Since I haven't seen a thread like this, I decided to start my own. When you hear a certain name of an art program (i.e Paint Tool Sai, Photoshop, Krita CSP) what do you think of them? are certain programs better than others? Does an art program being expensive make it better than another, or can a free one be just as good?

>> No.5013759

Krita is unusable for me. Think it's a bug with my wacom hotkeys but i'm too lazy to fix.

I have CSP and PS. CSP definitely feels more optimized for drawing. But photoshop just feels better to me. Really can't explain why.

Realistic painting or realistic rendering?

The best realistic painting program is probably corel painter.

When I hear "Gimp" I think about how wild it is how respected that project is when it still doesn't have very basic vector shape tools. I get that it's a raster editor, but Photoshop has had basic vector tools forever.

Being expensive doesn't make a product better, and free products can be very good, but having a company with a bunch of money behind a piece of software does mean more paid development behind it.

Sais better than CSP for lineart simply since its not as bloated.

>SAI is the best for rei17 style blending

You can do rei17 blending with any program. In most of her art she uses the sai version of hard round brush. To make that brush in any program just pick a hard round brush and enable flow or density pen pressure and keep opacity disabled.

>>5013773
>But photoshop just feels better to me. Really can't explain why.

It's probably because it's runs smoother than CSP. PS handles higher res canvases and large brushes better. But CSP has better tools specifically for drawing. It's like CSP feels specifically built for the artist in mind

Pretty much all the 2D art programs are thankfully interchangeable so you can use all and any plus they'll basically all have the same interface and shortcuts and even the name of the blending modes and filters etc are the same as PS. So once you know one program they're alllll the same. But I do think it says a lot that the only time I open up GIMP is for the colour to alpha that PS doesn't have and that I very occasionally do lineart in MS Paint, SAI or CSP and bring that over to PS because PS does literally everything else.

Krita runs better than PS, at least for me. CSP runs like shit since its singlethreaded. Why would you use a bloated single threaded choppy software for lineart when you could use a completely fluid, responsive lightweight software like sai. Youd use CSP for better textured brushes but then the lag immediately starts because the entire fucking thing runs on a single core. In addition, every non sai software has this fucking annoying issue that the brush engine ignores selection boundaries, so blur/blending tools pick up colours from outside the selection.

>>built in 3d models with the best posing, downloadable poses, auto perspective grids, perspective locking

As someone who uses CSP to death, let me tell you, the perspective modification tools are not really good at all, very limited compared to DesignDoll, and CPS has this terrible thing that when you modify the model perspective, it always prioritizes the limbs like arms and hands and distorts the head with the spaguetti effect, which is NOT good if you wanna do ass cake shots unless the arms are not towards the camera.

If only CSP will give you more perspective options, like a Fake perspective tool/Focus Point/Click Perspective Center option so you can manipulate model distortion at your wish.

This is the only worthwhile feature that Design Doll has over CSP, but the models, well, they had in fairness, they have more manipulation/customization options for model proportions then CSP which focuses more on realistic body types (simplified of course), whereas on DDoll you can make more outlandish and cartonnier designs, but the problem is that the models works like early 3d/Silicon Graphics models in the 90s, made of nurbs and with cylindrical limbs, and worst of all, is when you try to bend the character to do a butt shot pose, the way it bends the torso, the stomach, and the crotch, is more bubblegum-ish then on CSP, and there's no clear definition when the crotch (vagina/taint) area is supposed to be, and when you move the leg joints, they seem to be, ''eaten, by the coxis area, like they get clipped, or swallowed.

Its hard to explain, but try pose some limb manipulation on DDoll, then on CSP, and you will now what i am talking about, and this is the reason i gave up on DDoll, and haven't touch it since, specially after learning a few tricks for CSP perspective tools, but honestly this aren't enough, Celsys needs to stop being Japanese Tone-deaf, and add more and better perspective tools (a fish eye mode also would be nice)

Checking out tablet input in qt right now. Everything seems like it's going fine.

Anyway when I hear the name of basically any art software I think unusable.
Photoshop may as well be mspaint for all the reliability of their tablet input. Something about windows ink dependency and there's literally no way to fix it.
GIMP isn't for drawing or editing.
Krita is just another piece of KDE crotch necrosis. Tablet pressure works fine though.
Corel Painter is a mole on photoshop's ass. They can't design funtional software either.
CSP is garbo for painting, brush editor isn't made for humans and the toolbox is completely trash.
SAI is the closest out of all of them to being a decent art program.

I'm getting fucking tired of software so I don't know if I'll even finish this.

Honestly Sai and CSP are fine for coloring nowadays especially if you're doing something stylized. Photoshop is definitely the best for painterly trad imitations though. I told you people again and again not to buy iOS unless you are going to pay for subscriptions forever until Apple kills your device with updates/your apps become unupdateable and unusable. PS and CSP both require subscriptions on iPad.

Enjoy Procreate, I guess, unless you're willing to use some crappy and laggy screen mirroring app (and supposedly android has some flawless ones whilst with apple you're stuck with ones with high latency or ones that you have to pay a subscription, again, to use). There was a thread posted recently where someone wanted to buy another tablet on top of their ipad so they could use it with their PC, because they found out that an ipad didn't cut it.

Clip Studio, PS and SAI all have stabilisers. Lazy Nezumi is a meme nowadays useful for perspective rulers only and guess what, CSP has by far the best rulers already built in. And on Photoshop, Perspective Tools V2 is much better than Lazy Nezumi because it literally lets you deperspectify stuff.

The Surface pro 1 and 2 actually also used EMR. They switched to n-trig for the Pro 3, and while the computing specs improve with each model, the pen has been worse since the Pro 2.

Yeah I meant to say speedpaints not tutorials, looking at how artists approach the problem will help you figure out what you want out of it. The basic principles of digital painting are roughly the same as traditional painting.
1. First decide on what you want in it.
2. Quick rough sketch of the shapes <- this is where gesture/pose can come in to help it look more realistic
3. Start loosely blocking in the colours with normal biggish brushes that have some blend <- this is where value studies can help
4. Refine the colours with watercolour brush and/or a smaller normal brush with some blend <- this is where master studies/copies can help and working from realism
Where SAI comes in strong is that you can have everything except your lineart layer on one layer and the colours will blend.
