Why are older american comics much better in regards to character design compared to modern ones?

>> No.5015376

They weren't ashamed to look like comic books

???
I don’t read capeshit, are those not the designs they still use?

People back then knew how to draw from imagination and use gesture and form to full advantage. Now they can only trace and typical comics look like this, lmao.

>> No.5015723

Because people used to buy comics, they are hiring talent they can afford, comic book industry barely surviving for many years now

could american comics have been saved if they divided the labor in a sane fashion instead of having a random ape ruin good pencils with bad ink and then a monkey bury the whole thing in god awful colors?

>> No.5015784

>>5015757
I think the lack of division in labor* is what makes manga so much more appealing. You've got one person handling the majority of the workload, so it's not telephone game art edition. I think this is also why the Xerox animation method was so popular after it was developed. No more worrying about the ink and paint guys fucking your frames up.

*I know there are assistants and stuff, but that's all they are at the end of the day.

I would say "effort", but the truth is that they put people who hate comic books to make comic books.
Turns out hiring deadbeat cynical woke millennials without any work ethic just because it's trendy isn't best idea.

The industry is dying so they cheap out on finding quality talent. The better artists usually get paired with a decent colorist.

modern comics, even modern X-men look just as good, if not better imo.
You just gotta find the right artists, some guys can really make the characters pop
