How do I do soft/diffuse lighting without a gradient tool or something similar?

I'm terrible at this, but I think trying to define certain parts of the boar helps a lot. I tried to define belly and neck primarily to try to add depth to it, and the top of the back as lighter because counter-shading. Your colors just seemed kind of random.

Thanks, I didn't really pay much attention to the BG, was mostly focused on the figure, it's meant to be sky and clouds.

They're both game pixel artists so they deal less with individual characters and more on stuff like props and tilesets, but all of it is tranferrable. Looks good to me honestly. If you don't have riDDiculous proportions it's pretty hard. Your highlighting does the job well I think. If animated a minor bounce and the fact that they'd be consistently highlighted would probably help emphasize them more, but for a still it's harder in my experience.
Also is the yellow pixel behind the left knee purposeful? Looks weird.

Not exactly a pixel art question, sorry. Does anyone know gamedev api/platform/engine that is somewhat similar to flash in animation functional? I wanted to move from it for a long time, but I can't find anything that quite as easy and powerful for 2D animation (maybe aside from unity, but it seems like massive overkill for a shitty pixel h-game). Your piece doesn't gain anything from using these constraints.

In my humble opinion pixel art should be about placing individual pixels and where placement matters.

Painting with pencil brush and using bucket tool to fill 99% of your piece. What's the point?

My palette is literally that, a palette. I work on Photoshop, just make a layer with a selection of color to use, like a painter.
I usually draw quiclky, and I draw for a long time, but there's a few catch. First, since it's for a game I'm working on, I already have a list of the character.
The real secret technique is to start with a silhouette and work the elements and detail like silhouettes, because pixelart is all about read-ability of each element

It's really 6 huge parts : legs, the crab, the tank base and each canons. And maybe the huge claw. Each of these parts is very detailed, but very different from the other,so the whole is distinguisable.
I also paint miniature, i guess that helps about making tiny thing like where does the eyes feels right and the color choices of course.

I've started a new faction that takes a bit more time, mostly because I have less info to work from. They are a whole group of faggy demons inspired by that one demon from RPG Maker XP

Haven't played YGO for years so trying to recall what they're supposed to look like it a little tough, but for general stuff ai personally like outlines and grater rather than black shadows. More shadows for the winged characters too.
Specifically I think the maiden's praying hands look more like a waist cutout or something, it's just unclear. Also the stone guardian looks nothing like him do I hope that's a different card. Weapons could go a long way too characters lik celtic guardian.
This is all from memory though, so take it with a grain of salt.

I'd say there's several inconsistencies regarding the proportions. You attempted imitating the official artwork, but we can see that it didn't really work, the front left leg is way longer than the right one, the back right leg is really weirdly positioned and the mouth is kinda fucked perspective-wise. Honestly I'd suggest you sketch the thing and then sprite over it, I've done that with my "demake" sprites and the results have been quite presentable, picrel. All it requires is that you get a feeling for the design and how it works so you can accurately sketch it.
Of course RBY sprites are notorious for looking horrible, so maybe you don't even have to fix it if you're going for stylistic cohesiveness.

Well, it's lightweight, open-source, has nice editor (that also includes 3D mode) and it's own scripting language. Also Godot has detailed onboard documentation. It took me just few minutes to throw together a scene with animated actor, collision detection and response, movable camera with easily settable limits. For comparison, I spent weeks to figure out how to do same shit in action script 3, but that might be because I had zero experience with programming back then (even now I suck ass at it, but little less than before)
What I didn't like so far is working with animations and sprite sheets. AnimationPlayer has very bare-bones visualization of your anim frames and setting timing is just huge pain in the ass. On the plus side you can key literally any property of any given node (default game objects for Godot) on scene, which can have variety of non-animation related uses (like turning AnimationPlayer into neat state machine). As for the sprite sheets, editor can't automatically slice them into frames properly, so you have to manually space your frames inside sprite sheet image itself.
Overall, I think it's good alternative for Unity if you plan to make 2D pixel stuff.

how come modern pixel art looks so different compared to stuff from the 80s and 90s? even if you start from the snes onwards which eliminates most color limit issues you can still instantly tell even if the modern pixel art is well made. been trying to figure that out for a while. there's something about how people placed the pixels back then that has a very specific aesthetic I don't know.

Old graphics limitations, like the mentioned palettes, and sprite size limitations. Artist had to be extremely deliberate in the way things were drawn. You could almost say that old pixel art looked good because of the specific limitations that they had to work with. A lot of modern pixel art is rather traditional, but aided by the freedom of better software and graphics capabilities.
