Play around with colour balance. Adjust until you feel satisfied.
Adding filter also works out. You might be surprised how filter can really help pop out an art.

>Inb4 hurr durr filter is cheating
As long as it's not the final product, filter is a fair game. Lots of artists do this all the time.

>Basically she's supposed to look off balance, like she's getting pulled along with the other dancer, like she's out of her element but enjoying it none the less.
alright, my initial gutfeeling is that the figure itself is too stable too look off balance. I would move the center of mass around, and if she is truly getting pulled along a gesture that follow the direction of the pull could also help.

>> No.5014642

>>5014571
Oh yeah I understand that much. I should have deleted the skeleton before posting... my process for getting down complex poses is convoluted and not worth getting into... The point is the skeleton is just an artifact of trying to visualize the person in the space, not so much the final pose she'll be in.

I've drawn her a hundred times and she always looks either too balanced or too off balance in such a way that doesn't convey the right kind of movement. She can't be too off balance because it would look like she's falling over, but she can't be too stiff other wise it doesn't look like a dance at all

I imagine the lead dancer is simultaneously throwing her left arm out away from the camera (dragging the other woman in that direction) while springing toward the camera.

>>5013991
My best piece of advice is to get a sketchbook and just do thousands of small, thumbnail-like, drawings of human figures. Don't get into details, use simple shapes for hands and feet and rough (but accurate) shapes for heads and such.

If something looks wrong with one of your drawings, look at a photo of a person to correct it. Likely at first, everything will look wrong. That's fine just keep doing it.

Rendering on her face highlights too many angles and makes her look unfeminine.
The "fuzzy" sort of textured rendering in general is kind of unflattering and unsexy.
Pose is boxy and not very dynamic. Looks almost like you traced a real woman instead of drafting up an idealized woman. If you used a ref then don't be afraid to push the pose a little bit.

I will give you a critique on this piece because I have seen you post it twice now. Your shading lacks contrast I might recommend a better reference image next time. You'r lips are larger than they need to be you made the upper lip much too large at the end. Your nouse is does not follow the same shape as the reference. You changed the eyes and the chin lakes the subtlety of the orgiginal image. Other than that you show that you understood the subject and I would give it a solid 80% in forms covered but you need to train your eye more. But whatever I am still slowly going through barge drawings with 75% accuracy on line placement so take it how you will.

Your values are a bit ... flat. As such it makes your portrait look flat. You need to play around with a larger range of value and know where to put your darks, highlights, and midtones. This will automatically make your portrait pop out more and look more realistic.

The layout is super fresh, it has a lot of potential. You need to think more about shadow/weight. #1, ditch this brush, it looks 100% like a digital painter's sketch. Try a textured line, maybe a thin pencil or fountain pen. Watch how line artists like Linnea Sterte, Moebius, Katsuya Terada etc. approach mark-making. See how they add extra marks, shapes and details to accentuate forms or textures, how they black in certain shadows (even with single-width lines) and how they establish hierarchy in their pages.

The full-body of the guy should pop out hard, and the speech bubbles should be thicker than the general line. Close gaps and don't leave things unweighted-- the things dangling off of his boot shouldn't be transparent; they're heavy dangling objects. It seems like your subject matter is gritty, so don't be afraid of texture/heavy shadows/etc.

I always advocate for direct painting, meaning you should try and accurately place color and shape from the start. I'm not sure what your reference looks like but your painting is muddy and lacks structure. I think this is the result of uncertainty and just kind of pushing paint around hoping it looks right.
In the future, I would spend more time on making an accurate drawing on the first layer, as if the underlying structure is flawed, nothing on top of it is going to fix it.
Work from dark to light, from general shapes to more specific ones.
Painting and drawing is as simple as making accurate observations and recording them. It's simple, but that doesn't mean it isn't challenging.
I've attached an image of how Felicia Forte generally works, but I'd also suggest looking at Uglow.

Your measurements are way off, measuring accurately is important in getting a likeness. Your line quality is also very poor, you need to get more confident in placing your lines. There are a bunch of different ways to measure. In portraiture, especially from life, using a grid or ruler isn’t feasible. Most portrait artists use sight sizing or pick a reference measurement such as the width of an eye. Plumb lines help you measure out the angles of features and shadow/light shapes.

I recommend looking at other watercolor artist's techniques. There are a lot of simple tricks you can do with watercolor that you can learn from them, that will be much more annoying to discover on your own. No need to reinvent the wheel.

I've largely abandoned pure watercolor for gouache, though, so maybe I'm not the best person to be handing out this advice.

Anyway here's what I'm working on. I literally don't have a clue when I'll get a chance to finish it. I'm working 11 hours a day until mid-December.

I see. Well, I guess you could get away with an S&M inspired outfit for your character; God knows Hideo Kojima's been getting away with it for 30 years.

But the breasts poking through the holes in the straitjacket is just a bridge too far. That's literally fetish-gear at that point. Maybe make it a bit more clinical, or as an alternative, brutal and grimy looking.

It's very nicely drawn though.

The entire face and head looks bad, and not like the commissioners design is bad, but more like you can't integrate people's designs into your style kind of bad.
I can never tell with your work whether you make some design decisions on purpose or just out of your lack of internal doubt whether something looks good... you just continue on with it until its "finished" without ever going back to square one to see whether you can make it look better
