i don't know how to explain what i mean by a finished piece. but when i look at this, it doesn't look thought out is my point. adding a hand doesn't improve anything, just like how adding tide pod thingies doesn't. no matter how much stuff you add, it's not going to 'work'-- on a baselevel it's not going to follow through because everything is so stale fundamentally.

in fact, i think you benefit from not going too crazy with the ideas. imo this particular drawing would look a lot better without the cuts & the tide pods; they distract from something which is very basic and direct.
all this stuff would work a lot better with a more dynamic base, and also one not so close up. not a bust.

The only thing I like about this piece is that the guys face perfectly encapsulates my face when I was drawing this.
Holy shit this is so fucking awful. I dont even know why I tried to add values, I havent even studied ANY rendering/lighting. I only have studied the 4 primary fundies because even though I understand them I still suck at them and im too scared to move on. Maybe I thought if I added shadow it would look better, but does that even matter if the lines are garbage?
I hate symbol drawing so much. I dont care if im drawing cartoons or whatever, but when I try to draw even just a semi realistic person it hurts. I still cant get hands right even with a reference. I cant even tell if I did the perspective and construction right.
Looking back yeah I could fix his hairline to be actual in the right place, or his hands, or maybe make the shadows actually neat and not blobs, but whats the point? Its overall shit. Time to back to the cycle of studying, drawing something, and having it be shit, but maybe slightly less shit.
It hurts. I dont want to give up but it really fucking hurts.

Hundreds of figures, and specifically attack the parts of the figure that are difficult for you instead of hiding them under clothes

Take (and finish) courses/books and don't expect to get things easily on the first try.

It'll take you maybe a thousand or so hours of just drawing figures to get reasonably comfortable with them to a point where you can understand the material in a figure drawing course or book. And that's a thousand hours of stylus-to-tablet study, not distracted time

So be thankful you're in a position where you can draw for 10 hours a day. Use your time to the fullest and keep grinding until you get there

Figure drawing for all it's worth, and copy every single illustration in the book, shading and all, multiple times. Doing that helped me a ton

I also liked hampton figure drawing for the way it simplified the torso anatomy but thinking about specific muscles will come way later

But at this point for you, seriously prioritize figure drawing. Nothing in any course or book will click unless you're doing figure drawing like
a maniac. Do like 5 hours of it a day for months if you have the time, and ask for critique as often as you can

Tried making something cute

For this one I drew from reference (duh) but the thing I tried this time was to be confident in my inking lines using the sketch underneath as a guide, then filling in with the pen for spots that I had fucked up or hadn't done right and just rolling with it to make it complete.

Uhh, I went to law school and was the weird lefty smart dude that chain smoked cigarettes and made friends with everyone. The more I studied the more I hated the inherent nature of the study and practice of law in the U.S. I couldn't stop applying material analysis to every case or black letter law I read. Studying for the bar exam was the absolute worst because it was nothing but smiling corporate faces just explaining things to you as if I was a child. A bunch of family stuff happened, causing a bunch of stress too. Money got tight because I don't come from wealth. So basically I'm over educated, in debt, waiting for bar exam results again and no one will hire me while I'm waiting for results. I don't want to do it a third time. I just can't. I'd rather do something meaningful. So much of our workforce is made up bullshit jobs that are all just piled on top of each other. We strive to make art so that the gap of meaning can be filled with the production of something we can call our own. God I just wish Great Entity from Beyond would just eat me already.

Learn to enjoy the process of drawing from imagination. The trial and error of it. Sketch lightly and slowly build it up. You'll make a lot of shitty drawings. But eventually one of those shitty drawings will contain an aspect that isn't that shitty. It may be a grotesque imagining of a human face but wait, the way you drew the eyes makes you kinda proud. Or maybe it's the nose, or mouth. You'll feel bad because the drawing is shit, but that one part that you did right will make you feel good.
