IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

First time posting on /ic/. I've tried to get into drawing a few times over the past couple years but I eventually get bored and stop. I don't want to be great, just good enough to make a cute comic. But every art book I've read is just sort of garbage, yes even loomis. It's like there doesn't exist an art book that has actual exercises that engage the self-learner. It's just wall after wall of nonsensical philosophical text and then some over complicated diagrams.

Have most artists ever picked up a math or physics textbook before? Most fields, fuck, even music textbooks, involve lots of exercises and cut down on the bullshit author opinions, and are actually self-contained classes in and of themselves. I'm getting ready to just give up on books altogether and just make a big folder of pictures of people doing a million different poses that I will just practice drawing over and over for the next year or so until I can draw. What say you guys about this approach? What are your thoughts on my take on art books? Is there something I'm missing?

Reposting, plse help
How the hell do I make these better? Do I just "keep drawing" until I get it? What do I have to focus on? I dont want to draw hyper realistic, just semi or cartoonish, but I still want it look presentable and not like this. I feel like I understand the form, and I can think in 3D (Like when I look at the construction, it actually feels like a 3D image and isnt flat, which is entirely new to how I was drawing a few weeks ago), but the second I go to apply eyes and other facial features it just falls apart. Do I need just need to study the anatomy and structure of the eye (and i guess nose and mouth while im at it)? Is it just symbol drawing being really awful and getting to me? What video or book do i need to see to be enlighten?
Just when I though I was approaching mediocrity, some other issue comes to kick me in the balls. Please help

The purpose of it clearly went over your head, you probably didnt even try it. You get bored of art because you want instant, good results. You don't want to put in the hard work to get decent, you're looking for secrets that will help you improve without actually drawing.

learning basic rules of life and structure before you exaggerate them. It also helps with flexibility in fields because although you COULD be good at animating or drawing in one style, what if you were asked to change completely to another? You cant adapt to it quickly because you have only been drawing in one style and dont know the basic features and rules that apply to real life, therefore will have difficulty exaggerating the new style in correct manner.

You do not need to study to the point of photorealism or anything. Realism just means you need to be aware of the real life forms that are being simplified or exaggerated when you start doing your anime or cartoon stuff. The generic anime style in particular is literally just simplified realism for the entire body - you cannot draw good anime bodies without knowledge of realism. There is no reason why you cannot study realism in tandem with your stylized art as well; you're in control of your own life, there is no enforced curriculum. Realism also happens to be a great way to start building up your understanding of perspective and 3D forms, which a lot of people who jump right into the style trap tend to neglect.

Her hands look a bit large, especially her right. On that note, I'd also make her shoulders more narrow; those would eliminate all tranny problems. Her right calve also seems bent/angled a bit too much; for something like that, I like to draw the whole leg, and then just erase what isn't seen, so you know everything is properly connected.

She looks a bit stiff, but that's normal when you're still learning and trying to make everything ork, so you'll grow out of that. One tip I like to keep in mind is to not always just have the torso and hips drawn straight, but only angled different. I probably did a shit job at explaining that, but for example, if someone is leaning back, don't just tilt their torso back 45 degrees; make it BEND. So the back would curve back, and not just be a straight torso angled. Again, sorry if I didn't explain that right.

Drew my own eye with a mirror since anime eye talk last thread made me want to draw an actual one to try and get how they work.
It was extremely difficult because I decided to make it in colour and I was in weird lighting (yellowish lighting from lamp to the side, computer screen in front). Picking out colours from reality is so much harder than from photos. I was also using a tiny mirror that I had to hold with one hand while I drew with the other.
Not sure if drawing a single eye is really that helpful but ended up finishing it.

No I know the skull is an egg shape with a face plate on it. I just have a hard time translating it to paper for some reason. Im trying to draw the head in 3d, and I know I can do it with other body parts because I've done it before, but for some reason when it comes to the head and facial features I cant wrap my head around it (no pun intended). Focus on drawing the individual parts with the goal of capturing the form.

Look at each piece and think about how it is placed in space. How it's tilted. Make things look more blocky/boxish if you need to to really capture the 3d shape and form.

I honestly wasn't confident with how I tweaked her body curves, partly due to the gesture of her body which is quite stiff
so here's a reference by a better artist. Imagine the a big curved line running through their body, it matters a lot more than anatomy tweaks. I really recommend trying to look into gesture when starting a new drawing

What hes doing is perfectly fine and can be considered learning to walk. Gesture drawing is meant to be quick so it is timed. It is meant to be quick so you capture the flow of the body and don't get caught up in detail

I do figure drawings everyday for about an hour and all that, and even tried dabbling in anatomy but I still really suck at that. But for some reason when it comes to heads it just so damn difficult for me to understand what is going on.

Another /beg/s attempt at this. I could have fixed more things, but I was bored by it already.
Drawing smiling people when you can't draw faces good is setting yourself up for a failure - there's too many things that go into smile and even good artists sometimes fail to make it look convincing. You're still drawing eyes and nose without thinking about their construction. You're drawing a mouth as a symbol, without thinking about lips or the curvature of the mouth... And so on.
Start by drawing people with neutral face expression, with good lighting that shows face structure and preferably with males as their face structure is more defined and easier to study. There's a reason Loomis starts with them.

I drew her earlier actually, though I didn't like how it came out and kinda gave up.
Hard to keep her from turning into some kind of horse-creature and get her likeness with that expression. Smiles are hard. Would maybe have been easier if I had rendered it but I was determined to find a way to simplify her features with lines that worked.
Also made the mistake of using no guidelines underneath so I was erasing and redrawing features constantly.

No, I just know how to copy photos by eye.
Take a look at what you want to copy really closely, look at the angles, negative space, see what features line up, then draw it yourself. Always refer back to the original, don't just draw what you assume is there. When you think you're done compare your drawing with the original, see what's off in your own and edit it until it matches.
You get good at it with practice, I drew a lot of still life stuff and portraits for school as a teenager and you kind of instinctively get the tricks as you keep going I think.
It has very little to do with drawing from imagination which is a totally different skill you have to learn seperately (and which I never did.)
