Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I just tried drawing Aang from Avatar and it looks like crap. Even following this tutorial https://easydrawingtutorials.com/index.php/anime/262-draw-aang-avatar

So where do I begin being able to copy anime/cartoons well and learn how to construct them?
I know there is a pastebin, but there are so many resources there, which one do i pick?

Repost from a previous for anons who want to easily find Japanese tutorials

絵の描き方 ( method for drawing pictures ) or 絵の塗り方 (method for painting pictures)

replace "絵" with the bottom shit below if you want specific shit, e.g 髪の描き方

for hair 髪

for head use 頭

for extra detail for hands and fingers use 手 and 指

feet, 足

legs, 脚

nose 鼻

eyes 目

For extra specificty if you want males do [x] (x being either 男(male) or 女(female) ) の脚の描き方

e.g 男の体の描き方, 女の目の描き方

For backgrounds use 背景の描き方 for how to draft them out and 背景の塗り方 to learn how to colour them.

For general lineart tips, use 線画上手くなる方法 (methods to get good at line art). You can also insert 線画, 落書き or rkgk on twitter to find rough drafts of Japanese artists

I'd reckon that'll give you top tier artist tutorials to follow.

I also reccomend this dudes channel if your japanese is good.

also this video he made is toptier and inspiring which also has english subs

For the love of god, don't do that. Do what the picture says and use techniques like block-ins, comparative measuring, angle measuring, and plumb lines (see Dorian Iten's Accuracy guide) to copy simple line drawings accurately. Once your eye and hand are better move on to drawing things in real life and from photographs. At that point you can tackle more advanced topics like perspective, anatomy, construction, etc. It wouldn't hurt to do Drawabox on the side but your main focus should be OBSERVATIONAL drawing.

I'm still learning anatomy can somebody help me out analyzing this.

It the neck meant to be this low?
I feel like the artist made it too low and doesn't feel like it's connected to the cervical part of the spine where it would exit the ribcage.
It also doesn't look centered. Is it just me?
I also feel like with the head at this angle the neck would barely be visible.

Also is her forearm too thick or is it me? Like it feels like they just added fat and made her extensor muscles too big.
Does the arm to that in real life?
Also don't the biceps brachii shrink and triceps brachii get bigger when the arm is extended? I feel like biceps brachii is too big and the triceps brachii isn't big enough.

As an artist, they're not amazing, but they record every inch of their workflow and answer questions when streaming which is incredibly helpful. Their tools are as follows:
Clip Studio EX for the frames
CELSYS Retas (the program that animu studios use) specifically paintman for auto colouring from the binary outlines of CSP.
Photoshop for backgrounds. They also know Blender and a small amount of Maya for the 3D required for backgrounds so for example apartment building blocks are modelled in Maya and are painted over to produce your anime apartment block background.
Adobe Aftereffects to put the whole background and anime together (video compositing)

Idk, I don't really know perspective I just fuck along until I get something. I think drawing loads from life helps give you a sense of what looks right and what looks wrong over time.

The two main things I noticed was that your breasts weren't aligning with the vp because if you notice in the top left image I drew some lines from the left vp but the line of the area underneath your breasts isn't following the vp point line. Additionally, your leg pointing away from us is flat in one direction so you want to add curves to make it look more natural. I usually refer to Krenz's anatomy sketches for where to add things.

You're also treating the shorts as too flat. They have a degree of space between them and the body, you can give them a bit of volume to make them look a bit more realistic. I've been doing cloth simulation in marvelous designer recently and have noticed this behaviour when trying to make shorts....

For more complicated poses I find that 3D models are the best way to approach things. If you have CSP, plopping in human models will give you a perspective grid which is useful.

I didn't really want to redline because I'm still firmly /beg/ myself, but I don't really agree with the other guys redline. It's very clearly a high angle shot of her, and he shouldn't of tried to find the horizon by using the feet because the legs weren't in perspective with the body. I think the biggest mistake was forgetting it should be in 3p perspective because you're looking down on her. I could be wrong though, I haven't been drawing for all too long so I'd be happy if a more skilled artist could weigh in.

>> No.5011961

I actually agree with the other guy more.

Instead of the whole figure, think about how the original artist drew the burger on the plate. That gives the most clear indication of what the original artists intent was with the pose.

I don't really think we should judge the perspective from the burger as opposed to her actual entire body... The original pose has the arm foreshortened and the hand similar in height from the ground to the shoulder, while their redline has it at around the waist. The plate is also tilted towards her in the original, whereas it's either tilted slightly out from her or is level in their redline.

I mean, perspective is most definitely isn't my strong suit and it's definitely been more than 3 years since I watched or read any sort of perspective course. And just because you're /beg/, it doesn't mean that you don't have something useful to add.

The reason why the top of my cube isn't going down is because her head doesn't seem to be going down although the rest of the body is and I thought it wasn't 3 point perspective because it doesn't seem to me like her head or feet are narrower or wider suggesting that the encompassing volume doesn't have a VP down below or above.

Just look at any regular artists that isn’t Scott and you’ll see why. The method is accurate sure but time consuming as shit unless you’re doing mechanical stuff but even that could be simplified.

The problem with using 3D models is twofold.
It's easy and quick to get, say, a human in the scene because almost every poser like the CSP one will have people

However there are also no backgrounds, etc, in them. So you either have to stay with the only stuff that's available OR you learn how to model the background also. It can be quite challenging. For example, I was greatly struggling with how to facet a jewel and sometimes you might not even have a tutorial on the internet for modelling whereas if I want to DRAW a jewel I can simply google it. Furthermore, 3D renderers won't generate a grid for you and CSP will crash if the polycount is too high for it to handle and the number of polys it can handle sucks. At some point in time, you will HAVE to combine your 3D and your 2D.

And this is where it gets tricky! Because you have to know perspective in order to match it.

Why are you talking like that I don't know jack shit about perspective?
most of what Scott talks about is quite basic and only daunting to anyone who haven't wasted drawing freehanded boxes or setting up either a 1p,2p, or 3p grid and then trying to draw boxes or any shapes you can think of.
3d is normally use for backgrounds, ect sketchup, blender, maya, you get the point.
pic related is a hentai game I use to practice 3d forms and would basically draw it over and over again till something clicks that I can easily draw a pose with minimal construction.

The CSP pose thing might suck dick but you can import any low poly backgrounds into it. If I, say wanted to model a pair of low poly wings and import it in and a halo and cat ears and a low poly room, I probably could do it. Whereas, an H game is quite limited. In fact I'm moving my whole workflow into 3D at the moment so I can setup custom lighting on top of modelling the bits for anything I'm making.

>> No.5014531

>>5014522
I think you're overcomplicating shit a bit too much, if I want to do backgrounds i'll just go wit the sketchup route or download sims 3,
for things like "wings" "cat ears" or a halo on top of the characters head, you're just better off actually drawing that than say booting up blender making your own or using that plugin off github and directly download shit off sketchfab for free.
ultimately you're just better off collecting references of environments you want to draw off google and know how to actually draw backgrounds. the biggest advantage with 3d is that you can have a fully rendered scene and you can easily move the camera around so you can have multiple shots with only using one background to give more information of the environment you want to portray and tell.
but you do you.
oh yeah that hentai game can easily get .obj imported if you're using blender to make props.

I feel like this is my first big step towards being a pixiv anime artist like those who do character portraits for F/GO.
I mean I've drawn a lot of characters but this one feels like the kind of shit I imagine is on pixiv. You know, a horny anime girl with fire powers. Yeah I can totally see this being a 3* on FGO... I fucking love me.

I think main issues are a) her irises are in bad perspective and b) her brain case is too small. Also in your version her farther eye is too big compared to the closer one. Look how deeply the farther eye is set below the brow in the original and how yours pops out like on a fish. Sorry for the rude analogy

If you're seriously wondering why your version is bad, try tracing over both your version and the original with G pen, each on it own separate layer. Then stack the layers on top of each other and have a long think about what happened with your version. Yes it's tedious and you don't need to do it every time but you will learn serious facts every time. I disagree about gesture and composition (these are very good but not relevant here imo), if you like that artist you should vary between tracing and copying them by eye for a few months and always think about the effects of foreshortening and perspective

Any critique? I tried rotating the parts of the body so they're more accurate in relation to the perspective.
I had some trouble with the head. I can rotate a normal human skull but an anime head is a bit tricky, mianly because of the chin and cheeks. I'm not sure if I show the curvature of the jaw for anime styles, or I skip adding details to make it more stylised, I haven't really seen anime characters with their head tilted back like this especially lolis who lack more detail features. I think artists like Ishikei just move the mouth and nose up and keeps the chin pointy so he avoids having to show that, here's an example https://nhentai.net/g/51775/5/.. I guess it's like not showing mickeymouse from the front. The cheek are also chubby, I don't really know how they would work with the jaw but I still tried. I ended up shading the part under the jaw because it looked weird without it

i don't know if you have a huge ego or you are just an idiot and i mean it, have you ever saw any high quality anatomy drawing? i don't mean some atlas shit but a drawing were you can see the anatomy being conveyed correctly(pic), your anatomy is beg level not because is not polished but because most of it is anatomically incorrect not even cherrypicking about some minor detail being off but large parts being incorrect like the feet in the right, chin, forearm, knees and theres more.

you are just like any other beg that thinks knowing 8 heads=body is enough( this is hypervole).

that's why you keep being told go study your fundies but i mostly sure you only spend 30min in one part and once you can replicate the the image you move on rather than understanding and being able to reacreate the image/subject.

I basically just study proportions, memorise muscles and bones and try drawing them from different angles, if the book I'm reading mentions notes I write them down too.
This is what my study of the hands and feet look like. I draw them out, try to memorise the muscles and bones and label them then draw them from different angles. If you have better idea for learning anatomy I'd love to hear it

When I think learning anatomy, I think getting someones basic figure like yoshinari-san's figure, and learning where they place all their bumps and how the relates in 3d forms/shapes I can use in another drawing.

I honestly don't know how to study anatomy but I really did try to memorise everything that I could from that book. I spent ages drawing them over and over, and trying to recall names of bones and muscles.
Things like where fat builds up, the different bones and their names, names of muscles, and other things of note even making up mnemonics to go with them. Most of this was useless as girls don't show these muscles that often, still I wanted to get anatomy right since people kept saying that I got it wrong.
Don't get me wrong I wouldn't say I have a perfect 100% memory of it but I really did study it and could recall them with near perfect success even now.
The only thing I could improve on is drawing the body parts from even more different angles, different positions or by going into medical books. I don't know what else to do to improve my anatomy knowledge from /beg/ status I've tried literally everything.
I actually would put more details one my drawings but I was told that it looks weird seeing anime girls have detail unless they're muscular for muscles or bony for the bone details.

That said I have a terrible eye for finding out what's wrong with my drawing. Thanks for tell me what's wrong, I genuinely saw nothing wrong with it. I don't know why I have this problem. if I were to draw the body part on it's own I could do it fine.

Also if you tell me how to actually learn anatomy, the proper way that would help a lot.

People told me to learn anatomy, so I tried to do whatever I could and even now I still don't know how to study it. So I just learnt everything that I could about the body. I wish I knew how.

Thank you, I tried to fix the shoulder and top, hopefully it's a little better.

Did you actually try to look at real references or your favorite artists art and see how you could apply those anatomical knowledge?
Or did you just memorize the name and shape of muscles, and stick it onto a basic mannequin all call it done?

Yeah I used to just put all the muscles and landmarks that I could, until people told me to stop since my characters looked too muscular, then I just stopped and put the main ones like the fat pads on the upper legs, correct bumps of the extensor and flexor muscles on the forearms, bump of the tricep brachii, the ulna showing on the forearm, etc.
I toned it way, way down.
My main problem now is that I miss things I guess, like proportions and how certain parts look at different angles.

Oh sorry I didn't word my questions clear enough, kinda sleepy haha
What I meant is did you do studies from references? Because your study image looks like you draw it from imagination, rather than trying to analyze and deconstructing from references

I do the following
I first do the gesture and try to incorporate contrapposto with a stick like figure while still trying to avoid making it stiff and making sure it has the proper proportions.
When that's done I add the anatomy while paying to the rotation of limbs and the bumps.
That's pretty much how I draw now. I used to draw out the skeleton but most of the time I'm putting clothes on it so I skip it and add bones at certain landmarks when it's needed. I sometimes do boxes but it doesn't help that much.

I basically do >>5017966 for every drawing I do.

I don't really do studies really I'm not really sure how to, I just do figure drawing and learn from that, if that counts.

I'm not the original poster for that, I just copy paste. I choose Yusuke Murata.
