreword:
>こうして、学生時代は「自主制作アニメを作る」「上手い絵の模写」「実物の線画化」のトライアングルを繰り返すことで劇的に上達していき、絵を描き始めてからわずか3年でスタジオジブリの入社試験に合格することができました。
>In this way, I made extreme progress during my school years by repeating a triangle of doing my own original anime drawings, copies of good drawings, and life drawings, and only 3 years after picking up drawing I was able to pass Studio Ghibli's employment test.

He was 19 when he started drawing.

Pic related also shows drawings from before he started practising deliberate copying as well as his original anime drawings from ~2 years after that.

Here's a link to a blog post with where he raves about the efficacy of copying

Don't get too excited.
The test only measures your ability to copy, animate and stay on model.
Studios need animators who can produce cohesive and reliable work, not amazing masterpieces of art.
As long as you've got work ethic, interest in learning and self-evaluation skills you can get hired in any studio.

Just pointing out what seemed like samefagging. Some people have nothing better to do than sit in this general and bicker behind the veil of anonymity. To reiterate, copying well is a necessary step in learning to draw well. This skill should certainly be paired with other fundamentals like construction, should one hope to become an animator. I just don't get why copying and fundies have ended up on opposite sides of a false dichotomy, as if proficiency in one precludes proficiency in the other.

Either way, I totally agree with this. My issue is with ngmi western pig shitters coming into this thread to tell people they should be ~unique~ and not copy. This notion is so far removed from the culture that actually exists at Japanese animation studios where the high appeal expressions of today have been borne from decades of copying and tracing over the work of genius/veteran animators/illustrators

Not them, but I highly suggest picking up one of SAI2 (crack here: https://www.sendspace.com/file/ngp17i)) or CSP (crack here: https://1337x.to/torrent/4018192/Clip-Studio-Paint-EX-1-9-4-Materials-FileCR/)) depending on what you value more (the best natural blending, idiotproof interface - SAI, the best natural sketching/with a whole host of useful QOL features like ignoring linegaps when filling which is what you'll spend most of your life doing if you enjoy having a manga/anime style - CSP) and then getting super familiar with it and improving and then moving to Photoshop (search for m0nkrus, first result on google) for the best colour post processing.

Krita/medibang/firealpaca etc are huge /beg/traps in my opinion. They take time to learn you could have spent learning other much more useful software.

I would only use Krita if you're on linux and are not dualbooting Windows.

CSP is also made by the same people that make the software that almost every anime studio uses and it's very streamlined for export to that anime software (CELSYS RETAS) and is very streamlined for making mangos for example screentones, 3D etc. And plus, 3D stuff is very important as you'll find out since perspective is very timeconsuming. If you are going to be doing long animations I'd suggest torrenting the cracked CSP since it has no framelimits and if you are going to be doing just general non animated stuff I'd either torrent the cracked version if you're broke or buy the cheap PRO version (you can swap between them anyway)

If you look at Japanese illustration videos you'll realize that most artists do their their sketch very clean (as in 1 or 2 strokes per line) and with full canvas view (no zoom). They construct the form with very few lines, constructing the outline from multiple connected strokes.
Then, they ink the sketch zoomed-in (100% view) with multiple strokes and with a very thin brush (around Size 1 or 0.5).

I should mention that most artists also rotate the canvas for inking and draw with the shoulder.

Also do NOT be afraid of using Ctrl+Z. In fact, using Ctrl+Z actually helps you build muscle memory and confidence for the stroke.
Don't fall for the "you-must-be-perfect-from-the-beginning" bullshit most people like to post here.

Blending in trad is very easy, you just brush the paints together. Blending in digital is a huge disorganised clusterfuck so a lot of people resort to colour picking and using brushes with soft edges and some people might even use gradients or start out in grayscale. The other way those super smooth artfags blend is with a seperate tool for blending which just fucks up your workflow like the blend tool in CSP or people using the smudge tool in PS etc. On the other hand, one SAI brush can handle both blending and painting together which sounds stupidly basic but is actually insanely good/useful when it comes to nailing fine details.

CSPs brush engine is specially geared towards nailing the perfect lineart. SAI tends to only have one basic hard brush with some textures slapped on it. PS tends to be quite clunky for lineart. CSPs brush engine is very customisable so I can, for example, taper the ends of the brushes depending on strokes and it's very responsive to my tablet so I can have it coming out like a real pen. A lot of the cool lineart you see online will be made using SAI, if it's not super basic looking (like a hard round brush or a hard round with a bit of transparency or a simple pencil brush).

Protip: Most manga artists don't really care about values in color illustrations. In color manga, color is mainly utilitarian, so whenever they have to pick a shadow color they just pick a darker tone.
If you check any tankoubon volume you'll see that some pages are a grey mess (unlike the regular B&W manga pages), this is because those were color illustrations converted into monochrome manga for cheap printing.

Hello gmi anon? My methods of practice require you not get things correct, but that your brain improves from your practice.

After drawing those heads, I was thinking these heads looked kinda ayy lmao, I knew the arm looked a little long, wtf is this pose dude. But in the end it doesn't matter. You don't need to think about these things when you're good.

Leave /asg/... as well as /ic/. 4chan in general. I come here once in half a year, now, to see if anything has changed. It hasn’t. I’m grateful for discovering /ic/ as it has very harshly bursted my bubble and shattered my self esteem. Now, I’m overcoming severe issues sharing my art anywhere and being paranoid of not “practicing correctly” (which hasn’t been a case before /ic/), but I’ve improved more in a year than I used to in four years. My mindset has changed. A good way to put it, /ic/ has destroyed me but I’ve gotten back on my feet much stronger.

Throw away those Japanese anime book drawing PDFs. 99% of them you won’t need. If you want to achieve “a style to blend in with Asian artists” then choose a few Eastern artists to study. Download their galleries and keep on your drive. Learn from great Western artists but stylize what you’ve learned basing on Eastern art. And observe. Observe every single detail and think why it is like that. Look at differences between your artwork and artists you like. Aim for each of your drawing to be as good as your reference artist. Look for patterns. And then self criticize after every work you’ve done and see what separates it from your favorite artists. Try to fix it next time. I can’t stress this enough. It allowed me to make gigantic leaps from every drawing to another. Self-criticism is the key. And is as simple as picking 3-5 things which are the weakest in the given piece and focusing on them especially on your next project. Too stiff? Try your hardest to make the next pose much more dynamic. Hair shading doesn’t look good? Study it more intensely. Folds look weird? Study drapery with ModernDayJames. With self-criticism, you won’t stagnate and will make GIGANTIC leaps from one drawing to another the more harsh you are on yourself. People who stagnate stay in their comfort zone. Keep learning and observing.

>> No.5027586

>>5027579
And again, my personal huge advice, leave 4chan. You will learn much more on your own than with /ic/. There are some very experienced people here but it is very difficult to find a gem in a pile of shit. Most of time you lose more (time) than what you get out of this board. Since I’ve left, I’ve started to progress much faster, I’ve already had everything I needed to know after ~2 weeks of being on /ic/, I stood longer for no reason. Get to know the starter pack (the very best books and videos; Robertson, Bridgman, Vilppu, Gurney etc...) and get out of here and start drawing on your own. I can’t stress this enough. If anyone here legitimately and with all seriousness wants to improve and go professional, the first step is to leave this website. For hobbyists it’s fine, but if you’re serious then leave. The amount of knowledge you can get from here is NOT worth the time spent browsing and posting. And instead of copying someone else’s art 1:1 as a study... Personally... It has been much more beneficial to me to draw your own original art but use the same technique as your references. Download ENTIRE galleries from your favorite artists so you can actually notice the patterns by observation.

Okay thanks, yeah I heard about that, I tried using it in some places but I ended up blending it so it didn't end up hard in the end.
I'm using Clip studio paint, and I'm using the mapping pen. Should I use something else?

Which Loomis book is the best to get a quick grasp on the concept without going overly deep?
My obvious bet would be "Drawing the head and hands" but maybe that's going into detail that's not needed for anime?

Opinions on clean lines vs "painted" lines?
One example of clean lines for me would be >>5027809 while painted lines is >>5028115.
Basically the latter one looks like the lines are painted as an object themselves using many small strokes, while the former has lines that could very well be described by polynomials.

I only see people trying to clean up their linework, but I honestly prefer artists who don't draw with very clean lines since it looks less alive.

Wanting that artstyle is the exact reason people don't want to do loomis. Just because a jap uses it doesn't make it good for anime.
Though I am not saying it isn't good for anime, I'm just saying that your example is bad and you should at least be able to differentiate anime style from something else before saying anything about the topic.

Loomis didn't invent drawing heads or anime.
It's absurd to say that any construction of a head or drawing a head is tied to Andrew Loomis exclusively.
If somebody does something similar it doesn't meant that they copied loomis if anything they copied regular humans, stylized and found a way to streamline the process.
Most of loomis' proportions don't apply to anime to boot.
