IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

what you want to do is think about any car you draw in terms of wheel lengths and wheel heights, and draw a straight line for the ground so the wheels are all on the ground.

what i mean by wheel length and height is all the wheels are the same size so think of the wheel as a measuring unit. how many wheels tall is your vehicle? how many wheel lengths are between the wheels? how many wheel lengths is the whole vehicle? people on here will tell you to look up scott robertson. when they say that it means they dont have a clue how to draw vehicles and they are just repeating what others have said. he's good but he gets into so much technical detail. its overwhelming and unnecessary.

1. Use tone/colored paper for practicing this.
2. Make the outline thicker than the contour lines.
3. Use white pen for the highlight/edges.
Your practices look pretty good already. Your weak point is getting crestfallen to quickly. More practice and less whining.

Decided to try my hand at perspective after watching some videos of a dude wandering around Japan. Sketched it out first, but kept fucking up or realizing where I went wrong, that creates a cascade of errors later. Also tried to ink it. I just started "drawing from the right side of the brain" and I think it's motivating me more than anything else has. As a /beg/ myself i like to look at other /beg/ artwork on here and ask myself if I can find anything about it that can be logically explained as to why it's bad or "off", but so often that I end up concluding is that the artist just needs to stop skipping fundamentals and learn some theory because the thing that is wrong with their art is everything. You can tell someone an arm they drew is out of perspective to help, but the help they might actually need might be failing to conceptualize what creating correct art looks or feels like. I think people should recommend this book more often here as a prerequisite to Loomis or Vilppu because what they might need to know is how to view art as an artist before grinding boxes and ovals has any practical benefit. Just some pre-bed thoughts.

Anons, how do you force yourself to just draw something? How do you stop yourself from just starting over constantly?
I try to develop a fuck it attitude like others suggested when drawing but the constant thought that it's never good enough always overtakes any reasonable thought, and I need to start from scratch and I end up erasing it. I just want to draw something to it's completion. I don't want to waste days overthinking about what pose this character should be in anymore. I want to have fun while drawing again.

Thanks for the reply! When I first started sketching it I hadn’t paused the video so I started with some lines out of place, thinking, “I don’t need to erase this!” And that got me real confused when I started sketching out the bigger parts. But that just got even worse because when I went back with a pen, I started confusing lines, and I also didn’t ink in the big parts first, like you said to do, I just went from right side to left side, and along the way things continued to get more and more distorted, but I was so focused on the little fence lines and other things that the whole piece started warping even more. I think if I did another scene it would come out better now that I kinda know the order to tackle it in. Systems and process are important. The speed sign went through four drafts and still came out wrong. Haha! Today I’ve just been practicing pages of attempting to draw a straight line exercise. I just wanted a break from drawing women poorly, so I drew a city poorly instead. I will try my best to work on those things, thanks for taking the time, anon.

Keep trying and stay consistent anon. There's a lot of theory, but art is a skill. Practice what you're learning about perspective and form, if you stop your muscle memory will fade, especially in the beginning. You will have a hard time just doodling in your spare time compared to making it an event to draw at the computer, but besides learning the medium on a neurological level, the fundamentals are the same. Micro leve technique changes, as does it with any change in medium. You’ll figure it out, but nothing is really stopping you. I know you guys get people posting fucking circles here all the time, but I am going through Brett Eviston's Art and Science of drawing because I want to get back to the basics and while I completely understand the idea of a volumetric sphere having two lines that bisect it at a 90 degree angle and two ellipses that go along those lines and that the degree those ellipses are determines where the center line is on that sphere, I am having a hard time conveying that.

Firstly, I feel like my circles in the bottom right lean to one side? Like when you flip the canvas, they appear lopsided even though I am not trying to make them lopsided. They all lean to the right. Is this even a concern I should be having or does it really not even matter that much?
Secondly, for the ovals I can not for the life of me get one side of the ovals to appear darker than the other, I always fuck it up. Is this an important skill? Applying pressure at different points in the ellipse to make it appear darker/thicker?
Thirdly, because I can't get one side of them to appear darker than the other through applied pressure, the spheres in the top right don't look very good.

Do you guys think this is just because I am doing this digitally? Am I using the wrong brush? Should I break out the charcoal pencils and newsprint?

Again, I hate to bother you guys by posting a bunch of fucking circles that look the same as any other circles and asking for help, but hopefully you can help with these specific questions. Always appreciate it. Also, I resized the image, I didn't actually draw them this small.

Try to exaggerate your first gesture more. You lose expression every step after that. Don’t just come up with an idea for a pose and leave it at that, think how it applies to your composition Maybe try more extreme perspective, consider the placement of the viewer. Line of action still allows but that’s more of a balance thing than a tool to create an interesting pose. Your characters not wrong, but imagine that’s a photo in 3D space. How much more interesting could the same character be just by moving the camera around?

u got a hard round u could use? Also, I just went over ur thing for fun and tested some stuff out. What I find works really well for me tho when painting is using a thin pencil line when painting that has toned down opacity. It pops the colors/blending more from what I see based on other artists and my own stuff.

Ive also noticed that a lot of the time, artists use thinner lines for clothing folds to describe form in a simple yet effective manner.

Again tho, I am a beg shitter so dont take what I say too seriously, experiment with it tho and see if you like it or not

You can layer stuff with digital art but how do you do that with paper and pencil? or do you just eyeball it and break it down?

Just eye balling it, helps you train to see what is wrong with a figure drawing better imo.

I think there was a dude doing porn further up who I'd say isn't beg, though he never posted finished stuff I don't think? Was worse last thread (the one before maybe, I dunno, they blend together) though, where there was a fair few people who were just clearly well past beginner territory.

>>5025911
Yeah I agree, the people who are just not even pretending to be beginners are retarded but it's not a big deal. Dudes bullshitting about how long they've been drawing are worse, but it's still the schizos who need to be told to fuck off more than anything. People are a lot better at giving realistic goals here than other places, and focusing on the "just fucking do something instead of whining" side of shit which helps a lot.

Minor thing, but are you really taking into consideration the perspective of the ovals bisecting the sphere? Like a square plane, a circle distorts and follows certain rules when shifting perspectives. Circle distortion in perspective is, in my opinion, a lot fuckier to comprehend then basic planes so if you don't already understand it maybe consider looking into it. It could help you convey more convincing spheres.

Though dont worry about it if its not that big a deal to you. You'll probably want to understand circles/spheres in perspective sometime later on but it shouldn't be that big a deal right now if you don't care that much.
